Genesis 24:63 "And Isaac went out to meditate in the field at the eventide: --"

Such memories this verse stirs in my heart and mind. Eventide; beautiful and serene eventide. Pictures flood my mind of a time as a young boy on my grand parents farm I would gaze westward as the flaming red orb would meet the horizon casting long shadows and tinting the landscape with a reddish hue that only the setting sun can paint. Off to the south would often be thunderheads flashing their bright fingers of lightning from cloud to cloud. It was a peaceful time and it often gave impetus to consider the works of the mighty Creator in the landscape before me.

I can attest to Isaac's wandering out in the field as being an act of prayer and communion with God. Isaac was waiting and wondering whether his bride was soon to be joining him and he would be talking to God about her. He had to have been wondering whether his father's servant was successful in his mission or not. "What would she look like?" "How will she feel when she meets me?" Isaac's musings would be conversation with God and self as words and thoughts would pour from his heart.

How can I know Isaac's meditations to be on this order? I can't for sure but considering the journey Abraham's servant had been sent on and his mission I cannot fathom Isaac's ponderings to be otherwise. Think about Rebekah. Don't you know her thoughts were on a similar vein. She was going to meet a husband she had never seen except through the image formed in her mind by the words spoken to her by Eliezer, the trusted servant of Abraham. Meditations normally are about the things closest to your heart at the time of meditation. They are conversations between you and God.

This evening I walked out past the barn and through the pasture to the woods as the sun was setting. The beautiful colors were on the trees and the fading light caused the colors to change from vivid to subdued. The brighter reds took on the darker color of blood then to brown. Bright yellows turned to a golden color before taking on a dull yellow hue. Though the wind lay still it was as though the trees were moving with the changing colors. As I gazed around me there was a peace in my heart and love toward God that welled up in me. "God, you are so wonderful and magnificent!" I don't know whether I spoke aloud or silently from my heart but they were spoken loud enough for God to hear.

I confessed to God that I did not deserve all He had bestowed upon me in my 67 years of life. "God your grace and mercy are without limit and I praise you for your grace poured out on me." I reflected on the goodness He had bestowed upon me with the family and home He had given me. My wife, the children and the grandchildren. "God, I am truly blessed and I don't deserve it." "Lord Jesus; Thank you!" "Lord Jesus, my God and Saviour, I truly thank you."

Not a one of us should need a field at sundown to meditate on our wonderful God and His abundant grace bestowed on each of us. We should be able to commune with God any time we can get alone. In a closet, on the bed at night or just walking down the street or wandering around in the yard.

God is always there waiting on us to share conversation with us.

To God be the glory. Praise His wonderful and matchless name. In case anyone has forgotten; His name is Jesus.

I meditate daily, sometimes several times daily.

...or driving home from somewhere. I point it out to anyone with me and marvel at the serenity of it all. Sometimes I pause to reflect on God's blessings, too, but will strive to do it every time I notice God's nature around me. Thank you, Hillbilly. 8-)
