Daniel 12:5-13 Then I Daniel looked, and, behold, there stood other two, the one on this side of the bank of the river, and the other on that side of the bank of the river. 6 And one said to the man clothed in linen, which was upon the waters of the river, How long shall it be to the end of these wonders? 7 And I heard the man clothed in linen, which was upon the waters of the river, when he held up his right hand and his left hand unto heaven, and sware by him that liveth for ever that it shall be for a time, times, and an half; and when he shall have accomplished to scatter the power of the holy people, all these things shall be finished. 8 And I heard, but I understood not: then said I, O my Lord, what shall be the end of these things? 9 And he said, Go thy way, Daniel: for the words are closed up and sealed till the time of the end. 10 Many shall be purified, and made white, and tried; but the wicked shall do wickedly: and none of the wicked shall understand; but the wise shall understand. 11 And from the time that the daily sacrifice shall be taken away, and the abomination that maketh desolate set up, there shall be a thousand two hundred and ninety days. 12 Blessed is he that waiteth, and cometh to the thousand three hundred and five and thirty days. 13 But go thou thy way till the end be: for thou shalt rest, and stand in thy lot at the end of the days.
We now come to the conclusion of Daniel's visions. Daniel has been conversing with the Lord of Glory (Dan. 10:5-21) as God has revealed to him the progression of the kingdoms from Nebuchadnezzar to the end of time. The river of verse 5 is Hiddekel (Dan. 10:4. Suddenly two show up with the Lord and they are on the sides of the river while the Lord (the man clothed in linen; vs 6) is standing upon the water in the river. The first time Jesus walked on the water was not found in Matthew 14:25 but in Daniel 12:6. The two with him are not identified but they probably are the two found in Genesis 18:2 with Genesis 19:1. Judgment is being pronounced here and Daniel and judgment was about to fall in Genesis 19.
A question is asked in verse 6: "How long shall it be to the end of these wonders?" At this point we need to determine what is in view that is called "these wonders". In verses 1-3 the context is the "Great Tribulation, the resurrection and judgment. This will be "Daniel's seventieth week" (Dan. 9:27) or "Jacob's trouble" (Jer. 30:7). The cryptic answer given by the man clothed in linen who is standing on the water of the river is: "it shall be for a time, times, and an half; and when he shall have accomplished to scatter the power of the holy people, all these things shall be finished." If the time unit is a year, which would match the prophecies in Revelation and Daniel then we are looking at a 3 1/2 year time span. In Daniel 7:25 it is given as "a time and times and the dividing of time. " In Revelation 11:3 and 12:6 it is given as "a thousand two hundred and threescore days." In Revelation 11:2 and 13:5 it is given as "forty and two months." How ever you add it up it comes out to 3 1/2 years. Three and one half is a special number to God as the length of the ministry of Jesus was 3 1/2 years. It is the length of time the two witnesses in Revelation will prophecy. It is also the lenght of time that the drouth lasted in Elijah's day (James 5:17) and this drouth was a type of tribulation and punishment to Israel.
When clarification is asked for in verse 8 Daniel is told in verse 9 to; "Go thy way, Daniel: for the words are closed up and sealed till the time of the end." Good to His word the words have been and are still sealed. They will not be unsealed until the tribulation period. when Jesus Himself unseals them starting Revelation 6:1. That means that all the prognostication, (including mine) is nothing more than at best educated guessing. Keep this in mind when ever you hear or read commentary on the events in Daniel. Who in there right mind 40 years ago foresaw the extent of the rise of the Islamic religion which more and more appears to be the worship of a "god whom his fathers knew not" Dan.11:38). Just as this was not foreseen a few years back we may again see a change that will make us alter our thinking again. Who knows but God?.
The "meat" of the chapter is really in the closing verses. "Many shall be purified, and made white, and tried; but the wicked shall do wickedly: and none of the wicked shall understand; but the wise shall understand. " (vs. 10) " But go thou thy way till the end be: for thou shalt rest, and stand in thy lot at the end of the days." Regardless of what happens there will be an end to all this as we know it. At the time we stand in "our lot" to be judged it is not going to matter how much wealth we gained nor how famous we were. God is not going to care about the things we thought were so important. All that will matter at that time is what have we done with Jesus. Daniel met the pre-incarnate Jesus and worshipped Him. He did not know Him as Jesus but he knew Him as the God he worshipped and adored.
The wicked of the world does not understand what the Christ loving and adoring Christian knows. He can never understand unless he converts and is saved. The Muslim thinks he knows as do all the Christ rejecting religionists of the world. The atheist is in the same boat and it is sinking. He is going to be greatly shocked when he stands in his lot before a just and righteous God who will condemn his filthy soul to an everlasting burning lake of fire from which he will never escape.
We as Christians are now troubled at the things that are coming on the earth. Things that Daniel wrote about so long ago. We as Daniel have a great desire to look into the future and see these things with great detail. It is not God's wish that we do so but we are to "see through this glass darkly" (1 Cor. 13:12) but the day will come when we shall understand and know even as we are known. Jesus has promised us that brighter day and I look forward to it. Our day is coming. Matthew 13:43 Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Who hath ears to hear, let him hear.
When the events of the great tribulation are unveiled there are two time periods given that can only be discerned by those living during that time These two time elements are a precise countdown to the darkest time known to man and then the light at the end of the tunnel. Verse 11 gives this time as: "From the time that the daily sacrifice shall be taken away, and the abomination that maketh desolate set up, there shall be a thousand two hundred and ninety days." This 1,290 days is one month longer than the 1,260 days of the great tribulation. I am going to guess, (and it can only be a guess) that this is a reference to the time span from the halting of the daily sacrifice (to be re-instituted during the very last days, which means the temple must be re-built) until the anti-Christ claims that he is God fulfilling of 2 Thessalonians 2:3-4 which says: "Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; 4 Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God." The second prophesied time element is found in verse 12 which says: "Blessed is he that waiteth, and cometh to the thousand three hundred and five and thirty days." My thinking is that 1 1/2 months after the "abomination that maketh desolate" is set up it will all be over. The advent will have taken place and the enemies of God will have been destroyed. There will be joy and jubilation on the earth for the remnant that has suffered so much.
Millions like Daniel are awaiting for the call from The One who has power to resurrect the body to join the soul. We don't know the exact time that God has put in His own power but we do know that it is coming. My prayer is that all who read this have been made ready by the blood of the Lamb.
Daniel is a powerful and mysterious book given by God to His people to let them know of things to come. While I don't believe anyone as yet has perfect knowledge of this book we can get a fairly accurate glimpse of the future by looking into the past as God had Daniel record all that He showed Him.
May we all as Daniel be ready to greet with joy our God and King when He comes for us.
