In reply to: Hillbilly 's message, "The Resurrections Post #5" on 18:31:31 02/08/10 Mon

First, I want to say that I am enjoying this series. I have to read them very slowly because they are full of good stuff, but I got behind. Just had a very busy month and will have a busy couple of weeks coming up, so wanted to at least catch up on this series this morning. My question: The "crowns" of gold the 24 elders were wearing--would they be the same as halos like we see depicted in paintings?

The crowns will be as you would normally think of a crown. If you notice in Revelation 4:10 you will see the 24 elders cast the crowns at the feet of Jesus. A halo or aura could not be taken off.

They knew that He and He alone was worthy of any "badge" of honor. It was only by the grace of God they were before the throne.

The halo or aura depicted is taken from the account of Moses coming down from the Mount Sinai after receiving the commandments. His face shone with a brightness after being in the presence of God. You can read about it in Exodus 34:29-35. It was evidently quite bright. In 2 Cor. 3:7 Paul mentions that the people of Israel could not look at him because of the glory (brightness). Stephen may have had the same glory conveyed to him as he was before the council because the scriptures state his face was as the face of an angel. (Acts 6:15)

In Matthew 17:2 when Jesus was transfigured His face shone as sun and His clothes became white as the light. This is a foreshadowing of the resurrection body and I assume we will be like that when we receive our glorified bodies.

That explains it very well... the halo depicted in religious paintings is more the aura of light that radiates from those highly blessed?

who have been in the presence of God. Stephen might not have actually been in His presence but heaven opened to Him and He saw Jesus standing on the right hand of the Father.
