Genesis 49:16-18 Dan shall judge his people, as one of the tribes of Israel. 17 Dan shall be a serpent by the way, an adder in the path, that biteth the horse heels, so that his rider shall fall backward. 18 I have waited for thy salvation, O LORD.
As there was a Judas among the 12 disciples there is a devil among the 12 tribes. The name "Dan" means judge. The early part of the prophecy is fulfilled in Samson who was of the tribe of Dan. His character to say the least was less than honorable but God used him to bring judgment against the Philistines.
"Dan shall be a serpent by the way". Jacob must have seen something he deemed very disturbing about the future of the tribe that sprang from this first son of the handmaid of Rachel. Dan was the result of Rachel's impatience with God not giving her children of her own. Trying to "help God out" has never worked out well and it never will. The reference to being a serpent has it's implications in identifying fore-shadowings of the anti-Christ. The serpent, of course, first shows up in the garden as the adversary. He is against all that God is for. He has always desired worship for himself and has moved against God's people to get them to commit spiritual whoredom. The Danites led the Israel into idolatry with the fashioning of the golden calves in Samaria and in Bethel. The choice of calves is not without it's significance.
Jeroboam, the king of Israel, feared the people of the 10 northern tribes would rebel and return to Judah and be one again with Judah. Thus Jeroboam felt his power threatened as he knew that God had ordained that only kings from the tribe of Judah held rightful sovereignty. He grand plan was straight from the devil. 1 Kings 12:26-33 And Jeroboam said in his heart, Now shall the kingdom return to the house of David: 27 If this people go up to do sacrifice in the house of the LORD at Jerusalem, then shall the heart of this people turn again unto their lord, even unto Rehoboam king of Judah, and they shall kill me, and go again to Rehoboam king of Judah. 28 Whereupon the king took counsel, and made two calves of gold, and said unto them, It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem: behold thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt. 29 And he set the one in Bethel, and the other put he in Dan. 30 And this thing became a sin: for the people went to worship before the one, even unto Dan. 31 And he made an house of high places, and made priests of the lowest of the people, which were not of the sons of Levi. 32 And Jeroboam ordained a feast in the eighth month, on the fifteenth day of the month, like unto the feast that is in Judah, and he offered upon the altar. So did he in Bethel, sacrificing unto the calves that he had made: and he placed in Bethel the priests of the high places which he had made. 33 So he offered upon the altar which he had made in Bethel the fifteenth day of the eighth month, even in the month which he had devised of his own heart; and ordained a feast unto the children of Israel: and he offered upon the altar, and burnt incense.
The worship of golden calves is not without it's significance. Lucifer, who was renamed Satan, had the face of a calf in heaven. He was "the anointed cherub that covereth" before his fall. (Ezek. 28:14) Cherubs had the face of a calf and feet of a calf. Hence the calling of the devil "ol' splitfoot". (Dan is called a serpent and lest we forget the Cherub, Lucifer, became a serpent.) The term is common in the south among the elderly but is fading as the old prayer warriors are dying out. We find this little gem concerning the original face of the devil by comparing scripture with scripture. In the Book of Ezekiel in chapter 1 we are given the faces of the "four living creatures" that Ezekiel sees in his vision. Ezekiel 1:10 As for the likeness of their faces, they four had the face of a man, and the face of a lion, on the right side: and they four had the face of an ox on the left side; they four also had the face of an eagle. Take note of the underlined "face of an ox". Now we go to Ezekiel 10:14 And every one had four faces: the first face was the face of a cherub, and the second face was the face of a man, and the third the face of a lion, and the fourth the face of an eagle. In chapter 1 it is man, lion, ox and eagle. In chapter 10 it is cherub, man, lion and eagle. It is the same 4 living creatures but cherub is substituted for ox in chapter 10.
This is why Satan moved Israel to fashion the golden calf in the wilderness and why he moved Jeroboam to fashion calves for Samaria and Bethel. Satan wanted the idols to look like him in his glory before his fall.
For Dan's leading Israel into such great apostasy and abomination God cuts them off and you will find they go through the tribulation unsealed. There is no mention of the tribe of Dan in the Book of Revelation. All the other tribes are there in chapter 7.
"An adder in the path, that biteth the horse heels, so that his rider shall fall backward." This prophecy may go with the prophecy in Genesis 3 concerning the bruising of the heel of the seed of the woman and the bruising of the head of the seed of the serpent. The picture of the horse rearing and throwing it's rider may have it's roots in Satan's attempts to stop the White Horse Rider of Revelation 19. The white horse rider of Revelation 6 is the seed of the serpent and Satan is in one accord with that rider.
