Genesis 49:28-33 All these are the twelve tribes of Israel: and this is it that their father spake unto them, and blessed them; every one according to his blessing he blessed them. 29 And he charged them, and said unto them, I am to be gathered unto my people: bury me with my fathers in the cave that is in the field of Ephron the Hittite, 30 In the cave that is in the field of Machpelah, which is before Mamre, in the land of Canaan, which Abraham bought with the field of Ephron the Hittite for a possession of a buryingplace. 31 There they buried Abraham and Sarah his wife; there they buried Isaac and Rebekah his wife; and there I buried Leah. 32 The purchase of the field and of the cave that is therein was from the children of Heth. 33 And when Jacob had made an end of commanding his sons, he gathered up his feet into the bed, and yielded up the ghost, and was gathered unto his people.
Jacob has run his race (Heb. 12:1) and finished his course (2 Tim. 4:7) and is now ready to give up the ghost. Knowing his death has arrived he gives final instruction as to his burial wishes. Jacob gives instruction to carry him to the family cemetery and bury him there with Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, Rebekah and Leah. Rachel had to be buried close to Bethlehem where they were when she died giving birth to Benjamin. Jacob was no different than most of us. We want to be buried with family if at all possible.
The scene we see with Jacob's death is a peaceful one. It is a scene that we all should long for. To die un-afraid and knowing that everything is all right is a great solace to all. Jacob, no doubt knew along with all the people of God at that time and since that there would be a resurrection. The oldest recorded words concerning a resurrection are found in the Book of Job. The Book of Job was written probably 400 years before the 5 books of Moses. Job had this to say concerning the resurrection: Job 19:25-27 For I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth: 26 And though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God: 27 Whom I shall see for myself, and mine eyes shall behold, and not another; though my reins be consumed within me.
What a wonderful testimony to the immortality of the child of God. The old saying; "You can't keep a good man down" has application here. Jacob's desire was to be with family when that blessed event happened. Whether it was to be a few years or thousands of years he knew that one day he would be called forth from the grave.
Dear child of God, do you fear death? If you are saved by the precious blood of Jesus Christ then you have nothing to fear. You may the "sting" but death itself should hold no fear for you. Even though we have Hebrews 9:27 which says: "And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:" we who are saved have our judgment for sin taken care of by the cross of Jesus Christ. True we will be judged for our works whether good or bad but we don't have to fear being consigned to hell. (see 1 Cor. 3:25).
Jacob's passing is stated simply. "And when Jacob had made an end of commanding his sons, he gathered up his feet into the bed, and yielded up the ghost, and was gathered unto his people." No fuss, no struggle and no fighting against it. It was as if Jacob in his heart said to God: "Ok Lord. Every thing is done. Take me home."
