Subject: Ugly no more

Job 25:4-6

5 Behold even to the moon, and it shineth not; yea, the stars are not pure in his sight. 6 How much less man, that is a worm? and the son of man, which is a worm?

Psalms 22:6 But I am a worm, and no man; a reproach of men, and despised of the people.

Isaiah 41:14 Fear not, thou worm Jacob, and ye men of Israel; I will help thee, saith the LORD, and thy redeemer, the Holy One of Israel.

Romans 8:21 Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.

Similes and allegories are all throughout the Bible. We may glean great truths from the study of them. Here in three of these scriptures man is likened unto a lowly worm. Looking carefully we can see that in Job 25:6 we have "man" and the "son of man" likened to a worm. In Psalms 22:8 we have a person stating "I am a worm" and close examination will show us that Psalm 22 is a prophecy of Jesus Christ. For instance look at verse 1 of that passage. Psalms 22:1 My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? why art thou so far from helping me, and from the words of my roaring? Words uttered from the cross. Look further in the passage: Psalms 22:7-8 All they that see me laugh me to scorn: they shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying, 8 He trusted on the LORD that he would deliver him: let him deliver him, seeing he delighted in him. This time words spoken against Him while dying His horrible death for us.

The verse in Romans is quite a contrast isn't it. The worm is without doubt a very lowly creature. It is in itself repulsive to most. How could anyone look an ugly worm and say; "My, what a lovely creature". I dare say that if some mischievous person put one on you there would be quite a commotion and possible even a little or loud scream.

Look at the words of the Lord to Jacob in the verse cited in Isaiah. "Fear not, thou worm Jacob, and ye men of Israel". God's chosen people are not spared the belittling similitude of being a worm. Where the verses in Job, Psalms and Isaiah bring humiliation notice that Romans gives us hope. "--The creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty--".

Here is where I think God has given us in nature a great picture and lesson of what He intends to do with His true children one day. Let's look at this "worm" in nature. Let's watch it as it comes forth from an egg into a miniscule caterpillar. (yes I know this is not a true worm but we all call them worms don't we and it is through this "worm" God gives us His picture) That worm eats and grows and matures as an ugly worm that is largely despised. One day however that all changes as it comes time for it to be "wrapped in it's grave clothes" and undergoes a picture of death. For a few weeks that worm remains in it's coffin until one day it is awakened and comes out of it's coffin. Lo and behold however what we see emerging is not ugly anymore. Why, it's utterly beautiful and not only that it doesn't have to crawl around any more but it mounts up with "wings as the eagles" (Isaiah 40:31) and flies. It doesn't have to eat leaves and grass anymore as a beast but now sips the nectar of God's beautiful flowers.

God has given us a grand picture of the resurrection of the body when "It is sown in corruption; it is raised in incorruption " (1 Cor. 15:42)

Look at what was put in that borrowed tomb and look what emerged! The glorified body of Jesus shows us exactly what change will take place in our bodies when we burst forth in glory and fly away to Beulah Land. Born in a body prepared for earth. Raised in a body made fit for heaven in the presence of our glorious Saviour.

God shows us that even the lowliest of us has worth and can emerge clean and spotless in his sight. He is truly our Redeemer.
