Genesis 21:9-13 And Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, which she had born unto Abraham, mocking. 10 Wherefore she said unto Abraham, Cast out this bondwoman and her son: for the son of this bondwoman shall not be heir with my son, even with Isaac. 11 And the thing was very grievous in Abraham's sight because of his son. 12 And God said unto Abraham, Let it not be grievous in thy sight because of the lad, and because of thy bondwoman; in all that Sarah hath said unto thee, hearken unto her voice; for in Isaac shall thy seed be called. 13 And also of the son of the bondwoman will I make a nation, because he is thy seed.

When you sow to the wind you will reap the whirlwind (Hosea 8:7). For at least 13 years Ishmael had been the apple of daddy's eye. The same could not be said of Sarah. Her hasty urging on a willing Abraham had brought about the situation that existed on the day of the weaning of Isaac. One could not blame Ishmael for jealousy as he suddenly found himself neglected in the matter of the son of Abraham and Sarah. Isaac would now receive what Ishmael had thought to receive. What had been toleration from Sarah was no more. When Sarah saw Ishmael making fun of Isaac he had crossed a line that he would not be allowed to cross back over.

The demand from Sarah is cast him out. "Get rid of him he is not about to get anything that rightfully belongs to my son." The reaction from Abraham is predictable. After all Ishmael was his son even if he wasn't Sarah's son. The scriptures tell us that this "thing was very grievous in Abraham's sight because of his son". I get the idea that Abraham was not going to do it until God intervened. To lessen the hurt God also tells Abraham that He would also make Ishmael a great nation because he was Abraham's seed also. Actually 12 nations spring from Ishmael. (See Gen. 25: 12-16) Note also that the promise of Ishmael becoming the father of a great nation was not because he was being cast out or because of any worth on his part. It was simply because he was a blood son of Abraham.

God, in His sovereignty steps in and tells Abraham to listen to Sarah and do as she demanded "for in Isaac shall thy seed be called". We are now firmly on the grounds of "election". Election is where God, for His own purpose and in His own sovereign and divine will sets aside the first and establishes the second. Paul speaks of this and cites the above passage: Romans 9:9-11 For this is the word of promise, At this time will I come, and Sara shall have a son. 10 And not only this; but when Rebecca also had conceived by one, even by our father Isaac; 11 (For the children being not yet born, neither having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works, but of him that calleth;)

God had determined that through Abraham and Sarah the coming "seed of the woman" (Gen. 3:15) would in time be born. The seed is the One that would bruise the head of the serpent. He is the coming Messiah. We need to realize this when we look at the situation here. Satan has been very busy trying to mess with the lineage to the Messiah to render it unfit and therefore get God to disqualify this line. If he could have done this he would have defeated God's plan. As it is impossible to defeat God or take Him by surprise we must understand that God has prepared for every contingency. To illustrate this let's take a look at the prophecy of the Messiah springing from Judah. Genesis 49:10-11 The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh (reference to the Messiah) come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be. 11 Binding his foal unto the vine, and his ass's colt unto the choice vine; he washed his garments in wine, and his clothes in the blood of grapes: Now let's look at one of Satan's efforts to destroy this prophecy.

Exodus 32:7-10 And the LORD said unto Moses, Go, get thee down; for thy people, which thou broughtest out of the land of Egypt, have corrupted themselves: 8 They have turned aside quickly out of the way which I commanded them: they have made them a molten calf, and have worshipped it, and have sacrificed thereunto, and said, These be thy gods, O Israel, which have brought thee up out of the land of Egypt. 9And the LORD said unto Moses, I have seen this people, and, behold, it is a stiffnecked people: 10 Now therefore let me alone, that my wrath may wax hot against them, and that I may consume them: and I will make of thee a great nation.

We are told in John 10:35 that scripture cannot be broken. The prophecy was that the coming King would be from the tribe of Judah. Moses was from the tribe of Levi therefore was not in the lineage of the King . God in His wrath tells Moses to get out of His way (quit interceding) and let Him destroy Israel and He would take the promise He had given to Abraham and place it on him. The problem then is how could God do this and preserve both prophecies? First we will look to the likely fact that Aaron would be killed for his part in the making and worshipping the golden calf. (Deut. 9:20-21) Again the intercession of Moses brought deliverance to Aaron and Israel but what if God had destroyed them? The answer lies in Moses taking Aaron's wife Elisheba to himself and raising children through her. Her father was Amminadab who was of the tribe of Judah. Amminadab was also in the direct line of the Messiah. 1 Chronicles 2:10-15 And Ram begat Amminadab; and Amminadab begat Nahshon, prince of the children of Judah; 11 And Nahshon begat Salma, and Salma begat Boaz, 12 And Boaz (this is the Boaz that married Ruth of the Book of Ruth) begat Obed, and Obed begat Jesse, 13 And Jesse begat his firstborn Eliab, and Abinadab the second, and Shimma the third, 14 Nethaneel the fourth, Raddai the fifth, 15 Ozem the sixth, David the seventh: The seventh son of Jesse was King David.

Luke 2:4-5 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:) 5 To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.

The lineage can also be found in Matthew 1:4-6. In order to fulfill the scriptures God would have killed Aaron with rebellious Israel and spared Aaron's wife. Moses could have taken Elisheba and raised children to Judah and the line of kings would have gone through Elisheba of the tribe of Judah Scripture would not have been violated and Satan would still have been defeated in his plan to mess up the seed.

While I have shown one avenue around the problem it is also true that Moses could have taken any woman to wife from the tribe of Judah and the prophecy could still have been fulfilled.

Because of God's decree Abraham obeys God, heeds to Sarah's demand and Hagar and her son "hit the road".

Your mention of 1 Chronicles (I call it the book of begats) reminded me of 1 Chronicles 4:10 and Bruce Wilkinson's little book called "The Prayer of Jabez" which garnered a lot of attention a few years ago. I found it very interesting that Jabez' prayer came smack dab in the middle of all those begats.
