tom,its very simple..when the piston is at the top of its stroke it has a little rock in the piston and rod.when you degree a cam you time the cams perfectly to the rotation of the piston and rods,and it actually eliminates piston rock.realize this isnt all that cam degreeing does,degreeing the cam also simply sets the cam true to the motor,cause with the machines and assembly line that assemble the motors are not dead on set out of the factory.
