Genesis 41:46-53 And Joseph was thirty years old when he stood before Pharaoh king of Egypt. And Joseph went out from the presence of Pharaoh, and went throughout all the land of Egypt. 47 And in the seven plenteous years the earth brought forth by handfuls. 48 And he gathered up all the food of the seven years, which were in the land of Egypt, and laid up the food in the cities: the food of the field, which was round about every city, laid he up in the same. 49 And Joseph gathered corn as the sand of the sea, very much, until he left numbering; for it was without number. 50 And unto Joseph were born two sons before the years of famine came, which Asenath the daughter of Potipherah priest of On bare unto him. 51 And Joseph called the name of the firstborn Manasseh: For God, said he, hath made me forget all my toil, and all my father's house 52 And the name of the second called he Ephraim: For God hath caused me to be fruitful in the land of my affliction. 53 And the seven years of plenteousness, that was in the land of Egypt, were ended.
"And Joseph was thirty years old when he stood before Pharaoh--" In this verse we are given the age of Joseph when he started his "ministry" in the land of Egypt as 2nd in command. Here again he fits the type of Jesus. "And Jesus himself began to be about thirty years of age,--" Service in the Temple before God could not start until a man reached the age of thirty (Num. 4:35) so these ages are of significance as they are noted in the Bible. Joseph would have been about 17 when he went into captivity so that would make his ordeal as slave and then prisoner to have lasted about 13 years.
The abundant harvest begins and Joseph begins to lay up 20 per cent (vs. 41:34) of the bounty. This goes on for 7 years according to the dream and the storehouses are full when the abundant years end. During this time Joseph has two sons born unto him by his Egyptian wife Asenath. Again we have a hidden prophecy about Jesus. The bride of Christ is comprised of mostly Gentiles. There are a few Jews certainly but the vast majority are Gentile converts. The Jews rejected Jesus and for the most part still reject their Messiah. While Joseph is away from his people he marries a Gentile. While Jesus is away from Israel he takes from this age a bride. This age is known as the Church age and the Church is His bride. Manasseh and Ephraim are born to Joseph between his age span of 30 and 37.
Now about his two sons Manasseh and Ephraim. Remember that Jacob has 12 sons who are the 12 tribes of Israel. As we will see later Ephraim and Manasseh both are counted as individual tribes among the tribes bringing the count to 14. Here again we are going to see a New Testament equivalent. There were 12 original Apostles. After Judas fell Matthias was chosen by lot to be the 12th Apostle bringing the count to 13. In Acts chapter 9 Saul of Tarsus is chosen directly by Jesus .to become the Apostle to the Gentiles (Romans 11:13) and number 14. I have never figured out this curious relationship nor the reason God chose 14 in total of both the tribes and the Apostles. I know the number 7 is the number signifying completion in the Bible and 14 is that number doubled but beyond that the water gets very murky. One interesting thing is that Dan fell as a tribe when he went into apostasy and idol worship (see Judges 18 for this beginning of idol worship in Israel). The prophecy on Dan is very revealing. Genesis 49:17 Dan shall be a serpent by the way, an adder in the path, that biteth the horse heels, so that his rider shall fall backward. The serpent of course is a reference to Satan and I believe the horse and rider is Jesus. In the New Testament we have a parallel in Judas Iscariot. John 6:70 Jesus answered them, Have not I chosen you twelve, and one of you is a devil? Also Judas is called "the son of perdition" in John 17:12 and the anti-Christ is called the same in 2 Ths. 2:3. Both descriptive terms use the definite article "the" and not the indefinite article "an" in the descriptive phrase. The significance of all this is shrouded in mystery to be revealed in time if God wills it. It will be, however, in His time and to whom He chooses.
