CHAPTER 6

Daniel 6:1-5 It pleased Darius to set over the kingdom an hundred and twenty princes, which should be over the whole kingdom; 2 And over these three presidents; of whom Daniel was first: that the princes might give accounts unto them, and the king should have no damage. 3 Then this Daniel was preferred above the presidents and princes, because an excellent spirit was in him; and the king thought to set him over the whole realm. 4 Then the presidents and princes sought to find occasion against Daniel concerning the kingdom; but they could find none occasion nor fault; forasmuch as he was faithful, neither was there any error or fault found in him. 5 Then said these men, We shall not find any occasion against this Daniel, except we find it against him concerning the law of his God.

It has been an amazing and long journey for Daniel. He was taken captive as a young man, possibly as a teenager and now he is an old man probably in his eighties. Nebuchadnezzar arose to power around 606 B.C. and Babylon fell in or around 538 B.C. The 70 yrs. of captivity are almost expired and the stage is set for the return of the captives to Jerusalem.

We are not told how long Daniel was under the authority of Darius when Daniel was given the second place of authority in the kingdom of the Medes. Daniel's standing in Babylon would have been made known to Darius. Given the fact that Daniel was the third ruler in the kingdom of Babylon when it fell it is highly possible that Daniel handled the surrender terms. We should remember that Belshazzar had been slain and Daniel was made the third ruler in the kingdom on the night Belshazzar was slain. All the people of high position were in the palace at the feast and Daniel had been set over them so it would fall to him as having the highest rank to surrender the city. Daniel's reputation would have been known so it is easy to see how he gained favor with Darius.

Chapter 6 is an interesting chapter in that there is a great deal that foreshadowed details of Jesus and His life. The first attribute is an "excellent spirit" (vs. 3) Just as the excellent spirit in Daniel was the Spirit of God we find the same Spirit in Jesus. It came on Him at His baptism and was His guide throughout His ministry. Every Christian has this same Spirit at his or her call. By this I simply mean He is there to guide, bring peace and instruct in the Word of God. If we will depend on the Spirit of God to guide us in our every minutia of life we cannot go wrong. If we were to consider two people with the exact same attributes and abilities they would have equal results in their efforts. If we add the Spirit of God to one and not the other then we have a situation where the one with the Spirit of God excelling above the other. This ought to hold true in every believer. In your job you should excel over your equals (providing all aspects are truly equal) every time. Given the same brain capacity and education the Christian should excel. Given the same strength and size the Christian ball player ought to excel every time. No matter what your station in life, if you are a Christian, you should excel over a lost person every time.

Daniel excelled over every opponent every time because of the excellent spirit that was in him. God guided and Daniel depended. That is the perfect mix. You follow God and you will excel. Not only will you excel but people will notice something different about you. In some it will bring envy, jealousy and the desire to bring you down. In others it will bring admiration and they will want to avail themselves to your excellent spirit. Daniel could not have prospered the way he did if God had not been with him. We will never prosper without God. We cannot do it on our own and we cannot overcome all the adversaries in life if we do not depend on God. This was a lesson that Daniel knew. His three Hebrew companions also knew it and depended on the same Spirit.

Just as Daniel's adversaries tried to find fault in him when there was none the same was true with Jesus. Jesus was perfect in every aspect of his life and Daniel walked perfectly before the kings and rulers who had authority over him. Even when Daniel was sorely tried God delivered again and again and he always gave credit to God. He never bowed to pride. He never let his successes, which he knew to come from God, elevate his ego or cause him to think higher of himself than he ought to think. Daniel was a humble man and Jesus was a humble man.

Verse 5 contains the "meat" in this passage. Since they could not find fault in Daniel in the way he conducted himself they must look to what he believed to bring his downfall. Daniel's adversaries held to a host of gods and Daniel prayed to the one true God who had displayed His power and authority in Daniel's life. They must devise a way to bring him down through his faith in his God.

In the life of Jesus it was the same. The Jews held to a legalistic and rigid law that governed every life in the religious realm and the secular realm. Herein they tried time and again to entrap Jesus but the "excellent Spirit" in Jesus defeated the foes every time. They tried to get him for breaking the sabbath. The tried to get him for claiming to forgive sins. They fumed at him because of His wisdom in making fools of them before the people when they tried to trick Him. When they brought the woman caught in adultery to Him in order to force Him to uphold the law of Moses He simply told them to go ahead and stone her but the first one to cast a stone at her was to be the one who had no sin. The were sin laden and knew it. They had brought the woman caught in the very act but had let the man go free.

Just as Daniel's enemies would pay the ultimate price for their dishonest treachery the ones who unjustly condemned Jesus are paying for their treachery unto this very day. A day for them that will never end.

Daniel is also one of my favorite books of the Bible.

It not only has the most detailed prophesies of the Bible but it also is very revealing as to human nature and character.

All of us can weigh or measure our own faith and service against the lives of the players in the Book of Daniel. Each person mentioned has characteristics we might try to emulate or shun but as we read we usually weigh ourselves by what they did in their respective circumstances.

May we all ever stand true to our Saviour no matter what the circumstances we find ourselves in.

While reading this I went back over certain periods in my life...when things appeared to be going well and when they weren't. Very enlightening. I love the Book of Daniel and you are bringing so much more depth to it and making it more meaningful to me. Thank you.
