Genesis 29:7-10 And he said, Lo, it is yet high day, neither is it time that the cattle should be gathered together: water ye the sheep, and go and feed them. 8 And they said, We cannot, until all the flocks be gathered together, and till they roll the stone from the well's mouth; then we water the sheep. 9 And while he yet spake with them, Rachel came with her father's sheep: for she kept them. 10 And it came to pass, when Jacob saw Rachel the daughter of Laban his mother's brother, and the sheep of Laban his mother's brother, that Jacob went near, and rolled the stone from the well's mouth, and watered the flock of Laban his mother's brother.

Hidden within this passage is a wonderful resurrection message. Too often we have our attention riveted to the details of the story at hand and don't see the prophetic typology that is revealed in the passage. We could get our eyes on Rachel coming with the sheep or we could focus on the problem as related by the shepherds waiting for the rest of the flocks and cattle. We could focus on the interest that Jacob is displaying at the coming of this beautiful daughter of his uncle. These can all teach us lessons but the real "meat" of the passage is in the well and it's inaccessibility.

In the New Testament water often is a type of the Spirit of God. In John's gospel Chapter 4 verses 4 through 14. Jacob comes to the well at noon (high day vs. 7). Jesus is at the well at noon. The woman thinks that she can give water to Jesus but it is Jesus that can give her the life giving water which is inaccessible to her. This "living water" Jesus makes available to her. In Exodus chapter 2 we find Moses at a well and the daughters of Midian coming to water their father's flock. Shepherd's were there guarding the well. The water was inaccessible to the sheep until Moses drove the shepherds away and made the water accessible.

Thus far we see water that is needed for life that has to be made accessible by Jesus or a type of Jesus. (Moses and Jacob) Now we come to a very important foreshadowing of the work of Jesus in our salvation.

Notice there is a stone on the mouth of the well that Jacob comes to. The sheep cannot be watered until the stone is "rolled away". Are you getting the connection? Remember water in the New Testament is often a type of the Holy Ghost, or Holy Spirit if you prefer. John 16:7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter (Holy Ghost: John 14:26) will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. Jesus, according to this verse, must depart in order for the Holy Ghost, pictured in John 4 as water, to come to His people. These words were spoken before the resurrection as were these all important words here in John 7:38-39 He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. 39 (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.) The Holy Ghost was not given until Jesus was glorified and this did not take place until His resurrection. Another important scripture in understanding exactly when the Holy Spirit of God was given is found in John 20:19-22 Then the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews, came Jesus and stood in the midst, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you. 20 And when he had so said, he shewed unto them his hands and his side. Then were the disciples glad, when they saw the Lord. 21 Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be unto you: as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you. 22 And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost:

The first time the Holy Spirit was received in a new and living way was in an upper room and it was to His disciples. Jesus breathed on them and they received the "living water". At this exact moment they were saved in the New Testament sense. They became "new creatures" (2 Cor. 5:17) in Christ Jesus. These were the first members in the "body of Christ" which we call the Church. This could not happen until Jesus came forth from the tomb. Now getting back to Jacob. You did notice that Jacob rolled the stone away to receive the water, didn't you? You did make the connection to the resurrection of Jesus when the stone was rolled away, didn't you?

I hope you get the picture of the foreshadowing of the work of Jesus in the resurrection. If Jesus had not come forth from the tomb then we would still be in our sins and there would be no salvation as we know it today. 1 Corinthians 15:17 And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins. If Jesus did not come forth from the tomb then the "living water" is inaccessible still! Praise God the stone was rolled away!

Some might wonder why this was necessary. The simple truth is that until the blood of Jesus was carried into the Most Holy Place in heaven the sacrifice was not complete and could not be accepted by the Father. The sacrifice in the Old Testament was not complete until the blood of the sacrificial animal was placed on the horns of the alter in the most holy place in the sanctuary. It was sprinkled on the mercy seat by the high priest and had to be done once every year. This was a picture of the work of Jesus to complete the atonement. His blood had to be placed before God the Father on the mercy seat in heaven to complete the atonement. Notice this truth presented in the Book of John. John 20:16-17 Jesus saith unto her, Mary. She turned herself, and saith unto him, Rabboni; which is to say, Master. 17 Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God. Jesus told Mary that He was going to ascend and for her not to touch Him. This would have defiled Him so He could not permit it. Now look at another event that same day; Matthew 28:6-9 He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay. 7 And go quickly, and tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead; and, behold, he goeth before you into Galilee; there shall ye see him: lo, I have told you. 8 And they departed quickly from the sepulchre with fear and great joy; and did run to bring his disciples word. 9 And as they went to tell his disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying, All hail. And they came and held him by the feet, and worshipped him. He wouldn't let Mary touch Him as He was about to ascend and later that same morning He let the women hold Him by the feet. The difference? Jesus had ascended and entered into the Most Holy Place and sprinkled His blood on the mercy seat.

The stone was rolled away and the living water was now accessible to all who would come and drink.

I saw it as soon as I read the passage!! WooHooooo! There might be hope for me yet, huh?
In years past, I wouldn't have made the connection. Your teaching is taking root, Hillbilly. Praise God! And thank you God for the gift of Dwight as my friend in You.

One of the songs we sang at Mass on Easter Sunday was fitting for this theme:
Sweet Refreshment
Come to the Water
Drink of it freely
Taste the Lord's Spirit
Sweet Refreshment....
ohhhh Water of Life....

is absolutely essential for physical life the Spirit of God is absolutely essential for the union with God that brings us to the eternal afterlife with Him.

Just as water fills whatever vessel that holds it, whether it be a glass, pool sides, pond bank or the sea shores the spirit fills the Christian vessel that belongs to God.

This is why water is used to illustrate the Spirit of God. Air is also used but we shouldn't forget that the air itself contains much water most of the time.

There are so many things like this in the Bible... symbols and hints of things to come. Scripture is chock full of little nuggets waiting to be dug from the shell. Thank you for digging them out for us. 8-)
