Genesis 19:37-38 And the firstborn bare a son, and called his name Moab: the same is the father of the Moabites unto this day. 38 And the younger, she also bare a son, and called his name Benammi: the same is the father of the children of Ammon unto this day.

Many is the person who has said to himself: "If I sin I hurt no one but myself". The story of Lot and his two daughters is tragic proof that sin has consequences beyond those initially involved in a specific sin. The first time the Moabites are mentioned in the Bible after Moab's birth is found in Numbers 22:4-6. Here we find the Balak, the king of the Moabites trying to hire Balaam to curse the people of Israel. The Moabites were historically a people who hated and fought against Israel. In the Book of Judges we find that God used Moab to punish Israel for 18 years and delivered them through the hand of Ehud (Judges 3:12-30). David warred with the Moabites and put them under servitude in 2:Sam. 8:1-2. We find in 1Kings 11:1-2 that Solomon committed sin through marrying Moabite women among others whom God forbade marriage with. Jehoshaphat fought with Moab and defeated them (through the intervention of God) in 2 Kings chapter 3.

The consequences are apparent. How many thousands died through the result of the sin committed by Lot's oldest daughter with her father?

Ammon is much in the same light as Moab. In Judges 3 it is Ammon that allies with Moab to bring Israel into servitude. In Judges 10 and 11 it is Jephthah that delivers Israel from Ammon. This is the Jephthah that made the vow to God to sacrifice the first thing that came through the doors of his house if he returned in peace and victory from fighting Ammon. This turned out to be his only daughter whom he did with according to his vow to God.

The end of Moab and Ammon is not a pretty picture. The prophecy in the Word of God is thus: Zephaniah 2:8-11 I have heard the reproach of Moab, and the revilings of the children of Ammon, whereby they have reproached my people, and magnified themselves against their border. 9 Therefore as I live, saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, Surely Moab shall be as Sodom, and the children of Ammon as Gomorrah, even the breeding of nettles, and saltpits, and a perpetual desolation: the residue of my people shall spoil them, and the remnant of my people shall possess them. 10 This shall they have for their pride, because they have reproached and magnified themselves against the people of the LORD of hosts. 11 The LORD will be terrible unto them: for he will famish all the gods of the earth; and men shall worship him, every one from his place, even all the isles of the heathen.

As the history of Moab and Ammon started with the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah it shall end with a similar destruction. While the daughters of Lot did not look back as their mother had done and pay and immediate price, their children went back to their roots of sin that had brought the first destruction and their birth. Moab and Ammon might not have looked back to their roots but they certainly went back.

the Moabitess in the lineage of Jesus Christ.

All sin is against God .

We are all accountable to God for our words
and actions.

Romans 14:12 So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God.

Hillbilly you wrote -- Many is the person who has said to himself: "If I sin I hurt no one but myself".

And this reminded me of Jesus teaching
us in Matthew 24 the following --

35 For I was an hungred, and ye gave
me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink:
I was a stranger, and ye took me in:
36 Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick,
and ye visited me: I was in prison,
and ye came unto me. 37 Then shall
the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when
saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty,
and gave thee drink? 38 When saw we thee a
stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed
thee? 39 Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison,
and came unto thee? 40 And the King shall answer
and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch
as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.

41 Then shall he say also unto them on
the left hand, Depart
from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared
for the devil and his angels:
42 For I was an hungred, and ye gave
me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink:
43 I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked,
and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not.
44 Then shall they also answer him,
saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred,
or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick,
or in prison, and did not minister unto thee?
45 Then shall he answer them, saying,
Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it
not to one of the least of these, ye did it
not to me.
46 And these shall go away into
everlasting punishment: but the righteous
into life eternal.

Also of the time when Paul was first Saul and Jesus said to him -- Acts 22:7 And I fell unto the ground, and heard a voice saying unto me, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? This was spoken after Saul was persecuting those who were Christian - going into their homes beating and jailing them .

Our relationship is that close --that Christ said to Saul --
Why thou persecutest thou me ?

Indeed what we have done to another we have done against God and this all brings to mind the importance of the commandment to love thy neighbor as thyself -Mark 12:31 And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.

I must admit to falling short in this area. I find it difficult at times to love my neighbor out of a pure heart .

May God continue to be merciful unto me .May He keep me on His Potter's wheel shaping me into something that will finally truly honor this commandment in a way that He intended and is pleasing to Him .

God bless you always,

Julie

is very true. As in the case of Ruth you certainly have the exception just as you do with some Muslims today. Exceptions prove the rule or it wouldn't be an exception. Every Pharisee had the opportunity to turn to Jesus just as Saul of Tarsus. I am reminded also that Orpah, Ruth's sister-in-law had the same opportunity as Ruth. She chose to go back to her people and their gods.

We are all sinners and just being born after the Adam nature makes us unclean and unfit for fellowship with God. It is why we must be born again into spiritual beings after the heavenly and not after the earthly.

My aim was to point out that sin has unseen and unintended consequences that may have it's effect through many many generations.

I am glad and thankful of the fact that God can take a sinner such as I and clean me up. Not that I am sinless not that I am worthy of anything. The hymn says "Amazing grace, how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me. I once was lost but now am found, Was blind by now I see.

What I see is someone unlovable being loved.
Someone dirty being made clean.
Someone without the capacity for true love to be made able to love.

The ground is level at the foot of the cross and no one who comes with a broken heart and contrite spirit is turned away.

Thanks be unto God for His unspeakable gift.

Thanks Julie.
