by purchasing the land at an exorbitant price insured that the purchase would be known throughout all the land. It would have generated much talk about how Abraham "got took". The land also would be secure in that all knew he had purchased it by it being noised abroad.

Given the attitude by many that Israel has no claim to any of the land of Palestine it stands out as proof that a Hebrew had indeed legitimately purchased a section of land just a few miles south of Jerusalem and a little to the west.

This was not the only purchase. Jacob bought a burial place from Hamor the sons of Hamor in Shechem. (Joshua 24:32)

Buying the land instead of receiving burial places as gifts also insured against the bones being removed over land disputes in the future.

One other thought is also that by purchasing the land for burial it kept the grave site segregated from the unclean, idol worshiping Philistines and Canaanites. The Hebrews could control who would be buried along side their dead.
