Chapter 86
Cashmere: I know I’m disgusting and I know you cannot bear to look at me right now, I’ll just leave
She got up and started for the door, Devin got up and blocked her path looking at her right in the eye
Devin: Its not that at all, its just that you are such an amazing girl and seeing you do this to yourself really gets to me. I mean despite all that ‘counsellor’ ish, I am still human and I can’t help but get affected when I see a beautiful rose like you getting trampled.
Cashmere: Yeah right
Devin: Its true. C’mon sit down please
She looked at him and sat back down- he also sat down.
Devin: You think you cannot be helped right?
Cashmere: Well yeah, its like I can’t stop
Devin: You can and you will. Now, what exactly is it that makes you wanna cut yourself?
Cashmere: I lost my boyfriend, my family are not really there for me, and I know I’m flunking
Devin: Firstly, you’re not flunking, you’re doing quite well, I mean didn’t you get an 85 on your last test?
Cashmere: Yeah…
Devin: And cos you lost a boyfriend doesn’t mean you have to be lost too, I mean think of all the lives he touched, would he want you to be cutting yourself up over him?
Cashmere: I don’t think so
Devin: And your family in their own way cares. Maybe if you talked to them more, they’d be able to help you. I mean no one knows what’s up with you until you say something, its not fair on them to be guessing about you.
Cashmere: But…
Devin: You know I’m right, listen, everytime you feel like cutting, you pick up a pen and write down why, and walk away from it, walk away from the knife or blade or whatever it is you wanna use, just walk away. Go somewhere else private say the bathroom and look into the mirror, and tell yourself what you were feeling, say it out and remind yourself that you are better than this, you are stronger than this and that you won’t stop fighting until you win. We both know cutting is not the answer, it won’t solve anything, it just makes things worse.
Cashmere looked down- this was going to be hard
Cashmere: I don’t think I can do it
Devin: We both know you can, just think of all the lives you touch- your friends, your family, Shawn’s, mine, and especially yours- do you want to let it go?
Cashmere [quietly]: No
Devin: Look I know it’ll be a hard road but the earlier you get on it now, the sooner you’d get over it.
Cashmere: You’re right; I gotta do this…for myself.
Devin smiled; she was so pretty when she got that determined look in her eyes
She got up
Cashmere: I can’t thank you enough
Devin: Look your presence and your trust in me is enough thanks.
She went towards the door
Devin: Look, I’m not supposed to do this, but here’s my number [he hands her a piece of paper], anytime you feel you’re not strong enough and its after the office has closed and you can’t get me here, call me and I’ll be there
Cashmere looked so grateful
Cashmere: Thank you
She gave him a hug and dashed out of the door- Devin smiled, he knew in his heart she’d get better and the self-harm would stop, someday.
A few days after, at college, Des and Lami were at the Fountain of Hope which was located by the IT block, it was around noon and they’d just finished a class [Lami majors in IT and Des majored in Business, but there was a class both had to be in for their majors].
Des [looking at her book]: Do you understand what Mike was going on about?
Lami: Well kinda, he was saying something about the importance of using networks in business
Des: But was he talking about IT networking, or Business networking
Lami: I think it was IT networking cos when he started talking about LAN networking and the Intranet and all that ish, but you know what, we have to read chapter 16 from that textbook that should explain it
Des: Oh you mean this one? [she held up their recommended textbook]
Lami nodded
Des: Ummm…okay then, cos I was looking at it last night while you were with Jason and some of the terminology was a little too much for me
Lami looked at her and smiled.
They sat quietly while Des was taking a look over at her lecture notes, they’d been sitting together for like 10-15 minutes when Des looked up and saw Lami smiling strangely at her
Des: What?
Lami [still smiling]: Oh nothing, just that I’m thinking how lucky I am to have you by my side and I’m thinking of all the drama we’ve been through, and how much of a fool I’ve been for not realising how special you truly are and that I love you so much I just wanna quit school run off with you to marry you and live on our private island where I never have to share you with anyone.
Des looked at him smiling back- he really was a little strange at times
Des: I know but the important thing is that we go through it together and we’ll make it, we always do.
She took his hand and he kissed it and both of them leaned in for a kiss. They were in the middle of it when they heard some people coughing. They broke it off to see it was Cat, John, Tyra and Cash smiling at them
Des: Oh its you guys…can y’all come back later we’re in the middle of something?
Cat: Whatever, can we go to Frosty’s and talk about the project
John: What project?
Cat: the one we were given in class to work on? The Shakespeare one?
Des: But Cat none of us major in Drama, only you do, so what does that have to do with us?
Cat [tone changes]: Y’all better move your butts otherwise there gon’ be some drama all up in here!
Des and Lami quickly packed up their books
Lami: yes ma’am
Lami [to John quietly]: Goodluck handling her
John: Thanks cos I might need it
Des managed to walk next to Cash on the way to Frosty’s
Des [quietly]: So how are you doing
Cash: Better
Des: You look it. So how are your sessions with Devin?
Cash [surprised]: How do you know?
Des: first of all, I’ve seen you go in to talk to him, and I know Devin through one of my cousins; and don’t worry he never talks about anything to do with work so I have no idea. All I just know is that you’ve been better and going with us to see Scary Movie 3 was great
Cash: Oh okay and yeah he’s helped me help myself to resolve a lot of issues
Des: that’s good, and you know that if you ever need a friend to talk to you can always
Cash smiled
Des [changing the topic]: Oh and one other thing you gotta tell me
Cash looked at her afraid she may have heard about her secret
Cash: What?
Des: Tell me where you got that top from, cos girl it looks great on ya!
Cash smiled in relief and laughed
Cash: Aiight, it’s at a little store in the West Side of the Mall and it’s called Perfect.
Des: Like that top on you huh?
Cash blushed
Des: I better be careful cos Lams be looking at me funny and he gon’ think I’m hitting on ya.
Cash laughed
Lami left John and went to walk beside Des on her right and Cash was on Des’s left
Lams [wrapping his arms around Des]: So Cash I hope Des hasn’t been torturing you with her “words of wisdom”
Des hit him playfully and Cash smiled
Cash: Nah she ain’t, she’s just been admiring my top…
Lami [interrupting her]: Which by the way looks great on ya, and you know what else would look great?
Cash: What?
Lami: Me giving you a hug. I’ve known you for a while now and I ain’t never hugged ya once, friends must hug at least once in a lifetime, otherwise they got issues with each other. You don’t got any issues with me do ya?
He went over to walk beside Cash, Des just looked on smiling
Cash [smiling]: No, unless you give my girl here issues which you ain’t for now, then I ain’t got none
Lami smiled
Lami: Aiight then, then would ya mind if I gave you a hug now?
Cash of course not
Lami pulled Cash closer to him and gave her a proper hug. John and Cat stopped talking and looked at Lami and Cash
Cat [to Des]: Whas wrong with them two?
Des raised her hands up
Des: I have no idea, like one minute he’s asking her if I’m not harassing her, next thing he’s asking her for a hug that friends must hug at least once in a while
Cat: Awww
She turned to John and hit him
Cat: Now why can’t you be sweet like Lami
John: First of all, ow! Secondly I am sweet…on you
Cat: Uh..uh whatever
By then, Lami had broken off the hug and gone back to being by Des’s side
Cat: Yo L, I’ve know you longer and how comes I don’t get a hug from ya
Lami: I still hugged you today!
Cat: that was a side hug, I want a proper one
John [to Des]: See what your man done caused now?
Lami laughed
Lami: Aiight then Catrina, come and be hugged by me
He went over and gave her a proper hug. Des playfully turns to John
Des: Oh John, you’re my long time friend from the days of the sandbox, why haven’t you hugged me in 5 minutes
John: Oh Deshone, come and be hugged, you to Cashmere
Des threw back her head and laughed, Cash could not believe this
Des: Aiight then
Both went to John and hugged him
So lets recap, Lami and Cat are hugging, John, Des and Cash are locked in a hug too.
Everyone broke it off except Lami and Cat
John: A yo Huggy Bear, can ya leave my girl alone and go back to yours?
Lami groaned
Lami: Aiight then
He broke it off and went back to Des.
Soon the topic changed to something else and in 15 minutes time, they got to Frosty’s
Des: Y’all go on, I gotta talk to Lami about something
John: Aiight then, we’ll get a table
When the others went in, Des took Lami’s hand and went over to the carpark where she normally parked her car, opened the car and got into the back seat. Lami looked at her strangely and got in as well. She leaned over and locked the car from the driver’s side
Lami: Whassup
Des: What was up with all that you did with Cat and Cash?
Lami’s face fell
Lami: I was just messing around, I didn’t know it would upset you and I promise never to….
Des [interrupting him]: Stop being yourself cos you are the sweetest, most caring and loving boyfriend slash fiancé a girl ever had, and you know all that stuff about you being lucky for finding me? I think I am the lucky one for finding you and ain’t nothing gonna change that, not Krys, not Jason, not any other drama out there waiting to happen to us, we’re never going to stop being an “us” and…
Suddenly she stopped and pulled a surprised looking Lami to her and kissed him
At Frosty’s
Cat: I swear she said she just wanted to talk to him for a while
Cash: You know how it is, I think they were talking about something before we came in and interrupted their flow
Cat: I don’t think kissing counts as talking
John: Maybe in their world it does
Cash: So, how’s the wedding plans coming along?
John groaned, Cat looked at him
Cat: Whatever. Yeah but so far so good. I’m getting the whole white wedding and the colours for the wedding are still being chosen, either white and burgundy, white and lilac, or white and royal blue
John: I say white and Royal blue cos I’m marrying me a princess and she deserves the best
Cash: Awww
Cat leaned in to kiss John, Cash looked away.
After 10 more minutes of them all being in Frosty’s Des and Lami walked in looking happy,
Cat: So where have you two been?
Des: We had to talk about something
John winked at Des and Lami
John: Uh Uh
Des: Lams ignore them, let’s sit beside them if we must
Lami pulled out a chair for her
Lami [adopting an English accent]: After you my lady
She smiled at him and sat down; he took a seat beside her. Cat kicked John under the table
John: Ow!
Des: Whassup?
John: Nothing, just had a muscle pull
Lami [whispering to Des]: Which one did he pull the Cat muscle?
Cat: I heard that!
Cash: Can we order, my belly’s starting to rumble!
Des [jokingly]: So that’s what I heard, I thought it was a monster truck starting outside.
Cash laughed
Cash: Yeah whatever, [calling to the waiter] A yo Martin, over here
Martin the waiter came to the table
Martin: You rang?
Des laughed
Des: Yeah we’d like to order?
Martin: Firstly tell Miss Cash not to call me like that, who does she think I am Benson the Butler?
Everyone laughed
Cash: Well Deshone, tell Benson over there that the next time he decides to owe me money even though he’s WORKING, he should remember to pay me, oh and will ya tell him not to come by my dorm room looking through my underwear drawer, I don’t keep my money there, at least not anymore since I’ve had Wil.E Kayode here looking through my stuff like I hid the Roadrunner in there!
The whole restaurant heard what Cash said and burst into laughter, even Martin had to laugh
Martin: Aiight whatever, so what do ya want Miss Cash Money
Cash: Some milk so I can shake you in it
Des & Co burst into laughter
Martin [writing down on his pad]: Ok that’s one milkshake without the milk cos girl you on something and it ain’t good whatever it be
Des: Do you guys know each other?
Martin: Yup. Been tryna get with this girl for ages now but she been turning me down cos she says I ain’t never had time for her, look like I always tell her, ‘Roses are red, violets are blue, I quit two jobs just to be here with you!’
Cash rolled her eyes
Cash: He takes my Psych class as an elective and he’s my project partner soon to be my guinea pig?
Martin: Hmm guinea pigs and restaurant what an interesting combination, and rest of y’all, next time put a leash on that girl she dangerous….and I like it
Everyone laughed again
Cash: Can I order now cos my belly’s rumbling
Martin: So that’s how you keep your belly looking so tight?
Cash rolled her eyes
Cash: No I do by lifting dudes like you in the air and throwing you into the main road
Martion [held his heart pretending to be hurt]: Ow!
At Lami’s dorm room, its just Des and Lami, they were sitting on the floor with books around them as they did every night
Des: Today was very funny though, I was so sure Cash was going to pour her milkshake over Martin’s head when he stuck his phone number to her burger
Lami: I think he called it a Burger with extra Martins on it
Des laughed
Lami: Them aside, I am glad she’s doing better and I’m especially glad that I’m all alone with you and no one to disturb us
Des [her voice dropping an octave]: Yeah it is good
They stared into each other’s eyes for so long
Lami [dreamily]: I can’t wait until these four years are over so we can get married and I can start telling our grand children how I met their still looking sexy as ever grandmother in high school, and how much we went through just to be together, and that even though next week is our 50th wedding anniversary and what would be nearly 56 years of me knowing her, I still get weak at the knees every time I lay eyes on the ebony goddess they call grandma and I call my soulmate.
Des could’ve cried
Des: Yeah and I’mma tell them that their grandfather may need to get his knees checked and that 50 years of marriage feels like 5 minutes when you have what probably is the world’s last thug with a soul as your best friend, lover, mentor and so much more and even death cannot do us part cos what we have is stronger than it and that as I loved him in high school, loved him through college, through all our trials and tribulations, our joys and our successes either individually or as a team, there is nothing I wouldn’t do for him, nothing. I took a bullet for him once, and I’ll do it again if I have to.
Lami caressed her face with his finger
Lami: God you’re perfect- you’re the reason why I go to church, cos I gotta thank God for sending you my way.
Both of them leaned in to kiss
After the kiss, she snuggled closer to him
Des: You know what else I can’t wait to happen
Lami: What?
Des: I have this vision of you and me on a Saturday morning, I’m in the kitchen making us something to eat and I leave the kitchen and stand at the living room doorway, you’re in the living room with our new born baby on what is a rocking chair, the sun streaming in through the curtains, baby’s asleep and you are as well, with the remote control almost falling from your other hand, the both of you a vision of content, and I can see myself with a smile on my face- life is perfect.
Lami: Wow that sounds good. So we gotta work hard, get outta here acing it all the way and make that vision come true, and y’know what, I’d love a babygirl as my first born
Des: Why?
Lami: I’d be surrounded by two lovely girls and be king of my castle, and if we do have a girl, I hope she is as beautiful and sweet as her mother
Des: Awwww, she will be cos she got Daddy here who’s honey dripping caramel sweet.
They sat there together and were starting to fall asleep when Des’s phone rang, she picked it up
Des: Hey Cash whassup?
Cash [in a panic]: Des we need you, you gotta come down now
Des sat up, Lami looked at her concerned
Des: What’s going on?
Cash: Tony- Tyra’s boyfriend? He’s in hospital, and Tyra’s been arrested
Des: What?! What happened?
Cash: Tony’s in hospital having suffered multiple bone breakage and a few bruises and Tyra’s been arrested and taken to the West Central Station- apparently, she beat him up!
Des: SHE BEAT HIM UP?!
Both her and Lami stood up, he got their jackets, quickly put their books to one side while Des was getting details of the station, she already knew the hospital Tony was- Mount Sinai Memorial [see earlier chapters, that was the hospital her, Lami, Krys & any other character who’d been to hospital went], she got his details like surname and what ward he was in.
Des: So where are you now?
Cash: Outside the hospital, Tyra cannot be released on bail due to the severity of the incident so she cannot be bailed or seen at all, so I’m outside the hospital calling you lot, and Devin cos I don’t know who else to call [her voice had risen to a greater panic]
Des: Its okay honey, we’ll go to the station just to get more info, and see if we can get anything and call Cat and John tell them to meet you at the hospital, we’ll be there after the station
She turned to Lami
Des: Is that okay?
Lami: Sure anything’s fine with me, lets go babe
Des: We’re on our way Cash
Cash [her voice calming]: Okay, thank you Des sorry to have disturbed you?
Des: No honey its fine, we’ll see you soon.
Cash: Bye!
Des: Bye!
Des hung up and her and Lami ran out of his dorm room.
Lami [once they’d gotten into the car and he was driving]: So, did I hear you correctly when you said Tyra BEAT UP Tony?
Des: Yeah
……………………………….
That’s all folks, glad to be back and sorry for the delay- it was my birthday last Saturday [the 6th] and I got college work up to my ears, and yes, I did miss all of you, esp Angie whose chapter I can’t w8 to c!
