Daniel 11:28-35 Then shall he return into his land with great riches; and his heart shall be against the holy covenant; and he shall do exploits, and return to his own land. 29 At the time appointed he shall return, and come toward the south; but it shall not be as the former, or as the latter. 30 For the ships of Chittim shall come against him: therefore he shall be grieved, and return, and have indignation against the holy covenant: so shall he do; he shall even return, and have intelligence with them that forsake the holy covenant. 31 And arms shall stand on his part, and they shall pollute the sanctuary of strength, and shall take away the daily sacrifice, and they shall place the abomination that maketh desolate. 32 And such as do wickedly against the covenant shall he corrupt by flatteries: but the people that do know their God shall be strong, and do exploits. 33 And they that understand among the people shall instruct many: yet they shall fall by the sword, and by flame, by captivity, and by spoil, many days. 34 Now when they shall fall, they shall be holpen with a little help: but many shall cleave to them with flatteries. 35 And some of them of understanding shall fall, to try them, and to purge, and to make them white, even to the time of the end: because it is yet for a time appointed.
The king of the north has pretty much had his way and returns to his own country with the booty of successful conquest. Not satisfied the king of the north returns to Egypt for further conquest but he is stopped by "the ships of Chittim". Chittim or Old Testament "Kittim". Kittim was a son of Javan a son of Japheth (see Gen. 10:2-5). Javan settled on Cyprus and the isles of the Mediterranean. They are associated with the Greeks. They would correspond to European Gentiles as Japheth was considered the father of the Gentiles as Shem was the father of the orientals with Ham being the father of the Hamitic races of Africa.
Considering the twofold nature of the prophecy; historic and prophetic, we can see interference from Greece in the historical context of stopping or hindering the king of the north. In the prophetic context we can see possibly the European Union, Nato or a combination with the U.S. possibly included as an alliance to stop the future king of the north which I believe is foreshadowing the anti-Christ. If, as it is beginning more and more to look like the anti-Christ is of the Muslim religion it makes sense to see the European people (which would probably include the U.S.) rise up and attempt to stop the evil king.
Here we should also notice the weakening of the U.S. and Europe in these last days. Everything has become so politicized and politically correct that no one can act decisively. Look at what is going on in Libya for example. No one is attacking Libya in a united and determined manner. It is a half hearted campaign at best. This kind of setup is ripe for defeat against any kind of strong united force. As small as Libya is Nato and the U.S. air power has failed to stop Muammar Qaddafi. At best they have only held him at bay for a while. Many wonder where the U.S. fits in the end times and while there is no concrete links in prophecy to the U..S. we can see how far we have fallen in these last few years. This present administration has so weakened our abilities and stature in the world that it is very possible we will be so weak by the time this is fulfilled that we will not play a major roll in these end time wars. It is possible also that we could even ally ourselves with this "beast".
As opposition to his conquest grows we see two major factors at work that is all too familiar in a world with little morals and no allegiance to native countries. "He shall be grieved, and return, and have indignation against the holy covenant". There will be an intensified animosity toward the "chosen people" and the holy covenant between them and God. There will also be an increase in those willing to turn traitor. The king of the north will infiltrate "and have intelligence with them that forsake the holy covenant". There has always been those who would sell out their own people in every age. We have traitors among us today that would gladly destroy America if given the chance. There are many Jews today who would without hesitation sell out Israel to the Palestinians. Even the Jews in our own country side many times with those who would bring about Palestinian statehood in the land of Israel. Our president is working at every chance to weaken and destroy Israel and turn it into a Muslim country.
In verse 31 we see another :"marker" that sets this historical event in the realm of future prophecy. Victory over the people of the holy covenant gives opportunity to add insult to injury. "They shall pollute the sanctuary of strength, and shall take away the daily sacrifice, and they shall place the abomination that maketh desolate." History tells us that this happened with Antiochus Epiphanes and the bringing of a pig sacrifice into the holy temple. There will be a future and final fulfilling of this act with the anti-Christ. 2 Thessalonians 2:3-4 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, (day of the Lord) except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; 4 Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.
In order for this to take place the temple must be rebuilt and it will be. Following the two verses just cited we come to another prophecy matching the words of Paul. Paul said in 2 Thessalonians 2:8-12 "And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming: 9 Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, 10 And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. 11 And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie 12 That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness."
Our text in Daniel says in verse 32; "And such as do wickedly against the covenant shall he corrupt by flatteries:" Oh the power of "tickling ears" (2 Tim. 4:3-4). The anti-Christ will tell them exactly what they want to hear and will convince them the Jews are the problem and exterminating them will solve the worlds ills. God will allow this to happen and will not do anything to convince them otherwise. They have rejected the truth so God will allow them to believe the lie without His Spirit countering the lie.
As so often is the case it takes great persecution to bring faith in God to the surface for the world to see. With all the trouble there will be a few who will stand and die. "But the people that do know their God shall be strong, and do exploits." Even in the great tribulation there will be many who will refuse the mark of the beast (Rev. 13:15-18). They will resist and fight as well as spread the word that this is the beast or anti-Christ. They will have limited success but I believe they will at times have spectacular results. We are told of the fate of so many that stand in the fire of this persecution;. "And they that understand among the people shall instruct many: yet they shall fall by the sword, and by flame, by captivity, and by spoil, many days. " (vs. 33) The word of God will not be stopped even in this very perilous time. This is the time of the 144,000 who are sealed (Rev. 7) and the two witnesses in Jerusalem that are killed (Rev. 11:3-13). The ones who fall will receive help and strength from the Lord. (holpen with a little help vs 34) and among these genuine martyrs will also be found the insincere. It may be they will cling to the faithful just as the mixed multitude who came out of Egypt with Israel. Afraid to stay yet never sincere in their faith toward God.
Verse 35 is an important verse in the understanding of persecutions and why God allows it. Notice what it says: "And some of them of understanding shall fall, to try them, and to purge, and to make them white, even to the time of the end: because it is yet for a time appointed." Three things stand out. It is a time of testing and trial. Pure gold must come from the refiner's furnace. Job said: "when he hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold." Job is a type of Israel during the tribulation period. Secondly it is a time of purging. Purging gets rid of impurities. Under intense persecution many times a person's resolve will be strengthened and faith in God will increase. The more Christians are persecuted the more they are willing to trust God for the outcome. The lesson can be understood by the trial that Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego went through in their trial by fire. They told the king they wouldn't bow nor bend whether God delivered them or not. This tis the resolve God wants to see in His people. Lastly to "whiten them". To completely clean them up. Malachi wrote:
"But who may abide the day of his coming? and who shall stand when he appeareth? for he is like a refiner's fire, and like fullers' soap: And he shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver: and he shall purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer unto the LORD an offering in righteousness." (Malachi 3:2-3) Clean and white linen stands for the righteousness of the saints (Rev. 19:8) Psalm 51:7 Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. Isaiah 1:18 Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool. To be made white then is to be made righteous.
The persecution will last all the way to the end according to verse 35: "Even to the time of the end: because it is yet for a time appointed". Satan will not quit until God stops him. God people will be martyred all the way to the coming of the KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS in Revelation 19. Notice the last of the verse; "it is yet for a time appointed". All is on schedule and according to God's time table. Man thinks he is in control but it is God who will call time and it will be in His time.
