Genesis 27:14-25 And he went, and fetched, and brought them to his mother: and his mother made savoury meat, such as his father loved. 15 And Rebekah took goodly raiment of her eldest son Esau, which were with her in the house, and put them upon Jacob her younger son: 16 And she put the skins of the kids of the goats upon his hands, and upon the smooth of his neck: 17 And she gave the savoury meat and the bread, which she had prepared, into the hand of her son Jacob. 18 And he came unto his father, and said, My father: and he said, Here am I; who art thou, my son? 19 And Jacob said unto his father, I am Esau thy firstborn; I have done according as thou badest me: arise, I pray thee, sit and eat of my venison, that thy soul may bless me. 20 And Isaac said unto his son, How is it that thou hast found it so quickly, my son? And he said, Because the LORD thy God brought it to me. 21 And Isaac said unto Jacob, Come near, I pray thee, that I may feel thee, my son, whether thou be my very son Esau or not. 22 And Jacob went near unto Isaac his father; and he felt him, and said, The voice is Jacob's voice, but the hands are the hands of Esau. 23 And he discerned him not, because his hands were hairy, as his brother Esau's hands: so he blessed him. 24 And he said, Art thou my very son Esau? And he said, I am. 25 And he said, Bring it near to me, and I will eat of my son's venison, that my soul may bless thee. And he brought it near to him, and he did eat: and he brought him wine, and he drank.
Rebekah had commanded Jacob to take two kids of the goats to be killed and prepared as the venison that Isaac loved so well and he obeyed. Thus was set in motion the plan that would lead to a separation that would last for the rest of Rebekah's life. To complete the deception she took the skins of the two young goats and made coverings for Jacob's arms and neck where Isaac would feel and sent him to Isaac. She also took Esau's clothes and had Jacob dress in them. They evidently were hunting clothes as they had the smell of the fields according to verse 27.
At the sound of Jacob's voice Isaac at first became suspicions. "How did you take the venison so quickly?" "Who are you? You sound like Jacob." Lies beget lies and once started there is seemingly no end. "How did you find the deer so quickly?" "The LORD thy God brought it to me." Not my God nor our God but "thy God". Could it be Jacob was not a true follower of God at this time?
Upon the smell of the raiment and the feel of the skins on this impostor Isaac relaxed and let down his guard. Jacob evidently played the role of Esau very well as Isaac was sufficiently fooled to accept Jacob as his oldest son Esau. Upon eating and drinking of this savory meal the die was cast and all that remained was to hear the blessing.
There is a lesson in this for all of us. While it was God's intent to give to Jacob the blessing and the birthright Jacob entered into a lie that was not pleasing to God. Along with God having to be displeased with Jacob and Rebekah he also must have been displeased with Isaac for ignoring the words of God from the beginning that told Rebekah that Esau was to serve Jacob which was a clear indication of God's choice of Jacob over Esau.
Every aspect of this deception is a foreshadowing of how people today will follow that which is false. It foreshadows the coming false Christ. Matthew 24:24 For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect. Jacob had all the characteristics of his brother except one to Isaac who was blind at this time in his life. Although his first instinct was to suspect Jacob he let Jacob convince him that he was his brother. Isaac should have pressed this doubt to be fully persuaded.
Paul wrote about the coming false Christ and his workers in 2 Corinthians 11:13-15 For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. 14 And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. 15 Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works. Jacob transformed himself into someone who he was not. He convinced his father he was someone he was not. He received by deception what under normal circumstances would have gone to someone else. The anti-Christ will do the same.
In the tribulation there will be a great deception which will fool the world. The very son of Satan will appear as the Son of God. He will take the kingdom by deception although it will be a very short reign as Jesus will come and destroy him and his kingdom and set up and everlasting kingdom of righteousness.
Sometimes we miss these little pictures tucked neatly away in the story of peoples lives but the lesson is there. Always check everything against the word of God. We know the evil spirits will try to draw us away from the true path of Jesus Christ. They will entice us with things that sound sane, reasonable and even biblical. You can always check the spirits out by heeding the Bible.
1 John 4:2-3 Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God: 3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world. How does that "minister of righteousness handle Jesus Christ and salvation. The name Jesus Christ means "Anointed Saviour". The scriptures are clear that this Anointed Saviour is none other than the very God of Heaven manifest in the flesh. 1 Timothy 3:16 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory. John 1:1,14 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
Had Isaac followed his first instincts as to the words he heard from the voice of Jacob the deception would have failed. If we will heed to God's Word and believe it then Satan's deception cannot fool us.
Jeremiah 17:9-10 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? 10 I the LORD search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings. Jacob was about to learn this lesson in full. There would be a bittersweet victory in his deceitful actions that would haunt him all the way to his grave.
