Subject: Engraved in His Hands

Isaiah 49:16 "Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands;---"

There are many verses of scripture that evoke mental images of the mercy of God. This is one of them for me. What stands out to me in this 1st part of verse 16 in Isaiah 49 is the vision of iron on rock. When Moses wrote the second set of Ten Commandments, (Exodus 34:27-28) after breaking the first, he would have had to have used an engraving tool to chisel the words into the stone. God used His finger (Deut. 9:10) but Moses wasn't God. We find in the Book of Job evidence this was the normal practice when words were to endure throughout the ages. Paper and skins deteriorate but stone lasts for ages and ages.

I see in the verse above a picture of something God told Israel many years before it actually happened. The context of Isaiah 49:16 is Israel stating that God had essentially abandoned and forgotten them. Isaiah 49:14-16 But Zion said, The LORD hath forsaken me, and my Lord hath forgotten me. 15 Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? yea, they may forget, yet will I not forget thee. 16 Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands; thy walls are continually before me.

What a comfort for Zion to know that God still remembered them. God could never forget them but their comfort was to be future to the time. The verse presents a beautiful picture of salvation through Jesus Christ. God's people are engraved in the hands of Jesus and they were engraved with iron. Two rough iron nails engraved the hands of Jesus approximately 2,000 years ago. The nails engraved the "Rock of our salvation" and the engraving will stand throughout eternity. The prints of the nails were put into the hands of our Saviour by unjust and wicked men and those nail prints in the hands and feet of Jesus, as well as the scar of the sword entering the side of Jesus will be the only man made things in heaven. Those scars were there after Jesus arose from the grave and Jesus presented them as evidence to Thomas.

John 20:24-28 But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came. 25 The other disciples therefore said unto him, We have seen the Lord. But he said unto them, Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe. 26 And after eight days again his disciples were within, and Thomas with them: then came Jesus, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, Peace be unto you. 27 Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing. 28 And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God.

Oh yes, God's people are engraved in the hands of Jesus and as long as those scars are in His hands they will be a memorial and testimony of God's love and promises to His people. Whether Jew or Gentile God can never forget those He died for. His love is such for us that He can never forget whom He has purchased with His own blood. All of us who have surrendered to His claims on our souls are His "seed" through this purchase. Isaiah wrote concerning this transaction: "When thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed". From the cross Jesus could look across time and see all of His spiritual offspring. He knew each and every one as they were "engraved in His hands".

I have read that verse many times and missed the point. God just recently showed me the connection and and I only wrote about what He gave me to write.

I made one error in the writing. It was a spear (John 19:34) and not a sword that pierced Jesus' side. I don't know why I wrote sword.

And weaponry the Romans used in those times. Not a big mistake.
And stop selling yourself short. You may have been led by God to the understanding, but it requires a gift that is God-given to be able to impart that to others so they, too, have a better understanding of the Scriptures. Thank you for sharing that talent with us. Sending you a big hug. 8-)
