Subject: Light in a Dark World

Matthew 25:8 And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lamps are gone out.

"For our lamps are gone out." The story of the 10 virgins doctrinally is aimed at a time of the Lord's return in the Advent. It shows a division of those who have light and those who don't. In this brief look at the verse I don't want to focus on doctrine but a spiritual truth that applies to all of God's people in all ages. Jesus admonishes us in Matthew 5:16 to "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven." He said in Matthew 5:14 just prior: "Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid." The Apostle Paul said of the Church in Philippians 2:15 That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world; Jesus said in John 8:12 "--I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life."

Clearly, from the scriptures we see that God's children are to show forth the light of Jesus in this present evil world. In looking at the verse under discussion we can see that the 5 foolish had at one time their lights burning, else they wouldn't have declared their lights had gone out. This is the thought I would like for us to ponder. How bright is your light shining? Also we might ask; "What are you doing with your light? Finally the question "Have you carelessly let your light go out?"

Consider these words of Jesus concerning light. Luke 11:33 No man, when he hath lighted a candle, putteth it in a secret place, neither under a bushel, but on a candlestick, that they which come in may see the light. Is our light in a secret place, under a bushel or displayed openly on a candlestick? God never intended us to be secret Christians. Even in times of persecution Christians are to be Christians and depend on God for deliverance if persecuted for our faith. Think back to Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego. All 4 were threatened with death for their faith yet they in unwavering manner kept their light on the candlestick. God delivered and blessed all 4 for their faith and integrity toward God and man.

These and many others are our examples. We need to shine forth as they and others. We need not let a crooked and perverse nation dim or put out our light. We need not to hide our light but always keep the wick trimmed, the vessel full of oil and the lamp held high to provide light for us and the world. If you feel your light of testimony has gone out then maybe it's time for you to get in your prayer closet and as God to re-ignite the flame that was once shining so bright. God will honor that prayer if you will sincerely ask for a bright testimony.
