Chapter 73
Back to Des and Lami. Lami really thought properly about what Krys spoke to him about, he decided to go over to Des’ that night. She’d just come back from hanging with a much neglected Letonia ever since Jiz had started taking his relationship with Cat even more serious. The doorbell rang and Des went to open it, it was Lami at the door. She turned around and walked away and Lami walked after her and both ended up in the living room. Des sat down ignoring him still. Lami sat beside her and began to talk
Lami: I know I’ve been acting shady and spending more time with Shawn and I can explain why.
Des turned to face him
Lami: Look don’t ever think I’m back with CVG at all okay? They tried to kill us remember and don’t think I’ll ever forget that. But Shawn’s my boy and apart from that, he was helping me with something.
Des: Let me guess, setting up Lib? Look I thought we were over that
Lami: I know and that’s not why
Des: So why have you been neglecting me and spending time with Shawn? I know he’s your boy and I can’t help but tolerate him for your sake, but you know he is always involved in trouble no matter how good he’s been to you.
Lami looked at Des and smiled
Lami: True. But he was helping me with this
He looked at her dead in the eye, and sat even closer to her
Lami: Deshone,
Des’ heart stopped- he rarely called her by her full name, so this definitely was serious
Lami: I don’t know how to say this……………
Des [her heart in her mouth]: What is it Lami, c’mon tell me
He took a pause and began to speak again
Lami: Things between us has been good apart from lately when I’ve not really been around, and you know I love you with all my heart, we’ve been through so much together and I know I cannot live without you, so to ensure that, here’s what I’m going to do.
He got down on one knee
Lami: I know its still early now but will you marry me after college?
He took a box out of his back pocket and opened it revealing one massive diamond ring. Des was speechless
Lami: Shawn had been helping me keep this a secret, and he helped me shop for this one, it took ages and ages to find this one, but it was worth it cos it reminded me of you, although it took me ages and ages to find you and even longer for us to finally get it together, but at the end, it was worth it. So what do you say? Will you marry me?
Des was speechless, all she could do initially was nod her head and when she finally got her voice back
Des: Y…y…yes I will Lami, I will
Lami put the ring on her finger and stood up, at the same time pulling her to standing position and they had a long kiss………
Letonia was at home a little confused as for the first time, she felt that maybe Jiz was resistant to her charms, she tried calling him but he’d blocked her number from his phone, she decided to go over to his. She dressed in her tightest and finest clothes [skirt, an almost there top, and knee high boots] and left home.
Cat and Jiz were together hanging out with Jiz’s older brother Cory and his girlfriend Mariah when the doorbell rang. Cory went to open the door, and Cat, Jiz and Mariah heard him raising his voice at the person at the door so they all went to investigate. They all stopped when they saw Letonia
Cory: I thought he told you not to call?
Letonia: Cory, look I know you never liked me and the feelings are mutual but I ain’t here to see you, I came to see Jiz
Cat: Oh no you ain’t! You come near us and I swear I’ll slap you back to the hole you crawled out of
Mariah and Jiz at this point held her back
Jiz: Look Letonia, I told you to go okay? I don’t want you anymore, I never did okay? All we had was one big mistake that nearly cost me my girl
Letonia took a step back
Letonia: Really? Do you know what you are giving up?
Cat: Why should he want that when he got me?
Letonia: You know what Cat, every day you grow dumber cos you actually believe he’ll be faithful to you
Jiz: hey don’t talk to my girl like that okay? Why don’t you go and leave us alone?
Cory: You heard him, get off my property!
Mariah: I think you’d better go now
Letonia flipped on Mariah
Letonia: NOW WHO F****** ASKED YOU TO PUT YOUR TWO CENTS IN? THIS IS BETWEEN ME AND JIZ, NO ONE ASKED YOU, BITCH!
Mariah was a bit taken aback with this outburst
Mariah: Oh no she didn’t just go there, hold my earrings while I beat this bitch down!
She began to take off her earrings and shoes, Cat and Jiz ended up holding her
Cory: Now, all things I can handle but you insulting my girl is just not happening, now GET THE F*** OUTTA MY HOUSE NOW BEFORE I CALL THE COPS ON YOU
He shoved her off the stairs and she fell, with her skirt up in the air, no one even bothered looking or caring, Cory shut the door and yelled from behind
Cory: AND IF YOU DON’T GET OFF MY PROPERTY WITHIN 3 SECONDS, I WILL CALL THE COPS OKAY?
Letonia left in less than 2 seconds.
A week has gone by and Des still hasn’t told anyone except her mother that she was engaged to Lami. She called everyone and arranged a date for one meeting; it was to be a sleepover. She arranged it for Friday for people to start coming by noon. She invited Lib and Krys, Cat and Jiz, Jackie, Symphony and Jamal, Cashmere and Tyra and of course Lami. The first people to arrive were Cashmere and Tyra
Tyra: Long time no see Des, how ya been?
She hugged Des after Des hugged Cash
Des: I been fine, things’ve been good lately, and you?
Tyra: I’m good, still single
Des: Ah don’t worry you’ll find the right mate in time. How are you Cash?
Cash: I did it
Des: Did what?
Cash: I told Shawn it was over, I got the restraining order and we’re truly over
Des jumped for joy and hugged Cash
Des: I am so, so, so happy for you girl, good for ya!
Cash: Couldn’t have done it without you
Des: No, at the end of the day, you did it not me. Now I gotta find you a good man now
Cash: Feel free to give them my number
All of them laughed
Des: Come on inside, Lami should be here soon, I asked him to get me a few things from the store
Des took them upstairs to show them where to put their stuff.
The next couple to come was Cat and Jiz, after which Jackie, Symphony and Jamal showed up, which had everyone fighting as to who’d carry the adorable baby. Jamal wanted to hang on to her, Cat was going to bite him for her, Jiz was threatening Jamal, Cash was offering bribes and Des was threatening to lock Jamal outside, Lami was going to put him in a headlock.
Anyways, at around 6pm, Lib and Krys showed up and came into the living room where everyone was except Des who was in the kitchen putting filtered water in Symphony’s water bottle. Tyra opened the door and as they came in, Lami looked up. Immediately the room got tense, everyone was looking at Lib and Lami alternately and no one said anything for a while, until Lib spoke
Lib [a little nervously]: Hi Lami how you been
Lami looked at him
Lami: I been good, how’ve you been Lib?
Lami came closer
Cat [quietly to Jiz]: Oh I can’t look [she buried her head in his shoulder]
Lami extended his hand and for the first time in more than a year, Lami and Lib did the street handshake. There was a huge sigh of relief, Krys, Jackie, and Cat had tears in their eyes, little Symphony began to smile and giggle. At that point, Des walked in to find them doing so [i.e. the handshake]
Des: Hi fellas
Des hugged Krys and extended her hand to Lib who shook it and smiled. Lami went and stood by her side holding her waist tenderly
Lami: Let me get that for you and hand it to Symphony. As she moved her hand, the ring sparkled
Cat: Dessie, I been meaning to ask you, where did you get that phat ring on your hand, it looks like real diamond
Des [coyly, looking at the ring]: It is
Everyone’s eyes popped open
Cat: I know you got money and all but it’ll take all your momma’s lifesavings to buy that
Des: I didn’t buy it, Lami did
All eyes turned on Lami, Lami pulled Des closer
Des: Umm guys, we got something to tell you……… we’re engaged
