Subject: Anchored

Hebrews 6:18-19 That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us: 19 Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil;

Without doubt we all have clear understanding of what and anchor is and what it does. Without an anchor a ship will drift aimlessly or be carried by winds or current to where we do not want to go. The heart of the passage above speaks of an anchor that anchors the soul. This raises a question in my mind that I would like to put to you for you to meditate on.

What has anchored you to the Christian faith and by extension Jesus Christ? What is it that keeps you stedfast and unmovable in your faith and belief in Him? Much of the world considers faith in Jesus and tenets of the Church as pure and utter foolishness. They look on us as idiots having confidence in a pipe dream.

Here we are, believing in a man who claims to be God incarnate and who was killed for his claims. The story goes that He was resurrected the third day after his death on a cruel cross. Over 500 people claimed to have seen Him after His resurrection (1 Cor. 15:6) but then He mysteriously vanished into the sky 40 days after His resurrection (Acts 1:9-10). How can anyone in their right mind believe in such a story?

The anchor of hope in the passage above is the immutability of God's promises but how can we know such a God and know He cannot lie? Is it faith without proof? I dare say it is faith because of the proof ! A skeptic one time asked a man of faith what proof he relied on to know that the Bible is true. The Christian answered in two words; the Jew. Here in the passage above we have the writer of Hebrews citing in essence this same thing as proof that God exists. What he cited had been written down hundreds of years earlier.

In chapter 3 of the Book of Exodus we have the account of Moses going to Mount Horeb with the flock of his father in law. As he was in the mount he noticed a very strange sight. There was a bush on the mountain that was on fire but it would not burn up. God called Moses from that bush to lead the Jews out of the bondage of Egypt to the land God had promised to Abraham 400 years earlier.

The two immutable things referenced in verse 18 takes us back to verse 14. "Saying, Surely blessing I will bless thee, and multiplying I will multiply thee." These promises were given in Genesis 17 and have been the anchor of the faith of the Hebrew people since the promise was made. Satan has done everything in his power to make God break His promises to these people and in 4,000 years of history that promise has not been broken. Every attack imaginable has been carried out on the Jewish people since that time and although Israel has been on fire with the trials and tribulations of these attacks she has been as a bush that will not be consumed by these fires. Israel is this burning bush and this bush aflame would be a much better emblem on their flag than the so called Star of David. Israel may have rejected her Messiah but Jesus is not done with Israel. Israel will repent and believe one day and then the fire of tribulation will be extinguished.

How, you might ask can we be sure all this is true. I say simply the marvelous, miraculous Book we call the Bible. It records the history of the Jewish people and then the Church. There has been proof after proof of the veracity of the Word of God. God gave us this record and if God gave it then it must be as true as He is. It must be as perfect as He is. If it is not perfect then God did not have a hand in it.

My anchor for my soul is the Word of God. It is my authority and it is where I go when doubts and questions arise. I have found it as an anchor that keeps me from being blown off course from where I would wish to be. When I pray I find myself citing God's own word's to Him and I find comfort in realizing He honors His Word. It was not by accident that God had John write these words in the beginning of the Book of John: John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. Again in 1 John 1:1 we find written: "That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life; "

You cannot know God apart from His Word. Every true description of God comes from His Word. Your moral compass comes from His Words. You cannot know God's will for your life apart from His Word. Prophesies in God's Word that have come to pass assure us of the truth in His written Word.

You cannot be saved apart from His Word. 1 Corinthians 1:21 For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe. What did the preachers preach that brought salvation? The Word of God!

Dear reader, if you feel you are not anchored but are adrift by every wind of doctrine or unsettled feelings in your heart let me direct you to the Anchor that will hold fast when the storms of life come your way. The Anchor that holds is the Word of God. Read it and believe it. Believe it even when it seems at face value to be impossible. Stand on God's Word and He will always stand by and for you!

As one who isn't diligent in her Bible reading, I have trusted based on the testimony of others that my belief in the Lord is not unfounded. It is through the words of devout Bible-believing Christians that I have wanted to know more of the Word. It's all there for me to read, but my inability to fully comprehend scriptures has always held me back. That is why I treasure you, Hillbilly. You have made the Word come to life for me and made me want to know more. 8-)
