Genesis 22:7-10 And Isaac spake unto Abraham his father, and said, My father: and he said, Here am I, my son. And he said, Behold the fire and the wood: but where is the lamb for a burnt offering? 8 And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together. 9 And they came to the place which God had told him of; and Abraham built an altar there, and laid the wood in order, and bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar upon the wood. 10 And Abraham stretched forth his hand, and took the knife to slay his son.

The words paint a graphic picture of intense determination of the father and great puzzlement on the son. Isaac finally can contain himself no more. "Father!" "Yes, my son?". We have everything we need but the lamb for the burnt offering. Where is the lamb?" Possibly the greatest hidden truth in the Bible is bound in Abraham's answer to his son as they trudged to the place of sacrifice. Notice carefully Abraham's answer. "God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering." Chances are you are reading thinking ahead to the ram with it's horns caught in the thicket but I want you to look carefully at the wording. "God will provide HIMSELF." Wonder of wonders found in God's word centuries before Jesus dies on the cross as a sacrifice the Word of God declares in the Book of Genesis that He will be the Lamb!! I realize this sentence can be read in more than one way and that's the way God intended but if you will stop and thing you could take the word "Himself" out and it would not change the meaning of the verse from the superficial standpoint. It is only when you zero in on the word Himself and it's connotation that the deeper truth is revealed.

What did John the Baptist say when he saw Jesus coming to him? "----- Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world." (John 1:29) The Lamb of God, yep that's Him!
Now look at John 1:1: "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. " Of course John was speaking of Jesus. Now look at verse 14 of John 1. "And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. "

Is there any doubt? Look at this! 1 Timothy 3:16 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory. There can be no doubt the scriptures all testify that this Jesus who was the Lamb of God was God in the flesh. One more: 1 Peter 1:18-19 Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; 19 But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:

Jesus was in view in Genesis 22:8. Isaac was only the type. The wood typified the cross. The trip up the mountain typified Jesus trip up Calvary. The place where God told Abraham to build the altar (vs. 9) was almost certainly the exact spot where the cross would be placed in the hole in th e ground. I believe it to be the spot where the tree of the knowledge of good and evil stood. The place of temptation and failure was to be the place of victory and what a victory it would one day be.

Abraham bound his son and placed him on the wood just as Jesus was placed on the cross. Abraham then took his knife with the full intention of slaying his son. Abraham fully intended to go through with it. It is an amazing picture that causes much reflection on true faith and obedience to God. Without doubt the faith of Abraham was far above the average Christian. Who among us could trust God as far as Abraham did? Who among us would be willing to kill our own child at the command of God?

Finally we see the submission of Isaac. Abraham was well over 100 yrs. and if the typology is followed he would have been around 133 yrs. old and Isaac would have been 33 or so years old. What 130 yr. old man could have forced a 30 yr. old man? Isaac dutifully submitted himself to the hands of his father as Abraham bound him. Can you imagine the look in each other's eyes as they gazed each into the soul of the other? The sadness in Abraham's eyes as he carried out God's command. The look of questioning in Isaac's eyes and the thoughts that ran through his mind as his father bound him. All that raced through Isaac's mind would burst forth in sound in almost 2,000 yrs. with the cry; "My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?" (Matt 27:46)

No one knows what if any actual conversation took place on the mount but the great love and torment that each experienced mirror the love and torment of the Father and Son as they carried out the master plan. No man can fathom the great love God held for mankind that would move Him to sacrifice His only begotten Son for man. No man can fathom the great love that Abraham held for God that would move him to explicit obedience to carry out such a deed. No man can fathom the love and obedience that Isaac held that would compel him to willingly let his father offer him as a sacrifice.

"Who among us could trust God as far as Abraham did? "

This is something I have often pondered.

"
No man can fathom the great love that Abraham held for God that would move him to explicit obedience to carry out such a deed."

Or the great love God holds for us in that He provided the greatest and perfect sacrifice the universe has ever known .

John 3:16
