So celebrated was the Pharos that it has pervaded the
languages of the world. Variations of the word Pharos
have taken on the meaning lighthouse in many languages.
Moreover, the word used for an automobile headlight in
Paris and Martinique and Tahiti derives from it
("phare"), in Milan ("faro") and Barcelona and Santiago
de Chile (also "faro").
It is echoed in the name of a city of Portuguese coast
("Faro"), and it has lent his cachet to the word for
the "science of lighthouses" ("pharaology").
One surmise is that the word "Pharos" is a corruption
of "Pharaoh", which itself means "great house". If so,
the island certainly grew into it's name with the
construction of the towering edifice of Sostratos.
Just thought that might interest some of you...
