Genesis 47:27-31 And Israel dwelt in the land of Egypt, in the country of Goshen; and they had possessions therein, and grew, and multiplied exceedingly. 28 And Jacob lived in the land of Egypt seventeen years: so the whole age of Jacob was an hundred forty and seven years. 29 And the time drew nigh that Israel must die: and he called his son Joseph, and said unto him, If now I have found grace in thy sight, put, I pray thee, thy hand under my thigh, and deal kindly and truly with me; bury me not, I pray thee, in Egypt: 30 But I will lie with my fathers, and thou shalt carry me out of Egypt, and bury me in their buryingplace. And he said, I will do as thou hast said. 31 And he said, Swear unto me. And he sware unto him. And Israel bowed himself upon the bed's head.
Israel settles in to their new home and God gave to them in abundance. The Egyptian people were ruined and owned nothing but God gave Israel possessions in a foreign land. As they remained true to God they "grew, and multiplied exceedingly." This would one day soon give rise to suspicion and jealousy toward Israel from the Egyptians as they saw their numbers being challenged by the aliens who had come to their land for "a better life.". God was taking wealth from Egypt and giving wealth to Israel. We have a similar parallel happening around the world, especially in Europe and America. Immigration is threatening to eat up the resources of working middle class in the U.S. today. Egypt, for following false and pagan gods was soon to come under judgment. God is using similar tools to weaken and ultimately bring down the power of America. As we have turned our backs as a nation on the one true God and have followed gods of our own making we can see the hand writing on the wall. Our only hope is repentance. Only God can bring us up out of this mess of our own making but we have to turn to Him. Time is swiftly running out.
What Jacob thought would be only a short time in the land of Egypt turns out to be for the rest of his life which was 17 years from the entering of Egypt at the age of 130 years. Jacob makes his last wishes known and his wishes are but one that is recorded. "Don't leave me here!". Jacob's beloved land was Canaan land. It was the Promised Land and Egypt held nothing for him, not even for his corpse.
Looking at the typology of the situation we see in Jacob's desire to go home, even in death our own desires for a better land. Jacob knew about the resurrection. The resurrection was nothing God had kept secret from his creation. Job is the oldest book in the Bible. It was written concurrent with the times of Abraham and Job knew of the resurrection. Job 19:25-27 For I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth: 26 And though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God: 27 Whom I shall see for myself, and mine eyes shall behold, and not another; though my reins be consumed within me.
What a wonderful testimony to be able to give. "I know"! No doubt in the mind of Job as to his future. An old saying is "Home is where the heart is" and Jacob's heart was on the land he he had been so long away from. From the time he left his father and mother after stealing his brother's blessings his mind had been on home. Now he was once again in a foreign land and all he could think of was going home. He knew he would not see the promised land again in his lifetime but he knew that in the resurrection he would see home again.
I think one thing that makes people want to be buried in a certain place is the thought of seeing familiar surroundings as they are resurrected from the grave. We want to be buried with loved ones close by with the thought of being with them when we enter heaven. Nothing wrong with any of this. I have my grave site picked out where I and my wife will be buried if the Lord tarries until after I am gone. I have reserved plots for other family members should they want to be buried where I am buried.
Jacob is making his last wishes known as he realizes the day of his death is fast approaching. We all should do the same. We might not have the time to make plans later. Death could be around the next curve in the road or on our beds at night from a massive heart attack. We just don't know and unless we have told others or have it written down they are not going to know.
Jacob desires this wish to the extent he makes his son Joseph to swear by the strength of Jacob (the thigh muscle is the strongest in the body.)
The relaxing of Jacob's body as he let his head fall to his chest showed he was now at peace. He was ready. All he could do he had done. All that would remain would be to call family in and give them his last words of blessing and warning.
