In todays email I got the following from Jim Sullivan, my old school friend that I told you about Some time back. I thought that you might enjoy reading it."A great early Fall day.
It has been over a month since last communicating on my cancer status.
The mountain has been climbed but there are some hills in front of me for full recovery. Radiation and Chemo treatments to my esophagus received at the Albany VA unit were admnistered so well that it has changed my consideration for surgery to remove tumors during a family meeting.
My medical team including the head surgeon at the Syracuse VA Hospital are in agreement that it is best to not consider surgery. The tumor is dead and as long as I can swallow, they do not recommend surgery. The procedure would be difficult and extremely traumatizing. Recovery would be 14/18 months and would require life long maintenance. Regular cancer screening will be required and Chemo port will remain in my left shoulder for a while.
The ability to routinely consume almost all solid foods has provided another piece of good news. J-tube pump feeding during the day was eliminated based on recent weight gain. NIght feeding is still intact but being reduced and will be eliminated in 2/3 months or less. My legs are in bad need of exercise as there was little to no use for four months. Slowly working on it. The main concerns now are blood clots on both lungs. Medical team feels I will stay on the blood thinner Coumadin to dissolve them for 6 to 9 months minimum.
My family and I are thankful for the upgrades, realizing positive attitude and prayer has been a big factor in my body accepting procedures that have allowed these results. It is impossible to name everyone who sent prayers and well wishes by cards, e-mails, phone calls or just a silent thought for my recovery. Each of you have boosted my spirits and attitude, assisting in being active cancer free. God Bless!
Thanking everyone from the bottom of my heart for your support. We are very grateful - Love & Peace!
Jim & Bonnie too
