Luke 15:16-18 And he would fain have filled his belly with the husks that the swine did eat: and no man gave unto him. 17 And when he came to himself, he said, How many hired servants of my father's have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger! 18 I will arise and go to my father, -------.

Many times in scripture there is the plain meaning and then a spiritual application or meaning which many times is more important than what is actually said. The story of the prodigal son has several such spiritual truths apart from the story which gives a great truth in itself.

We all see the selfish rebellion in the actual story and we can see the result of sowing wild oats and reaping the results. The story moves on to repentance and humility in an otherwise proud and foolish young man who learns his lesson. What I have selected to focus on is a spiritual truth that may not be apparent to some.

How many Christians have you known who have left the father's table and have started dining at the hog trough of the world? They were well fed and satisfied spiritually at one time but for what ever reason they started tasting of the meats of carnal living at the devil's table. The more they sampled and the longer they stayed away from God's table the leaner they became spiritually until they were showing signs of spiritual starvation. They seldom if ever eat any spiritual food any more and for all intents and purposes they no longer are the person you once knew. Their actions and speech now make them unrecognizable as a Christian.

The steady diet of sewage they are eating at movies, t.v. and the slop they are eating of at internet blogs is destroying what was once a spiritually healthy soul.

Jesus said one time: "It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life. " (John 6:63) Jesus was explaining to His disciples that He was not talking of eating His literal body but devouring the Word that was made flesh (Jn. 1:14) People don't seem to want to eat at the Lord's table any more as they once did. Each generation want's the spiritual food less and less and we are seeing the fruits of the rejecting of the "Manna from Heaven". Amos prophesied of this in Amos 8:11 where he wrote: "Behold, the days come, saith the Lord GOD, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD: "

Is it any wonder that this generation treats fornication, adultery and homosexuality as if it is perfectly acceptable behavior. Is it any wonder the divorce rate is so high? Is it any wonder so many of our children are abused? Is it any wonder so many couples shun marriage for "partnership", not wanting the legal commitment that vows demand?

If you quote scripture you are a "bible thumper" or a religious fanatic. Because people have stopped eating from the Lord's table and have joined the prodigal down at the pig sty they see all religion as the same and to be rejected. They see no difference between mainstream Christianity and Islam or Buddhism. They are ignorant of God's holiness and His demand for us to be holy also.

We should remember the "hand writing on the wall" was written by the fingers of God (Dan. 5:5) just as the Ten Commandments and ultimately His holy Word. John 12:48 He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.

It is my hope and prayer that those who were once close to the Father and dined at His spiritual table will come to their senses and return to the Father, the food and fellowship they once enjoyed at his table. He has plenty and to spare and the invitation is always extended to "Come and dine".

Wonderful study, HB!
I especially liked this:
"We should remember the "hand writing on the wall" was written by the fingers of God (Dan. 5:5) just as the Ten Commandments and ultimately His holy Word. John 12:48 He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day."
Too many have blinded themselves to that handwriting, choosing to turn their backs on "religion" and not realizing they are really turning away from God. I pray they will see the handwriting before it is too late.

Thank You Hillbilly - Very Convicting! I LOVE Hearing the word of God preached and listening (reading) you here and Dave on the billboard but I am slack on reading and studying it myself outside of my Jesus Calling devotional which I read daily and it has scripture verses written out. Please pray for me. I DO want to receive His Words and not be judged for lack of knowledge - an example being for the very first time I read the words in Proverbs "He who is slack in his work is brother to him who destroys." Boy was THAT convicting! I had Never read those words before but I Will be judged by them and I may not receive a "Well done my good and faithful servant" if I do not heed them. God bless...
