Could it of possibly been bitten at one time and it is a scar or does he scratch alot. If he scratches alot he may need his nails trimmed. If he scratches are his ears dirty or any sign of bugs? If it is not dirty and no signs of bugs then I would suspect that he may have scratched and with his nails being to long cut himself.

I wouldn't worry about taking him to a vet unless you would feel better doing so.
