What is the difference between the Torah and the Talmud? Do the Jews use both? I know it is the Torah that they use in their scrolls and worship services but what is the Talmud? All the articles I read that are detrimental to the Jews appear to be based on the Talmud and I find that confusing. Why would any practicing Jews bother with it?

The reason I asked you to explain the difference is this article that Ken posted on the Religion 1 and Popourrie forums. He wallows in this kind of stuff and, you know, after a while it gets old and I'm don't know how to counter his anti-semitism or if I should just ignore it. Probably best to ignore it and not "throw pearls to the swine."

The Torah is the 5 Books of Moses and is the foundation of all Jewish Law.

The Talmud, as I understand it, is the interpredtations put on the Torah by the Rabbinacal teachers.

Probably as good a comparison that could be made would be our Constitution (Torah) and then all the laws built on that constitution. (Talmud)

Just as we need to get hack to the Constitution the Jews need to get back to the Torah.

This is simplified but when you think of all the Jewish (Orthodox Jewish) do's and don'ts that came about by interpreting the Torah you can readily see the parallel and see how the Torah became burdensome by the splitting of hairs in the Talmud.

I always wondered, too.

Connie, take Ken's stuff for what it's worth--nothing. He's said it all so many times, you'd think he'd give it up and move on by now. Not sure who he's trying to convince anymore.

I hope it's okay but I took the liberty of posting your answer verbatim at PP to show the other posters how Ken tries to twist things to suit his own agenda and anti-semitism and gloms on to articles written by disaffected Jews.

Here's Ken's response. Hate to be a nuisance about this but, as you can see, he's always got an answer and I'm not sharp enough to contradict him.

The Jews say that two versions of the Law were given to Moses on Mt. Sinai ... the first was the "written" Ten Commandments, and the second was the so-called "Oral Traditions." The Oral Traditions became the Talmud. And, the Oral Traditions were also known as the "Traditions of the Elders," which Jesus stated made the Scripture to "no effect." To the Jews, the "traditions of the elders" supersedes the Bible.

Hillbilly: Great explanation. Thanks!

Dori: I try to but sometimes it's difficult as I'm sure you know.

.... show him how ignorant he is about some things, but it doesn't do much good, does it? Who knows... maybe one day it will strike a chord. We'd better not hold our breath, though. Hee hee....
