CHAPTER 26
Genesis 26:1-6 And there was a famine in the land, beside the first famine that was in the days of Abraham. And Isaac went unto Abimelech king of the Philistines unto Gerar. 2 And the LORD appeared unto him, and said, Go not down into Egypt; dwell in the land which I shall tell thee of: 3 Sojourn in this land, and I will be with thee, and will bless thee; for unto thee, and unto thy seed, I will give all these countries, and I will perform the oath which I sware unto Abraham thy father; 4 And I will make thy seed to multiply as the stars of heaven, and will give unto thy seed all these countries; and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; 5 Because that Abraham obeyed my voice, and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws. 6 And Isaac dwelt in Gerar:
The passage is salient in understanding God's refusal to do away with the Jewish people and Israel.
A famine arises in the land as it did in the time of Abraham. Abraham went to Egypt and there passed his wife off as his sister in fear of his life. Abraham went to Egypt for help and sustenance in a time of famine. Now it is his son Isaac's turn. In the midst of this famine Isaac set his face southward to get relief for his family and livestock. The nomadic herdsmen always depended on rain and grazing land for their herds to feed on. Isaac goes first to Abimelech, king of the Philistines who dwells in Gerar. Gerar is south of Gaza and is close to Egypt. Isaac's intention is evidently to go on southward to Egypt and possibly Goshen in the area where the Nile emptied into the Mediterranean sea. The reason this is evident is that God appears to him and tells him emphatically not to go to Egypt but stay in the land he is in. God's words are "Sojourn in this land and I will be with thee". "This land" is part of the covenant promise to Abraham and as Abraham's son and only heir the land is part of Isaac's inheritance.
What follows in God's words to Isaac is what the entire world needs to grasp. "for unto thee, and unto thy seed, I will give all these countries, and I will perform the oath which I sware unto Abraham thy father; And I will make thy seed to multiply as the stars of heaven, and will give unto thy seed all these countries; and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; Because that Abraham obeyed my voice, and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws."
First, notice the inheritance passes to Isaac and then on to his seed. "For unto thee, and unto thy seed, I will give all these countries". Abraham is dead and now Isaac is brought into the covenant. "I will perform the oath which I sware unto Abraham thy father;" Going back up to verse 3 it would appear the covenant is dependent on Isaac sojourning in the land but further reading shows this is not the case. "And I will make thy seed to multiply as the stars of heaven, (see Genesis 15:5) and will give unto thy seed all these countries; and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; Because that Abraham obeyed my voice, and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws."
Not because of anything Isaac had done nor would do was it conditioned. It was not conditioned on Isaac's obedience but on his father Abraham's obedience. The original promise was to Abraham and his seed. Isaac was the first in a long line of the seed of Abraham. The promise was that his seed would be as the dust of the earth (Gen. 13:16 also as the sand on the sea shore in Gen. 22:17) and as the stars in heaven for number. (Gen.15:5)
Though the world looks at Israel as trespassers the only trespassers are those who are there without Israel's permission. God gave the land to Israel as Abraham's seed. Though the Helen Thomases of this world would try to send Israel back in the "diaspora" Israel's true home is in the land God told Isaac not to leave.
As we witness transgression after transgression against Israel we can rest assured that when the dust settles Israel will be firmly and peacefully established in the land God gave to Abraham and the nations of the world will be visiting Jerusalem once a year to do worship to the King of Kings and Lord of Lords.
Zechariah 14:16-21 And it shall come to pass, that every one that is left of all the nations which came against Jerusalem shall even go up from year to year to worship the King, the LORD of hosts, and to keep the feast of tabernacles. 17 And it shall be, that whoso will not come up of all the families of the earth unto Jerusalem to worship the King, the LORD of hosts, even upon them shall be no rain. 18 And if the family of Egypt go not up, and come not, that have no rain; there shall be the plague, wherewith the LORD will smite the heathen that come not up to keep the feast of tabernacles. 19 This shall be the punishment of Egypt, and the punishment of all nations that come not up to keep the feast of tabernacles. 20 In that day shall there be upon the bells of the horses, HOLINESS UNTO THE LORD; and the pots in the LORD'S house shall be like the bowls before the altar. 21 Yea, every pot in Jerusalem and in Judah shall be holiness unto the LORD of hosts: and all they that sacrifice shall come and take of them, and seethe therein: and in that day there shall be no more the Canaanite in the house of the LORD of hosts.
In that day all the world will bow to the "King of the Jews". They may not like it but how long will they hold out in a dry and thirsty land wherein is no rain because of their obstinance. One day the capitol of the entire world will be in Jerusalem, The City of God!
