St. Mary's is simply too small to compete in football on any level above Division III. It makes financial and institutional sense for that school to drop football, in my opinion.

Santa Clara, on the other hand, is another story. I'm a Northern Californian (and a San Francisco State grad), but have lived in the Northeast for nearly 30 years. I see no reason why Santa Clara can't follow the lead of schools like Fordham and Villanova, which are flourishing at the D I-AA level.

What I've been told, though, is that the SCU administration isn't moved by any argument that LTP makes. Hey, I can see why; fielding a competitive D I-AA football team costs a lot of money; you can't write off the cost of a money-losing college football team on your income tax.

Nevertheless, if any school on the coast has the resources to return to competitive football, it's Santa Clara (and maybe the University of the Pacific as well). As an old Gator who watched SF State and Santa Clara battle on more than one occasion, I'd like to see the Broncos come back.
