It seems that with St. Mary's dropping football, returning football to the SCU campus is even further from reality. Let's face it: the sport just costs too much, and with so many other universities that had Division Two status that used to be on Santa Clara's schedule having dropped footall, who would be on the schedule? It's a nice dream to have football return, but without other schools playing on the same level, like San Francisco State, Northridge State, UC Riverside, UC Santa Barbara; and with what were once Division Three or Two schools having moved up to One AA or One, like Davis or USD, there's even less teams around that could make up a schedule. I doubt Father Locatelli is going to want to fund a program where Santa Clara flies to the East Coast area to play such Division Three or Two stalwarts like Holy Cross or Williams College! It's the demise of Division Two and Three football here on the West Coast that really is the problem of returning football to SCU, and I don't hear of many attempts to resucitate football at schools that Santa Clara used to play.
Having played rugby and freshman footall at Santa Clara, I know that having a football program helped the rugby program with so many football players taking up rugby during its season. Without football, and with a coach, De Kock, a South African who was at SCU for three seasons, leaving after 2003, who made a real difference in players' attitudes and fitness, the rugby program became very successful. Rugby could become a more important sport at Santa Clara, given that football, especially with the current administration, will probably not be coming back any time soon. With Buck Shaw Stadium as a venue for collegiate finals, a facility rivalling Cal's or Stanford's rugby facilities, SCU could get a lot more national attention, at least for rugby's purposes. A good rugby program can be an excellent and way cheaper alternative to "gridiron" football.
