Genesis 41:15-32 And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, I have dreamed a dream, and there is none that can interpret it: and I have heard say of thee, that thou canst understand a dream to interpret it. 16 And Joseph answered Pharaoh, saying, It is not in me: God shall give Pharaoh an answer of peace. 17 And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, In my dream, behold, I stood upon the bank of the river: 18 And, behold, there came up out of the river seven kine, fatfleshed and well favoured; and they fed in a meadow: 19 And, behold, seven other kine came up after them, poor and very ill favoured and leanfleshed, such as I never saw in all the land of Egypt for badness: 20 And the lean and the ill favoured kine did eat up the first seven fat kine: 21 And when they had eaten them up, it could not be known that they had eaten them; but they were still ill favoured, as at the beginning. So I awoke. 22 And I saw in my dream, and, behold, seven ears came up in one stalk, full and good: 23 And, behold, seven ears, withered, thin, and blasted with the east wind, sprung up after them: 24 And the thin ears devoured the seven good ears: and I told this unto the magicians; but there was none that could declare it to me. 25 And Joseph said unto Pharaoh, The dream of Pharaoh is one: God hath shewed Pharaoh what he is about to do. 26 The seven good kine are seven years; and the seven good ears are seven years: the dream is one. 27 And the seven thin and ill favoured kine that came up after them are seven years; and the seven empty ears blasted with the east wind shall be seven years of famine. 28 This is the thing which I have spoken unto Pharaoh: What God is about to do he sheweth unto Pharaoh. 29 Behold, there come seven years of great plenty throughout all the land of Egypt: 30 And there shall arise after them seven years of famine; and all the plenty shall be forgotten in the land of Egypt; and the famine shall consume the land; 31 And the plenty shall not be known in the land by reason of that famine following; for it shall be very grievous. 32 And for that the dream was doubled unto Pharaoh twice; it is because the thing is established by God, and God will shortly bring it to pass.
Joseph is brought before Pharaoh and informed the king had dreams that he needed interpreted. Again Joseph let's it be known that only God can give answer to Pharaoh concerning his dreams. "It is not in me". Compare what Joseph has said with what Daniel told Nebuchadnezzar concerning his dream. Daniel 2:26-28 The king answered and said to Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, Art thou able to make known unto me the dream which I have seen, and the interpretation thereof? 27 Daniel answered in the presence of the king, and said, The secret which the king hath demanded cannot the wise men, the astrologers, the magicians, the soothsayers, shew unto the king; 28 But there is a God in heaven that revealeth secrets, and maketh known to the king Nebuchadnezzar what shall be in the latter days. Thy dream, and the visions of thy head upon thy bed, are these; Joseph and Daniel both had opportunity to enlarge their own selves in the eyes of others but deferred and gave God the credit. The dreams, while different, have both a "near and far" interpretation. Nebuchadnezzar's dream spanned the entire age of the Gentiles all the way to the destruction of the anti-Christ's kingdom by the King of Kings and Lord of Lord's. Pharaoh's dream, while having a short term interpretation that would soon come to pass, I believe it also shows a coming time during the great tribulation where famine will eat up the plenty of earth's storehouses.
The 7 fat kine and 7 lean kine are cattle. Whether they are oxen, water buffalo or another kind of cattle they are cattle which are coming up out of the river. I would assume the river is the Nile and the area is around the fertile lands of Goshen. This is where the Hebrews will settle when Joseph's family is brought into Egypt a few years down the road.
The seven fat ears followed by 7 lean ears and they are said to be blasted by the east wind. Joseph interpretation is both are the same event. 7 good years of plenty followed by 7 years of drought and famine in the land. As we shall see the famine is not limited to Egypt but also reaches into the "Hebrews land" (40:15, 42:1-2).
The "east wind" is indicative of God's judgment. The term east wind shows up for the first time here in verse 6. Notice a few verses: Exodus 10:13 And Moses stretched forth his rod over the land of Egypt, and the LORD brought an east wind upon the land all that day, and all that night; and when it was morning, the east wind brought the locusts. Exodus 14:21 And Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; and the LORD caused the sea to go back by a strong east wind all that night, and made the sea dry land, and the waters were divided. That strong east wind parted the red sea and brought judgment on Pharaoh and his armies as God cut the wind and let the waters return to drown the Egyptian armies. Job 27:20-21 Terrors take hold on him as waters, a tempest stealeth him away in the night. 21 The east wind carrieth him away, and he departeth: and as a storm hurleth him out of his place. Psalm 48:7 Thou breakest the ships of Tarshish with an east wind. Jeremiah 18:17 I will scatter them as with an east wind before the enemy; I will shew them the back, and not the face, in the day of their calamity. Ezekiel 19:12 But she was plucked up in fury, she was cast down to the ground, and the east wind dried up her fruit: her strong rods were broken and withered; the fire consumed them. Hosea 13:15 Though he be fruitful among his brethren, an east wind shall come, the wind of the LORD shall come up from the wilderness, and his spring shall become dry, and his fountain shall be dried up: he shall spoil the treasure of all pleasant vessels.
The kamikaze pilots of the Japanese air corp came out of the east. The word kamikaze means "divine wind". There destruction on the allied forces in the Pacific was so great that there were news blackouts to stop the spread of fear from this seemingly unstoppable onslaught out of the east. When the final battle comes at Armageddon the Euphrates will be dried up so that the way of the kings of the east might be prepared. The armies will be so great in number that the blood will come to the horses bridles in the valley of Meggido (Rev. 16:2 with Rev. 14:2).
The dream is of the coming judgment on Egypt but it has another purpose. God is setting the stage to fulfill his promise and prophecy to Abraham: Genesis 15:13-14 And he said unto Abram, Know of a surety that thy seed shall be a stranger in a land that is not theirs, and shall serve them; and they shall afflict them four hundred years; 14 And also that nation, whom they shall serve, will I judge: and afterward shall they come out with great substance.
That land is Egypt and Joseph is the chosen vessel to bring Israel into the land of Egypt. "And for that the dream was doubled unto Pharaoh twice; it is because the thing is established by God, and God will shortly bring it to pass". And so He does!
To me it is fascinating to see how God worked through weather and men to bring about the conditions that would lead to the fulfilling of His word. Joseph did not realize what role he was playing. Pharaoh did not realize what his part in the history of the Hebrew people was to be. Jacob did not know what was to befall his sons and then him as they all became unwitting players in the game plan God had lain out.
