26 And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined. 27 And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.
Immediately after the 69th week Messiah was cut off. He was whipped, scourged, mocked, humiliated and desecrated. He was spat upon and the hairs of his beard were plucked out. A cruel crown of thorns was pressed down hard upon his brow and then he was taken to the place of the skull and nailed to a tree to die a horrible death. He was "cut off, but not for Himself". Notice now the destruction of the city and sanctuary which took place in 70 A.D. with the Roman armies invading Jerusalem. If it weren't for the prophecies at the beginning of this passage we have been looking at we might think all this complete passage had been fulfilled with the destruction in 70 A.D.
A couple of problems stand in the way though. As we look back again at verse 24 we see not all could have been fulfilled.: 24 Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people (69 fulfilled up to the entering of Jesus into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday) and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, (which transgression? The anti-Christ is to come to the temple in Jerusalem and claim to be God 2 Ths. 2:3-4) and to make an end of sins, (sin continues and abounds) and to make reconciliation for iniquity, (Jesus did that on Calvary) and to bring in everlasting righteousness, (this was accomplished in a limited sense in the born again believer. The inner man has imputed righteousness but the outward man is still corrupt) and to seal up the vision and prophecy, (if the vision and prophecy continue through the full seventy weeks then it is not a done deal) and to anoint the most Holy. (If this has to do with the crowning as King of Kings and Lord of Lords it is still future.)
This question as to fulfillment of the entire prophecy is why I spent the time to show how there have been 4 periods of "70" weeks and each had a gap in it showing that God stops His clock when Israel is not in favor and in the promised land. Between the 69th and 70th week in Daniel's vision is hidden the Church age. This is the gap between the crucifixion and the conquering King. It runs in the neighborhood of 2000 years. In each of the 3 previous time spans we see them ending with a type of jubile. Freedom and tabernacling with God. This 4th will be no different. The King on His throne is at the end of this prophetic 70 week period.
Looking now at the last of the prophecy we see future fulfillment: "--and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, (Rev. 12:15-16) and unto the end of the war desolations are determined. 27 And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate."
This man is called a "prince". Jesus is called the prince of peace. This man will bring a false peace and "by peace shall destroy many" (Dan. 8:25) He is called a prince here in verse 26 but in 8:23 he is called "a king of fierce countenance, and understanding dark sentences". In verse 27 we are given to understand that a covenant is in place which shall be broken in "the midst of the week". This covenant may well be the covenant God gave to Abraham concerning the land of Palestine belonging to the Jews. Consider the effect if a man who was an extremely powerful leader admitted the land belonged to Israel and then signs a peace treaty! If these events depicted are still future as I believe then we can only guess at who the people o f the prince are. My inclination is to believe they are Muslim hordes. This people and resultant religion can be traced all the way back to Gen. 16:12.
The phrase "the midst of the week" definitely puts us back on solid ground as to this being the final week of the 70 week prophecy. This means this final time is 7 years long and at the 3 1/2 year mark this "prince" breaks his word concerning the covenant and causes the sacrifice to cease. This will be when he proclaims himself to be God from the mercy seat in the temple. It will be at this time that the wrath of God will be poured out for the next 3 1/2 years to it's fullest extent on the hapless people of the world who have rejected Him and desecrated all that is holy.
This time will be marked by the two witnesses who show up in Jerusalem in the Book of Revelation. The beginning of their ministry will probably mark the beginning of the 70th week of Daniel and their assassination after 1260 days which equals 42 months which equals 3 1/2 years will most likely mark the midpoint of the week. This may not be exactly precise because each day is 1 year long and the time could correspond with the morning or evening instead of "high noon". There are 12 months in a year and 24 hours in day. Each hour of the prophetic day then would be 15 hours long so we can see how it would be difficult to nail it down to the exact time in the middle of the 70th week.
However exactly the events play out as we see them today we can still marvel at this prophecy that is given to Daniel. The first 69 weeks came to fulfillment exactly as God said they would and the last week will also come to pass precisely as God stated. To pick up the prophecy in greater detail all one has to do is go to the Book of Revelation and study the events as they unfold. Daniel saw the timetable and John saw the detailed events unfolded within Daniel's time frame.
This concludes Daniel chapter 9 and in chapter 10 we will be introduced to a remarkable visitor to Daniel whom by his description would seem to be none other than the pre-incarnate Christ.
