If your son is going to show his rabbit, I would suggest that he join the local 4-H rabbit project where he will meet other kids who are learning about rabbits and showing also.

In my opinion both Mini Rex and Mini Lops are great breeds for a beginner in rabbits. The rabbit should not be altered if you are going to show it. For a show-quality rabbit, you will want to find a good reputable breeder in your area where you can buy a purebred, pedigreed rabbit for show. You could check out a local show and talk to breeders before making a decision. You can find out there who is raising the breeds you are interested in and ask questions. Find a show at www.arba.net Show Listings page. Here are a couple of breeder search links that you can try also:

Make sure you are specific with the breeder about wanting to buy a good show-quality rabbit. If you find a rabbit you like, examine it for any potential problems--see http://www.manderabbitry.com/articles/examination.asp for how to examine you rabbit and what to look for in a healthy rabbit. We have more info on general rabbit care, mini rex breed profile, and links to other useful sites on our website linked below. Good luck!
