CHAPTER 41

Genesis 41:1-14 And it came to pass at the end of two full years, that Pharaoh dreamed: and, behold, he stood by the river. 2 And, behold, there came up out of the river seven well favoured kine and fatfleshed; and they fed in a meadow. 3 And, behold, seven other kine came up after them out of the river, ill favoured and leanfleshed; and stood by the other kine upon the brink of the river. 4 And the ill favoured and leanfleshed kine did eat up the seven well favoured and fat kine. So Pharaoh awoke. 5 And he slept and dreamed the second time: and, behold, seven ears of corn came up upon one stalk, rank and good. 6 And, behold, seven thin ears and blasted with the east wind sprung up after them. 7 And the seven thin ears devoured the seven rank and full ears. And Pharaoh awoke, and, behold, it was a dream. 8 And it came to pass in the morning that his spirit was troubled; and he sent and called for all the magicians of Egypt, and all the wise men thereof: and Pharaoh told them his dream; but there was none that could interpret them unto Pharaoh. 9 Then spake the chief butler unto Pharaoh, saying, I do remember my faults this day 10 Pharaoh was wroth with his servants, and put me in ward in the captain of the guard's house, both me and the chief baker: 11 And we dreamed a dream in one night, I and he; we dreamed each man according to the interpretation of his dream. 12 And there was there with us a young man, an Hebrew, servant to the captain of the guard; and we told him, and he interpreted to us our dreams; to each man according to his dream he did interpret. 13 And it came to pass, as he interpreted to us, so it was; me he restored unto mine office, and him he hanged. 14 Then Pharaoh sent and called Joseph, and they brought him hastily out of the dungeon: and he shaved himself, and changed his raiment, and came in unto Pharaoh.

Two full years have passed since Joseph interpreted the dreams of the baker and butler and the butler has forgotten Joseph and the request Joseph has made to him. God has not forgotten and at the end of the 2 yrs. sets up the circumstances that will get Joseph out of the slammer. He sends two dreams to Pharaoh and the dreams are such that he is greatly troubled by them.. The dreams are such that it seems the evil of tomorrow will eat up the good of today. The dreams were so real to Pharaoh that he knew there must be a meaning to it.

There is much biblical evidence that God spoke to men through dreams in the Old Testament. There are two instances mentioned in Job alone. Job 33:14-17 For God speaketh once, yea twice, yet man perceiveth it not. 15 In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falleth upon men, in slumberings upon the bed; 16 Then he openeth the ears of men, and sealeth their instruction, 17 That he may withdraw man from his purpose, and hide pride from man. Job 4:12-17 Now a thing was secretly brought to me, and mine ear received a little thereof. 13 In thoughts from the visions of the night, when deep sleep falleth on men, 14 Fear came upon me, and trembling, which made all my bones to shake. 15 Then a spirit passed before my face; the hair of my flesh stood up: 16 It stood still, but I could not discern the form thereof: an image was before mine eyes, there was silence, and I heard a voice, saying, 17 Shall mortal man be more just than God? shall a man be more pure than his maker?

Think of the dreams of Daniel where God spoke to him to instruct him of things to come. God appeared to Abraham (Gen. 15:12-17) in dreams and Jacob also (Gen. 28:12, 31:11). Joseph the wife of Mary the mother of Jesus was spoken to in dreams. Ezekiel, Jeremiah and Isaiah were visited by dreams and through these dreams the will of God was revealed to mortal man. It may well be that on occasion God still visits chosen vessels with dreams. If that be the case then you can rest assured that God will reveal the meaning. Why would He waste time on a meaningless vision? It may well be that if you have a dream that troubles you, especially if it is repeated to you, you might well do as Samuel and say; "Speak; for thy servant heareth." (1 Sam. 3:10)
`
As in the other dreams we have looked at in the Book of Genesis the dreams of Pharaoh are prophetic dreams. They are given to Pharaoh for the purpose of elevating Joseph. What good is a dream if you don't know what it means. For Pharaoh, as troubled as he was about his dream, the person who could interpret his dreams would stand in good stature with the king of Egypt.

The call goes out for an interpreter and now the butler has reason to remember Joseph. It is unlikely that the butler had actually forgotten the man who had told him he was to be restored while his companion in prison was taken and hanged according to the interpretation of the dreams. How could you forget something like that. I rather think the butler really didn't care but now that he could be of help to Pharaoh and maybe rise in esteem in Pharaoh's eves, he is ready to remember it all. "Then spake the chief butler unto Pharaoh, saying, I do remember my faults this day ". The butler rehearses his experience in prison and Joseph is swiftly sent for . He cleans up and changes his prison stripes for something more suitable to appear before Pharaoh and steps into the limelight one more time. Joseph has had more ups and downs than a yo-yo but this time he winds up on top and stays there.

Our life here on earth will always be one of ups and downs. Maybe not to the extremes Joseph experienced but to each of us, every time we bottom out, it is a personal crises and every time we hit the top our joy knows no bounds and we feel like nothing can stop us now. Such is the way that is common to man. God's hand was on Joseph all the way but He has given us the same promise of never leaving us nor forsaking us (Heb. 13:5). We should always remember the lessons of Joseph in his captivity. It may have been long and he might not have been able to see tomorrow and it's sunrise but he never gave up on God and God rewarded him greatly.

So very true, my friend. The study of the life of Joseph is very inspiring. Thank you.

Character is built in the fires of affliction. Job is the paramount example of one who grew immensely from the things he suffered. One of my favorite passages in the Bible is Job 23:8-10 Behold, I go forward, but he is not there; and backward, but I cannot perceive him: 9 On the left hand, where he doth work, but I cannot behold him: he hideth himself on the right hand, that I cannot see him: 10 But he knoweth the way that I take: when he hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold.

We may not see God working and may think at times he has deserted us but we as Job can come forth as gold if we will but remain faithful through our tough times.

Almost messed up however. The preacher was to baptize a young girl after the morning service and I was told two weeks ago she was going to be baptized. It takes 3 hours to fill the baptistry and probably 6 hours for the water to warm with the heater on. I forgot yesterday and I guess the Lord reminded me this morning. I awoke around 6:00 a.m. and suddenly it popped in my mind that I had not filled the baptistry.

Needless to say in a panic rush I headed over to the Church and started the water. 2 hours later I turned the heat on and while the baptistry was full it was not warm.

Oh well. One of the deacons and the girls daddy both told me they almost called me yesterday to check on the baptistry but both decieded not to call.

I told both of them it was the Lord telling them to call me and they didn't so it was all their fault. (grin)

Hope your day is pleasant and peaceful in the Lord.

That's a good story. Twenty years ago when I was saved during a visit from one of the deacons in the afternoon after the morning service I decided that I should be baptised at the evening service. The Pastor was not expcting it but went along with it. The water was cold because the heater was turned off between uses. Cold water or not I got dunkd and enjoyed it very much.
