I wasn't planning to retire for another 10 years, but a good friend at work stabbed me in the back and went to my boss and turned her against me. It caused me a lot of pain when this happened, and I was very upset with her. I didn't hate her, but I couldn't forgive her. My friend, Cecil... remember him?... told me something very simple--he said love that which you hate and the person who wronged you takes the burden of that hate from you. I actually was able to do that, and I felt such a sense of calm. I was able to thank her to myself for helping me make a life-changing decision. Now I can be in the same room with her and behave pleasantly--without feeling anger toward her.
Forgiveness and reconciliation are so healing.
