Man I wish the university would consider reinstating a program. Didn't Alfaro's son play QB at UC Davis a couple years back?
officially now grandfather-father-son lineages of would be Broncos have been broken as they play elsewhere.

- Making SCU a "Real School" -- Carl Brodt (Class of 1973), 18:35:58 11/05/08 Wed [5]
Perhaps SCU has more than enough applicants these days, but it would undoubtedly have even more if it had a football program. Many high school students (both girls and boys) believe that football is an important part of what they want in a college experience and decide not to apply to schools without a football program.
This point was brought home to me by my grandson, who currently plays JV football for Berkeley High School, when I told him that he might want to consider Santa Clara for college. He asked me about its football program, and when I said that SCU had none, he said simply, "I want to go to a real school, grandpa," and that was that.
Please post news of any discussions about reintroducing football to SCU, even if at a club level. Thanks.

The jersey will probably occupy my office in the coming years, but I wanted Santa Clara alumni to know that I would consider parting with the 1992 jersey if anyone was interested in purchasing it as a holiday gift. I am a 1994 graduate who purchased the #22 jersey in the spring of my junior year. Should you be interested, feel free to contact me with the email address provided. Hopefully, this jersey can find its way into the home of a passionate Bronco. Watching FCS playoffs and wishing that Santa Clara could once again compete!

- Talking to the students: could hasten a return of SCU football? -- Mike Andrews, 20:13:47 12/03/12 Mon [1]
Every chance I get to engage with current students at SCU (ie: interviewing candidates, taking fundraising calls, concession
Stand at a basketball game, etc): I always take an interest in what they are accomplishing academically and socially on campus; and if the opportunity presents itself i may take a chance to ask their opinion on the subject of intercollegiate football. In a very high percentage of cases these kids indicate it would be a great thing and be a source of pride if anything having SCU football.
Keep talking and stay positive, alums! These kids are smart and are good advocates!

- New Stadium in Santa Clara on its way -- Ryan Patrick Mahoney '15, 08:08:51 08/13/11 Sat [2]
http://sanfrancisco.cbslocal.com/2011/08/03/49ers-unveil-new-model-for-santa-clara-stadium/
The long standing proposal for a new 49er's stadium in Santa Clara picked up steam at the end of this NFL lockout and is looking like it will, in fact, be built. Of course, a 68,500 seat stadium is a bit ambitious for a school like Santa Clara, but it would not be necessary to open the whole of the stadium's seating for Bronco games. Off the top of my head, I know that Miami University plays their games in Sun Life Stadium, and even the mighty Hurricanes, often a legit national title contender, cannot fill the massive 70,000 seat arena. I believe that the Washington Huskies will be playing their games at Qwest Field while Husky Stadium is renovated. So there is at least a small precedent for college teams playing in pro stadiums. Would Buck Shaw be an adequate place for a D1-AA team, or do you think that playing in the new Niners stadium is something that could generate a positive buzz for a fledgling team? Either way, this new building will make it seem even sillier that SCU lacks a team, with a world class facility so near to the campus.

- Coach Dick Gallagher -- Joe Sutherland, 04:55:32 11/07/10 Sun [1]
For all you old SCU football fans -- and I mean old. I had my Santa Clara "Bend it like Beckham" sweatshirt on the other day and had to bring my dog to the local vet here in DC. The aide who checked me in told me her father was the head coach of the Broncos long, long ago. Identified him as Dick Gallagher, who then moved on to be with the Browns, she said.
For the record, I'm a Dayton Flyer and we've been going through what SCU went through until the program was dropped. Dwindling attendance ... and sad, the students don't even support the Flyers even though they are terrific Div I non-scholarship program. Not sure how much longer a private Catholic school can keep the program going.
Also for the record, my son is a '08 grad of SCU, probably the only undergrad there during his time who was a DC native. Wonderful school. Go Broncos.

- rugby -- L.D. Freitas, 12:44:49 04/10/08 Thu [2]
Hey, at least rugby had a great year, and for now, that's the closest thing to football the school has! Unfortunately they lost 24-17 to Utah Valley State in the Pacific Coast playoffs this past weekend, after beating Western Washington the previous afternoon, so they won't be in the finals at Stanford in three weeks. Good on the SCUTS! They were 7-0 in Nor Cal College Division 2 play for '08.
I don't know if football returning to SCU would help the rugby program, but perhaps it would, as many gridders were also ruggers in the past. The women's rugby team did okay this year as well.
So maybe football will return with a new administration running the school, but it will take lots of bucks, and most importantly, it'll take support of the students and alumni to buy tickets and attend games.

I've been here a few times, trying to advocate starting a club football team at SCU. I've been informed that Locatelli is gone, so it's time to either revive an NCAA football team or at least a club team. It would be nice if any of you could organize a club team, i've gotten in contact with Chico State and UCSD and they liked the plan. I need to know if any of you would like to start club football and help me join a nationwide amateur league or start a club football league for California college teams..

Attention, students, alumni of SCU..I'am on the process of creating a club football team at Cal State LA. They havent had a football team since 1978 and i figure to bring back football life at that campus as well as other campuses throughout California. I can't do on my own with out the support of students and alumni from schools that have dropped football..It's pathetic to see California universities to have only a good 10 that play football while others such as UOP, SCU, St. mary's, CSUN, Long Beach St. etc. have a high enrollment and not have a football team. Fresno State has a much smaller enrollment compared to Long Beach and they have a football team..If anyone reads please contact me in starting club football at universities with extinct college football. It's the only way to revive life at these colleges.. I understand Chico state is very interested in organizing a team.

- Campbell U. Football -- Lurking Dog, 16:56:34 08/27/08 Wed [1]
BUIES CREEK - Ten days before its first football game in 58 years, Campbell University was making sure the new scoreboard lights up, plugging in all the plugs and, above all, hoping ticket buyers wouldn't outnumber places to put them in a half-finished stadium.
Not a bad problem to have, if you like to look at the camel's hump as half-full.
"I mean, we're selling tickets left and right," athletic director Stan Williamson said in a telephone interview. "My biggest concern right now is how many people we can get inside that fence to watch the football game next Saturday."
The stadium, which is being built in phases as more money is raised, is designed to hold 10,000 permanent seats. About 2,200 were completed in time for the Fighting Camels' opening game against Birmingham-Southern at 1 p.m. on Saturday, so Campbell was trying to put up enough temporary bleachers to seat the rest of an expected crowd of 4,270. As a last resort, some fans might have to watch from the standing-room areas.
It will be first-come, first-served for general admission seats.
So far, anyway, football is doing what the Baptist university intended when it decided in April 2006 to bring back the game -- giving students, alumni and area residents a reason to spend Saturdays on campus.
When asked why the school needs football, Williamson said: "The No. 1 reason is just college life."
To that end, Campbell has spent $6 million, most of it on the new stadium and fieldhouse; joined the Pioneer Football League, with teams from Dayton, Ohio, to San Diego; rounded up 110 players; and even enticed a semi-retired former assistant of Chuck Amato back onto the field.
Stemming retirement
Long before Campbell re- entered the sport and N.C. State fired Amato, Greg Williams knew he'd never leave Raleigh to take another coaching job. He had played at State, gone through two coaching stints there and moved 11 times in 38 years.
So, naturally, when his boss was let go, Williams figured he had seen his "last rodeo" as a coach. The defensive specialist spent a year doing clinics and giving seminars, and at 61, with five years at State, he was eligible for retirement benefits.
He chuckles now just thinking of the unexpected opportunity to become the assistant head coach at a non-scholarship program. With a resume that lists stops at Georgia, West Virginia and LSU, he admitted he was skeptical when he heard from the new coach, Dale Steele, in January.
"I was like, 'Campbell? What are they gonna have?' " he recalled.
His wife, Mary Anne, still a receptionist at NCSU's Murphy Football Center, persuaded him to drive down for look-see. What he saw was a new fieldhouse and artificial-surface field before the team had played its first game.
"And I thought, 'Well, you know, I don't have to move, and maybe this is gonna be a first-class thing,' " Williams said. "... If I could have gotten a job at Duke, or even Carolina or East Carolina, someplace in this area, I would have taken the job. But I didn't get any, so this came up, and I'm glad I didn't get any of those jobs. This is fun."
Unlike Steele and Williams, who's working with the defensive backs, most of the coaches have little experience. All but one, however, have played or coached major college football. The idea of a new college program far removed from a pressure-cooker environment proved so appealing that Steele said he routinely heard from 80 to 85 coaches every time he was ready to hire another assistant.
"One of the things about starting from scratch is we don't have any baggage," Steele said. "Nobody's got an attitude that we have to change. We're a blank page. I think that challenge intrigues a lot of coaches."
Student assistants
Before they arrived, though, Steele was on his own searching for players. He started with the student body. Fifty-two students showed up at an initial meeting in 2006, and of those, about 10 have made it this far. They also served as Steele's first recruiters, giving high school players campus tours and talking up a program that didn't really exist yet.
With only an administrative assistant and no staff, Steele tried to streamline the process by inviting groups of prospective recruits to campus.
"We would have large group sessions, and then I would tell everybody at the end, 'If you want to talk to me individually about where we're going, I'll do it.' Well, there were a couple of Saturdays that I was here until 9 o'clock at night, and they'd be lined up out the door waiting," Steele said.
A former high school coach himself, Steele knew that good players would slip through the cracks in the Football Bowl Subdivision (formerly Division I-A) because they didn't fit the ideal profile, whether they were a step too slow or 10 pounds too light. It was those players whom Steele chose to pursue, contacting high school coaches around the state by e-mail, phone or "sending flowers out to 'em."
Because Campbell can't offer athletic scholarships -- a major reason the private school chose the Football Championship Subdivision level (formerly Division I-AA) -- Steele also sought recruits who would qualify for need-based or academic aid. Most of the players are getting some financial assistance, he said. (In a twist on the usual college football model, though, the enrollment of an additional 100 or so tuition-paying student-athletes is actually expected to help pay for the sport, said Williamson, the athletic director.)
In the made-for-TV story, Steele would have found a ragged collection of overweight biology students and 145-pound wannabes to play for Campbell. In truth, everyone on the roster played high school football; more than 60 made all-conference or better; and 18 were team captains.
Steele said he immediately put the best ones on defense, figuring that will give Campbell the best chance to win in its first season. The Camels won't be afraid to punt often, trying to keep the score close. But it's hard to imagine a former East Carolina assistant under Steve Logan staying conservative indefinitely.
"I don't like that term 'West Coast offense,' but that's basically what we are," said Steele, who wants his team to master a few plays and run them out of many different formations. "We're gonna put a lot of -- this is a term Steve used a lot -- 'eyewash' on things. We'll make you think we're doing one thing when we're still doing the same thing."
He has a feeling he put together a better team than he thought he could in the first couple of years, not that much is expected of Campbell. Jeff Sagarin's preseason computer ranking lists the Fighting Camels at No. 244 among 245 college football teams.
Steele and his staff won't know for sure what they have until Saturday.
"It'll be a surprise for the kids, for us, for everybody," Williams said. "Heck, I don't know what's gonna happen."

I am a sports writer at George Mason University's student-run website Connect Mason. While this does seem strange for me to be posting here, Mason is in the same dilemma as Santa Clara, well almost.
Mason has fielded a club team since 1993, yet the university will not allow it to attain varsity status. If it is any consolation, the same athletic director that was in place during the take-down of Bronco football is the man running things at Mason.
If there are any former coaches, players or those who started Let Them Play that can help me out in connecting the dots between Santa Clara and Mason, I would greatly appreciate the help. If what I can do on this end helps with your efforts here in Santa Clara, that would be the ultimate goal.

- Rutgers, So. Fla., UConn & LBSU? -- Hector C., 21:33:10 11/28/07 Wed [1]
Rutgers, So. Fla., UConn & LBSU?
Article Launched: 11/28/2007 03:34:52 AM PST
It's hard to be an old-time Long Beach State football fan, or even a new 49er fan who wishes the school still played the sport, and not ask one simple question:
How did this happen?
How did South Florida go from not having a football team in 1996 to being ranked No. 2 at one time in 2007?
How did the University of Connecticut go from playing in the Yankee Conference to Big East football and a bowl game this season?
Who or what is Troy, a sub-campus of USC? When did Boise State go from just another Big West scrub to the darlings of college football? Where did all these schools in Florida come from, Cuba? When did Louisville and Cincinnati go from independents of little note to members of the BCS-eligible Big East? And how did Oregon State, Rutgers, Wake Forest and Kansas State come back from the collegiate dead?
When Long Beach State stared at the red ink bleeding from the football program in 1991, it made the tough but seemingly sensible decision to drop football and put its limited resources elsewhere. Whatever psychic gains came from George Allen's one season as head coach in 1990 were lost when he died and the team wallowed through 1991.
And even the most diehard football fan would have to admit that the usual home crowd for a football game at Vets Stadium would comfortably fit in the Pyramid, or at least the Long Beach Arena.
Yet here we are in this strange new world with strange new names thriving.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Advertisement
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There are 17 institutions that have become Division I-A teams since 1990, and all but three have attended a bowl game. In the wake of the 49ers, as well as Cal State Fullerton, Santa Clara and Pacific, dropping football, other schools went in the other direction.
South Florida launched a football campaign in 1991, the year Long Beach punted. By 1993, it had raised $10 million and launched a season-ticket sales program even though there was no football team in place. They played their first game in 1997, won their first I-A game in 2000, joined Conference USA in 2003, was adopted by the Big East in 2005, won its first bowl game last season and was ranked No. 2 in October of 2007.
Florida Atlantic University convened a committee to study football in 1997, created a founders program with more than 100 well-heeled members, hired former Miami coach Howard Schnellenberger to spearhead the program launch in 1999, and in 2001 took the field.
Boise State was a member of the I-AA Big Sky Conference until it filled a hole in the diminished Big West in 1996. Civic leaders launched its own bowl in 1997 (the Humanitarian), the Broncos joined the WAC in 2001, and last year made the BCS field, upsetting Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl.
Central Florida, Troy and Connecticut also took the road from playing lower division football, as low as Division III at the first two schools, to Division I-A status.
There are several reasons for the influx of newbys in the college landscape.
In 1994, the NCAA cut the number of scholarships a school could give to 85, thus sending talent usually stockpiled at the bigger schools elsewhere.
Despite being more farcical than a Marx Brother movie, the Bowl Championship Series, which began as the Bowl Coalition in 1992 and mushroomed when the Pac-10 and Big Ten joined in 1997, has given college football a huge goose of publicity.
Football in the south became its new cotton, and seven schools cashed in by jumping up from Division I-AA or jump-starting football, getting big paychecks to play SEC and ACC teams in nonconference games.
Conference expansion - every BCS conference except the Pac-10 has added a member since 1991 - and carpet-bagging created holes in some conferences that have been filled by the likes of South Florida and others.
Conference USA began in 1996 and the Sun Belt in 2001 as schools went looking for any kind of league that would give it stability. Thanks to the threat of a lawsuit, those conferences as well as the Mountain West and Western Athletic now have access to the BCS system, as Boise State did last season. Hawaii is expected to land a BCS bid this season.
The bowl landscape also blew up. There will be 32 bowl games this season; there were 18 in 1992. That means 28 more teams get a bowl "reward," and where once it took at least an 8-3 record for a team to secure a bowl bid, a .500 record is all that's required for bowl eligibility today.
The impact has helped the once-poor as well as the brand new.
In 1991, Oregon State went 1-10 and was in year 21 of a 28-year run without a winning season; Rutgers was in its first season in the new Big East and would go 18-75-1 in league play through 2004; Wake Forest had posted just six winning seasons since joining the Atlantic Coast Conference in 1953 and it would be 2006 until they did it again; and K-State had just posted its second winning season since 1970.
Yet the Beavers, Demon Deacons and Wildcats have all played BCS games in the last half-decade, and Rutgers was in the 2006 season's national title hunt.
All of this is in stark contrast to what happened in California. Eleven California schools have dropped football since 1991, including seven schools in the Cal State system. The only CSU schools playing Division I football are Fresno, San Diego and San Jose.
Title IX, the gender equity decision, became law in 1979 and was reaffirmed strongly in a 1988 Supreme Court decision that directed all schools to comply. In 1993, the California chapter of the National Organization for Women (CAL-NOW) filed suit against the CSU system for violations of Title IX.
The CSU system settled the lawsuit that same year and agreed to strict enforcement of funding and participation guidelines. That decision led other non-CSU in state to follow similar guidelines to forestall any other suits.
Schools outside California generally operate under components of Title IX that provide some latitude, most notably a "development" clause allowing schools to show compliance with a steady increase in facilities and opportunities. Not surprisingly, those schools with strong football programs were best equipped to fund women's programs.
Big West football, where Long Beach resided, never had any clout, and it died after the 2000 season. With the exception of Boise State and Fresno State, most of the former Big West football-playing members have continued to struggle on the field. UC Davis and Cal Poly are the only current members of the Big West who play football, and they do so at the Division I-AA level.
There have been modest suggestions to bring football back to Long Beach State. When one sees the Bulls of South Florida ranked No. 2 and the Broncos of Boise State running the Statue of Liberty Play to flummox Oklahoma, it certainly provides inspiration.
It could happen - if the school could find the kind of donors that created South Florida football; the kind of civic officials who put a bowl game in Boise; a fan base larger than that of Poly High School; a conference with some football clout; and the kind of Title IX flexibility that allows Florida to grow football while California football withers.
That's all.

- Please help with the petition to bring football back to Long Beach & to Cal State Fullerton!! -- Hector Cruz, 20:05:49 11/17/07 Sat [1]
I understand most of you believe this is a loss cause But, i'm trying to get most colleges in California to return football back the way it should be. I discovered that Long Beach State & CSU-Fullerton have both petitioned trying to bring football back. Since, most schools dropped the game because of "budget constraints" they've all been long gone before me and anyone else had the privledge to play for them or even watch them. Would any of you be interested in also helping to get support for Long Beach State football and CSU-Fullerton. I want from all of you to support a cause on bringing football in some schools with a good size enrollment to get a team, making it more competitive and optional to watch college football and to send young athletes to play the game close to home. These schools produced such great players as Terrell Davis, former Running Back for the Denver Bronos and Terry Metcalf for LB and Mike Horan, Damon Allen for CSU-Fullerton.
If interested here's the link.

- Create a club football team! -- Hector Cruz, 13:21:40 11/03/07 Sat [5]

- Death to Title IX -- Clairese Lippincott, 20:17:51 10/14/06 Sat [3]
You are all talking around the real problem. The SATAN in collegiate sports is TITLE IX, that undemocratic legislation that mandated the artificial "gender equity" idea. Prior to TITLE IX, STUDENTS determined what sports that would be on THEIR campuses. A group of students would form a club and if there was sufficient interest, after a typical period of five years, then the club sport could apply for varsity status. Sports teams varied substantially from campus to campus. There few women's varsity programs and few clubs because there were fewer women and those women were not very interested in sports. Ask the typical "varsity" woman these days and she is there for the free ride. Most would not even be in the sport if there was not a free ticket through college that went with it. Men, you guys have been had by the lesbian mafia! They pushed this gender equity BS so that they could gut your programs and take away your opportunities at colleges. The Title IX strategy worked so well that many campuses are having trouble attracting men. Don't you guys get it? Title IX was pushed into law in order to harm American Men; and it has harmed our men while ensuring nearly all lesbians can get a free ride through college. Title IX is undemocratic and is BAD LEGISLATION. REPEAL TITLE IX and return fairness and democracy to our campuses.

I'm writing this as one of the many victims of the discontinuing spree of football programs that has taken place over the past several decades in California. I was a junior at Cal State Northridge when my program was dropped. Since, that day I have been committed to help in whatever way I could to help anyone who was trying to fight the good fight to return any program to my home state. I grew up in the bay area, and I know that if successful; a Santa Clara Football program would bring about a great sense of pride to their community and students. Hopefully, someone, somewhere will see college football for all the good it does, instead of the blind propagand that title IX supporters have lauched against it; and do whats right for their school/students/alumni/community. Till that day, I know the many like me will remain commited to see a return to college football anywhere in California.
Most Sincerely,

- Xavier starting club football - a baby step for the Muskies? -- A Xavier fan, 08:24:54 05/27/06 Sat [1]
From www.xavier.edu...if you want more info about it, contact moormanjr1@xavier.edu.
Students lobby for return of football to University campus
Student vice president attempting to revive football program on Xavier's campus for 2006-2007 academic school year
05/22/06
We've all seen the T-shirts: "Xavier's Football: Undefeated Since 1973." But that undefeated streak might soon be put in jeopardy. Joe Moorman, recently elected administrative vice president for the student government association, is in the process of reviving the football program on Xavier's campus for the 2006-2007 academic school year.
Club football, it seems, is the answer to everyone's prayers. That's right, a team donning full pads, helmets and uniforms is expected to grace the field in competition with Division III junior varsity football teams from other Midwestern colleges. Now, Moorman has to tackle two goals: finding a head coach and finding sufficient funding. "[Coaching is] our number one priority right now," he said.
"As far as the issue of funding goes," Moorman affirmed, "we're unsure about how it will be funded, but we're confident we can do it. The main issue is that football has a huge start-up cost. Once we start it up, it's more of a matter of getting it off the ground."
Student government association president Steve Bentley, legislative vice president Willie Byrd and Moorman are exploring funding options.
Because the club football idea was the most popular item on his executive ticket during the executive elections, Moorman said that some executive funds would be used to pay for initial costs. Other avenues to explore for funding are administration, board of trustee members, alumni and alumni football players.
An information meeting was held on April 10 to gauge interest in participation. "I'd say there are around 50-60 interested guys, but that's not considering any incoming freshmen," Moorman said.
Additionally, Jim Ray, director of recreation sports, already gave Moorman permission to allow a club football team to practice on the intramural fields.
Why club football, rather than an NCAA football team?
"I knew attempts to start a football team have been made and failed," Moorman said. "An NCAA title is too expensive so I took a different approach. The vision was to take club football, turn it into a strong program and five to 10 years down the road, an opportunity for football to become an NCAA sport." Critical to the football program's success is the fact that club football hasn't met any opposition so far—perhaps only some skepticism.
"I think a lot of people are waiting to see if we can pull it off. I think the main concern people have is how we're going to pay for it," Moorman said. "We really need a strong commitment from players themselves. It's been fun, but we especially need freshmen and sophomore leaders to step up and commit to make it happen. Otherwise, it won't last for a year or two."

It occurs to me that this website and it's administrators have good intentions. They are interested in restoring football back to Santa Clara and other schools. But Folks, a lot more is needed than a simple webiste that no one even looks at.
To bring football back to Santa Clara, we need to take some ACTION instead of just sitting on our asses. This website has some good content with regards to Santa Clara Football history but does a half-ass job with regards to the future of Santa Clara Football.
Some people have thrown out some ideas but no one has acted upon them...not even the people themselves who have thought of the ideas. Everyone keeps saying: "We need to do something." Well the time is now or never...and ACTION is needed NOW!!!!!!!!!!
It is time to get Santa Clara people together with people from similar schools like St. Mary's, USF, etc. and take some ACTION.
If you are serious about your desire to bring football back to Santa Clara and other schools, then send me an email to:
bringbackfootball@hotmail.com
I, along with others, will be organizing a major publicity stunt for the return of football to SC and other schools in the next few months. It will take major contributions from interested parties. Please email me only if you are serious and will do everything you can to attempt to bring football back.
Thank you!

- Money Is Not the Reason Santa Clara Dropped Football -- scuUU, 19:37:04 06/24/04 Thu [2]
About 5 years ago Brent Jones offered to donate several million dollars to Santa Clara if they brought back football. However, despite this very generous offer, Locatelli declined. Why? Apparently SC's president has some sort of vendetta against football. Maybe he was made fun of by football players in his younger days, maybe he was cut from the football team, or maybe he's just a stupid dago who loves only soccer.
Locatelli is the LONE reason why SC doesn't have football anymore. I mean come on. Santa Clara is one of the richest schools in the Western United States. It is one of the oldest schools west of the mississippi, older than Stanford or Cal. SC has plenty of "old money" and can easily support a competitive football program.
The only way SC has a chance to get football back is to first get rid of Paul Locatelli.

I've been at SCU for a long long time. By the time the football program was ended, attendance at football games was so pathethic as not to be believed. While football was at one time a popular and well-attended activity at SCU (so I hear), by the time it ended that was certainly not the case.
After the demise of SCU football, other sports got more funding and attention and have done a great job. Soccer--men's AND women's, basketball--men's AND women's--are just a few examples.

49ERS NOTEBOOK
49ers weigh campsite switch
CONCERNS WITH PACIFIC; ERICKSON'S STAFF GROWS
By Dennis Georgatos
Mercury News
A decision is expected in a week or two on whether the 49ers will continue to hold training camp at the University of the Pacific in Stockton or move it to their Santa Clara practice facility.
The 49ers are midway through a 10-year deal with Pacific. General Manager Terry Donahue declined to say Thursday whether the team would have to pay a buyout if the contract is terminated. He said team officials have been in discussions with the school and plan at least one more meeting before a decision is made.
``We have a number of concerns; they have a number of concerns,'' Donahue said, declining to be specific. ``There are some things we need to get squared away. We're exploring the possibility of trying to make some things better.''
The 49ers have been unhappy over a shortage of office space and what they perceive as declining cooperation from the university, team sources said. Concerns also have been expressed about the condition of the practice fields and logistical problems associated with providing for player security on an open campus.
Pacific Athletic Director Lynn King did not return a phone call seeking comment.
``We're not looking for a better deal to go elsewhere,'' Donahue said. ``If we don't go back to Stockton, we're going to have training camp at our place.''
While Donahue is in Indianapolis this week for the NFL combine, Coach Dennis Erickson is staying behind to try to round out his coaching staff.
That process figures to accelerate with the hiring Wednesday of Mike Riley to succeed Erickson as Oregon State's coach. Erickson left the school last week to become the 49ers' coach, replacing the fired Steve Mariucci.
Al Simmons, Oregon State's secondary coach the past two years, was hired by Erickson on Thursday. Simmons will assist 49ers secondary coach Brett Maxie, focusing primarily on cornerbacks.
Beavers assistants Gregg Smith and Tim Lappano also are expected to join the 49ers after Riley edged them for the Oregon State job. Smith is expected to serve as assistant head coach and tight-ends coach; Lappano is expected to be the running-backs coach.
Terrell Owens' star has found a permanent home at the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga. The receiver, who lettered in football and basketball at the school during the mid-1990s, will be inducted Saturday into its Hall of Fame.
Owens won't be at the ceremony -- he's attending teammate J.J. Stokes' wedding -- but he has prepared a videotaped message expressing his appreciation.
The 49ers waived linebacker Alex Lincoln and cornerback Anthony Parker.

There have been other games over the last few years where former SCU opponents have squared off with teams in the WAC like Hawaii and Air Force. There is money in these games as well as broader exposure for the schools. It's a shame SCU can't push the envelope a little and find a way to build a new successful football program that can broaden SCU's recognition and limit cash burn by playing a few big-time opponents.
