Daniel 6:24-28 And the king commanded, and they brought those men which had accused Daniel, and they cast them into the den of lions, them, their children, and their wives; and the lions had the mastery of them, and brake all their bones in pieces or ever they came at the bottom of the den. 25 Then king Darius wrote unto all people, nations, and languages, that dwell in all the earth; Peace be multiplied unto you. 26 I make a decree, That in every dominion of my kingdom men tremble and fear before the God of Daniel: for he is the living God, and stedfast for ever, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed, and his dominion shall be even unto the end. 27 He delivereth and rescueth, and he worketh signs and wonders in heaven and in earth, who hath delivered Daniel from the power of the lions. 28 So this Daniel prospered in the reign of Darius, and in the reign of Cyrus the Persian.
There is a vast difference in going into the lions den with God and going in alone. God may not keep us from trouble but He will keep us through trouble.
We have a familiar saying that applies here: "What goes around comes around." The presidents who plotted against Daniel and set the trap that he might be snared are caught in their own device. We can find several Biblical illustrations that fit here. Haman comes readily to mind. In the Book of Esther Haman had a deep hatred and jealousy against Mordecai because Mordecai would not bow to Haman although the King had elevated him over all the other princes. The king had also commanded people to bow and do reverence to Haman which Mordecai the Jew would not do. Because of Mordecai's refusal Haman conspired to kill him and all the Jews in the land. Haman had a gallows built to hang Mordecai on but was himself hanged on it after being forced to do honor to Mordecai. As Haman had meted to Mordecai it was instead meted to him. Matthew 7:2 For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.
The story of the tables being turned on those who would kill Daniel is prophetic of God's judgment and justice. Daniel had done no harm to the elites of Media/Persia and had not even lashed out when he knew what they were up to. He trusted in the Lord and depended on what is found written in Romans 12:19 which says: "Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord." King Saul had it applied to him for his continual trying to kill David who had done him no harm but had rather tried his best to "honor the king" even as the king was his enemy. The account is a lesson to us as to how we are to treat others. We are to remember that God will bless the peace makers (Matt. 5:9) while declaring those "who live by the sword shall die by the sword".(Rev. 13:10, Matt: 26:52). The account is also prophetic of the little nation of Israel. God told Abraham that he would bless them that blessed him and curse them that cursed him. That all the promises were to be through his "seed" we can understand it was a warning and a promise concerning the treatment of His chosen people. All one has to do to verify this is to read through the Bible how God has destroyed those who came against Israel and has bless those who embraced Israel.
This is a great lesson to nations today. We in the U.S.A. have been blessed immensely through our friendship with Israel. We must beware of those who would have us to be like Haman.
We also see in the passage the hurt of the innocents by the actions of their parents. The families of the offending presidents and princes suffered for their misdeeds. Innocents in every nation suffer for the misdeeds of their leaders. Many has been the nation whose women and children were slaughtered because of the transgressions of the despots of the world. Sometimes countries have been invaded without cause and the people suffered but all too often judgment has fallen because of those in power.
Finally we see the end of the matter with judgment over. Darius honored and blessed God. The Bible is clear that God will be honored through it all: Romans 14:11-12 For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God. 12 So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God.
Darius, before meeting Daniel, was just as pagan as Nebuchadnezzar. The result with Darius was the same as it was with Nebuchadnezzar. After witnessing the power of God working through Daniel they could only come to the conclusion that they needed and desired what Daniel had. Daniel was a living witness to the goodness, power and mercy of Almighty God. Their little puny idols were helpless against even the smallest problems but Daniel's God worked through Daniel in such a way that Daniel and his companions had been delivered miraculously from certain death and they as well as the kings had been blessed by Daniels God.
Daniels life is an example for us a Christians. The only Bible many read is the life of a Christian. How we conduct ourselves before a lost and doomed world makes a difference in whether they want what we have or couldn't care less for what we have. The witness of our mouth can be great but if our life doesn't testify to our words we are branded as hypocrites.
The decree of Darius in verses 26 and 27 says it all about Daniels witness, life lived and power of God through him displayed. "I make a decree, That in every dominion of my kingdom men tremble and fear before the God of Daniel: for he is the living God, and stedfast for ever, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed, and his dominion shall be even unto the end. He delivereth and rescueth, and he worketh signs and wonders in heaven and in earth, who hath delivered Daniel from the power of the lions." It couldn't have been stated better. Darius didn't know it but he became a prophet at that moment. He told the story of the Revelation and of the glorious end for those who are delivered from the "roaring lion" (1 Pet. 5:8) to live in God's Kingdom.
