In the last post we looked at the 70 weeks of years or 490 year period from Abraham receiving the promise until the Exodus. This was the first "Jubile" period in the Bible. We will now look at the next time period which marks another "Jubile" period or 70 X 7 years. This period spans the time from the Exodus until the building of Solomon's Temple. The following year after the completion the Temple was dedicated. It was dedicated at the time of the Feast of Tabernacles. An interesting thing about this is that the dedication was actually held during a jubile year. The actual time span from the Exodus to the dedication was 591 years according to Clarence Larkin in his work "Dispensational Truth.
To work out the time period we may go to Acts 13:17-22 The God of this people of Israel chose our fathers, and exalted the people when they dwelt as strangers in the land of Egypt, and with an high arm brought he them out of it. 18 And about the time of forty years suffered he their manners in the wilderness. 19 And when he had destroyed seven nations in the land of Chanaan, he divided their land to them by lot. 20 And after that he gave unto them judges about the space of four hundred and fifty years, until Samuel the prophet. 21 And afterward they desired a king: and God gave unto them Saul the son of Cis, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, by the space of forty years. 22 And when he had removed him, he raised up unto them David to be their king; to whom also he gave testimony, and said, I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after mine own heart, which shall fulfil all my will. David also reigned for 40 years. (2 Sam. 5:4) 1 Kings 6:1 And it came to pass in the four hundred and eightieth year after the children of Israel were come out of the land of Egypt, in the fourth year of Solomon's reign over Israel, in the month Zif, which is the second month, that he began to build the house of the LORD. (Solomon begins building the Temple 480 years after the Exodus begins. If the foundation was laid in the 4th year then the preparatory work must have started soon after he was crowned. All the blocks were pre-cut and moved to the site requiring a considerable time element) 1 Kings 6:37-38 In the fourth year was the foundation of the house of the LORD laid, in the month Zif: 38 And in the eleventh year, in the month Bul, which is the eighth month, was the house finished throughout all the parts thereof, and according to all the fashion of it. So was he seven years in building it.
The chronology in Acts adds up to approximately 570 years through David's reign which was for 40 years. The passages in 1 Kings 6 1 and and 6:37-38 show the foundation of the temple being laid 4 years after the ascension of Solomon to the throne with seven years to completion. The dedication was the following year. According to historical accounts the temple lay unused for one year until the dedication and this was probably due to the fact that at the Feast of Tabernacles that year started another jubile year. We can then account for 482 years positive of this time period. Going back to the passage above in Acts we see the word "about" used twice in the chronology. This shows us the time given was approximate. Clarence Larkin gives the total time as 591 years from Exodus to the dedication. The Jewish historian Flavius Josephus lists it as 592 years.
Taking this obviously greater time span than the 490 years we are looking for we must try to reconcile why there is such a disparity of agreement as to the time we are looking for. There is a difference shown of 111 to 112 years from the 490 yrs we are looking for by the reckoning of Larkin and Josephus. .In the passage in Acts we looked at we find mentioned the approximate 450 years of the judges. Close examination of that time period as listed in the Book of Judges reveals the appropriate facts we are looking for. Remember in the last study we saw that God did not reckon the time that Ishmael stood in the way of the royal line to the "Prince". In Judges 3:8 we find recorded: " Therefore the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of Chushanrishathaim king of Mesopotamia: and the children of Israel served Chushanrishathaim eight years." In Judges 3:12-14 we find again: "And the children of Israel did evil again in the sight of the LORD: and the LORD strengthened Eglon the king of Moab against Israel, because they had done evil in the sight of the LORD. 13 And he gathered unto him the children of Ammon and Amalek, and went and smote Israel, and possessed the city of palm trees. 14 So the children of Israel served Eglon the king of Moab eighteen years." Again in Judges 4:2-3 we read: "And the LORD sold them into the hand of Jabin king of Canaan, that reigned in Hazor; the captain of whose host was Sisera, which dwelt in Harosheth of the Gentiles. 3 And the children of Israel cried unto the LORD: for he had nine hundred chariots of iron; and twenty years he mightily oppressed the children of Israel." In addition we read in Judges 6:1 "And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD: and the LORD delivered them into the hand of Midian seven years." In Judges 10:7-8 we see again: "And the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel, and he sold them into the hands of the Philistines, and into the hands of the children of Ammon. 8 And that year they vexed and oppressed the children of Israel: eighteen years, all the children of Israel that were on the other side Jordan in the land of the Amorites, which is in Gilead." Finally in Judges 13:1 we find one more time God delivered Israel into the hand of her enemies as servitudes to punish them. "And the children of Israel did evil again in the sight of the LORD; and the LORD delivered them into the hand of the Philistines forty years."
Six time God punished Israel and gave them into the hands of their enemies. Adding up the years of these six "servitudes" we see: 8 + 18 + 20 + 7 + 18 + 40 = 111 years. Subtract this from Larkin's figure of 591 years and you have the 490 years or "70 weeks of years" we are looking for. Taking the 492 of Josephus and we are only one year off. This can easily be explained by the "abouts" we find in the chronology. We see then a pattern has emerged that in reckoning time in the Bible God does not count time when Israel is not in favor with God. This explains why there is so much confusion in trying to figure out dates and years in the Bible. God must reveal these things to his diligent servants or they will never be brought to light.
What has all this to do with our study in Daniel? Simply this. The 70 weeks of Daniel in Daniel 9, where we are studying, is broken up in separate time elements. Sixty nine of those weeks were fulfilled up to the crucifixion. Israel is in a time of punishment and dispersion up until now. There is a span of nearly 2,000 years between the 69th and 70th week of Daniels vision which he wrote down for us to understand. One of the most important aspects for us to derive from this is that all the events in the prophecies concerning the last days are not in the past. Those who teach the Book of Daniel and the Book of Revelation are events of the past have missed totally the suspending of time by God when Israel is in a state of punishment.
In the next study we will look at the final "70 X 7" year period appropriate to the understanding of the suspension of time with God when Israel is out of favor with Him.
