Daniel 6:6-10 Then these presidents and princes assembled together to the king, and said thus unto him, King Darius, live for ever. 7 All the presidents of the kingdom, the governors, and the princes, the counsellors, and the captains, have consulted together to establish a royal statute, and to make a firm decree, that whosoever shall ask a petition of any God or man for thirty days, save of thee, O king, he shall be cast into the den of lions. 8 Now, O king, establish the decree, and sign the writing, that it be not changed, according to the law of the Medes and Persians, which altereth not. 9 Wherefore king Darius signed the writing and the decree. 10 Now when Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went into his house; and his windows being open in his chamber toward Jerusalem, he kneeled upon his knees three times a day, and prayed, and gave thanks before his God, as he did aforetime.

Envy can be a terrible thing. It eats at you from the inside and consumes your being. The presidents and princes can't stand having to play second fiddle to a "Jew boy". In their jealousy and hatred for Daniel they get their heads together to figure out how to bring him down. They knew that Daniel was righteous in his actions and utterly faithful to king Darius. Deep down they probably admitted to themselves that Daniel was more deserving of the honor than they. Through it all it may be truthfully said that man as a whole never changes. This hatred for this Jew from the Persians is still a burning fire today. All one has to do is look at modern Iran and it's attitude toward the Jews and you can see how 2,500 years ago the Jew haters would stop and nothing nor hesitate to stoop as low as necessary to bring the Jew down.

Through their deliberations it was decided that nothing would stop Daniel from praying to his God. Through the open windows of Daniels home they had observed him daily as he faithfully knelt before his God with his head facing toward the city of his nativity. The plan was to get Darius to sign into law a decree that essentially made him a god in the eyes of his people. They played on the kings vanity and ego in order to get him to sign a decree making it unlawful to pray to any god or make petition to anyone other than king Darius himself. Darius more than likely swelled with pride that his presidents and princes would think that highly of him. Their actions were telling him that they put as much faith in him as they would any of the many gods they bowed before. Darius was so taken in that he did not stop and consider the ramification of such a decree. His beloved Daniel never entered into his mind as he signed the decree.

In this passage we can also see the quiet faith of Daniel. Daniel knew what the other presidents and the princes were up to and probably knew it was aimed at him. Not once did he go before the king to object. He did not make a sign and march back and forth in front of the palace in protest of this unjust action. He never went in before the king to apprise him of what this would mean to him. Daniel knew that once signed there was no power on earth that could alter the decree. The law was the law and not even the king had power to change the written law. For thirty days the decree had to be allowed to run it's course.

In this decree we find an allegory and parallel into the law of God. When God decrees something and puts it in writing it cannot be altered. God said the wages of sin is death. That decree cannot be altered. It was written down and we have it to read! God decreed that the wages of sin was death to the body but He also decreed that the soul could live if there was a blood atonement made for that soul. He had it written down and preserved for us so we could know there was a decree made by Him to allow for the atonement of the soul. God decreed that since man sinned it must be man that paid for that sin through death. There is no other way for atonement than through shed blood and death. Praise God even though he has decreed these things He also decreed that he would be satisfied if one perfect man was willing to pay for the sins of all mankind. There was a man found and His name was Jesus. He was and is the only begotten Son of God.

Daniel knew the decree but was willing to be eaten by the lions rather than betray his God. Jesus knew his mission when He took on flesh and came into the world. He was willing to die that awful death and he did not try to change the decree of His Father. When Daniel knew the decree was signed he did not shut his windows to pray. He did not go into and inner room so as not to be seen. "He kneeled upon his knees three times a day, and prayed, and gave thanks before his God, as he did aforetime" Daniel had always prayed in that manner and he would continue to pray in that manner. He did not change one thing to save his life. Jesus did nothing to prevent His death on the cross.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if we had that kind of faith and inner strength. If something like this was to be done to us would we change anything? Would we need to change anything? Are we close enough to God that we would be willing to be eaten by the lions or as in the case of his three friends, thrown into a furnace of fire for our faith? Daniel was willing to go through it all for his Father in Heaven. Jesus was willing to go all the way to please His Father in Heaven.

"Talking the talk" is relatively easy. Can we truthfully say we are willing to "walk the walk" no matter what may be the consequence?

follow the Lord, but many times we fail that test. Even his own disciples let him down after being selected by him to follow him. Truth be told, very few of us would die for our faith if we could find some way out of it--some sort of compromise.
