Daniel 5:7-12 The king cried aloud to bring in the astrologers, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers. And the king spake, and said to the wise men of Babylon, Whosoever shall read this writing, and shew me the interpretation thereof, shall be clothed with scarlet, and have a chain of gold about his neck, and shall be the third ruler in the kingdom. 8 Then came in all the king's wise men: but they could not read the writing, nor make known to the king the interpretation thereof. 9 Then was king Belshazzar greatly troubled, and his countenance was changed in him, and his lords were astonied. 10 Now the queen, by reason of the words of the king and his lords, came into the banquet house: and the queen spake and said, O king, live for ever: let not thy thoughts trouble thee, nor let thy countenance be changed: 11 There is a man in thy kingdom, in whom is the spirit of the holy gods; and in the days of thy father light and understanding and wisdom, like the wisdom of the gods, was found in him; whom the king Nebuchadnezzar thy father, the king, I say, thy father, made master of the magicians, astrologers, Chaldeans, and soothsayers; 12 Forasmuch as an excellent spirit, and knowledge, and understanding, interpreting of dreams, and shewing of hard sentences, and dissolving of doubts, were found in the same Daniel, whom the king named Belteshazzar: now let Daniel be called, and he will shew the interpretation.

It is often stated that the only thing man learns from history is that man doesn't learn anything from history. In the case of Belshazzar this is verified in verse 22 where Daniel tells him he knew the history of God bringing Nebuchadnezzar to humility in the past. Belshazzar would have known how that the magicians, soothsayers, wise men and astrologers had failed Nebuchadnezzar in the past yet here he is relying on them as his grandfather did.

Is this not the way we are so many times. Instead of turning it all over to God and trusting him we will seek after men first and God last. When all else fails then we will bow and admit to God He is our last hope. If we would but start making God our first and last hope, in truth our only hope, our lives might not get in such a mess at times. It has been a fact that when nations turn to men instead of God the nation will fall. Men will turn to science and forget the greatest scientist of all. People turn to medicine and Doctors without first taking it to Jesus in faith believing. When we try to limit God to only a spiritual relationship apart from our physical and mental well being we are asking for trouble. Lest any of you think I am discouraging going to the Doctor when ill I am not. I am only saying go to the Lord in prayer first and seek His will first before acting on the matter and placing your health and well being in the hands of mortal men who make as many mistakes as you do. The only difference is their mistakes may mean the difference in life and death and your mistakes probably don't.

Belshazzar gathers his "elite" around him and shows them the writing on the wall. As "interpretations belong to God" (Gen. 40:8) and it was God who wrote the mystery, Belshazzar would have done just as well bringing in the toddlers in the kingdom to do the interpretation. As the wise men fail and word reaches the Queen (possibly his mother or grandmother) she enters and reminds Belshazzar of Daniel who revealed the mysteries to Nebuchadnezzar. Notice the attributes that she recognized in Daniel. 1. Light 2. understanding 3.wisdom, like the wisdom of the gods, 4 an excellent spirit, 5. knowledge, 6. understanding, 7. interpreting of dreams, 8 shewing of hard sentences, and 9. dissolving of doubts . These are all attributes of the Saviour but we must remember it was the Spirit of God in the man Jesus that was the power of God in Him.

All the attributes of the 9 things above are attributes of the Holy Spirit. In Gal. 5:22 we have 9 attributes of the Spirit called "fruit". All the above attributes were "in" Daniel and it is only the Spirit of God that could impart these attributes just as it is the Spirit of God in the Christian that produces the fruit mentioned in Galatians. We see in this passage then the work of the Spirit coming alive in man. Working in man the way God intended the Spirit to be able to work

Notice again the list above and think of Jesus. Jesus was fully God and fully man. In 1 Cor. 15:45 Jesus is called the last Adam and in vs. 47 following He is called the second man. Jesus had to be fully man or He could not have died on the cross as God is immortal. He had to be fully God as the Bible tells us plainly in John 14 that the Word (God: see John 1:1) "was made flesh".

Look at the list again: Jesus is Light (John 1:4-9). In Jesus was understanding (Luke 2:47, Luke 24:45) Wisdom (Matt. 12:42, 13:53-54) In Jesus was an excellent Spirit (Luke 4:14,18) In Jesus was knowledge (Matt. 12:25, Luke 6:8) Jesus had understanding (Luke. 2:47) interpretation of dreams (Gen. 40:8, 1Cor. 4:5) Shewing of hard sentences: (Matt. 22:17-22, John 8:3-11) Dissolving of doubts: (Matt. 14:25-33). Every attribute very much an attribute of Jesus. Every attribute and attribute of the Holy Spirit working in the Christian.

The queen had no doubt that Daniel could interpret the writing and as such urged Belshazzar to call Daniel. Belshazzar heeds the advice but one must wonder whether the king would wish he had not heeded the queen when Daniel came before him and interpreted the writing on the wall.

made a great impression upon me .

Yes we are to go to the Lord
in prayer first. Amen.

DO YOU SEE THE HEBREW CAPTIVE KNEELING?

Do you see the Hebrew captive kneeling,
At morning, noon and night, to pray?
In his chamber he remembers Zion,
Though in exile far away.

Refrain

Are your windows open toward Jerusalem,
Though as captives here, a “little while” we stay?
For the coming of the King in His glory
Are you watching day by day?

Refrain

Do not fear to tread the fiery furnace,
Nor shrink the lion’s den to share;
For the God of Daniel will deliver,
He will send His angel there.

Refrain

Children of the living God, take courage,
Your great deliverance sweetly sing.
Set your faces toward the hill of Zion,
Thence to hail your coming King.

Refrain

Daniel 6:10-11
Now when Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went into his house; and his windows being open in his chamber toward Jerusalem, he kneeled upon his knees three times a day, and prayed, and gave thanks before his God, as he did aforetime.
Then these men assembled, and found Daniel praying and making supplication before his God.

that Hymn: DO YOU SEE THE HEBREW CAPTIVE KNEELING?
I like the words and if the melody is as good as the words it is a great song. A hymn to remind one of the deliverance that is in God if we will but submit to Him and keep our knees worn from prayer.

Can you imagine 21 days of prayer (Dan. 10:2 with Dan. 10:12)? Have you ever tried even 1 hour of fervent prayer? (Mark 14:37-38) After 5 or 10 minutes you get to feeling everything is repetition and start feeling guilty for not being able to pray more earnestly.

Daniel may not have spent 21 days on his knees but I will venture to say that for the 21 days he was constantly in communication with God in prayer and intercession.

I am glad you could hear the song, Connie.

I thought maybe the link went bad or I posted it wrong.

God bless you always,

Julie
