Chapter 56
At Lami’s new house- his mom hadn’t come back from work, turns out she’s hanging with Des’ mom after work. Des and Lami were in the kitchen
Lami: Des, I hope you didn’t think there was anything going on between Krys and me, it was simply a platonic hug.
Des: I know Lami, I believe you
Lami: Cos she was just saying how sorry she was for trying to break us up and how she hopes me and her can be friends. That hug was the most awkward hug I’ve ever given anyone. I’ve had more fun hugging my granddad twice removed!
Des laughed
Des: Lami, its ok, I believe you, really. I mean if I didn’t believe you, would I do this?
She gives him a kiss, Olamide’s eyes looked stunned and stoned
Olamide [weakly]: N…n…no
Des: Exactly.
She noticed his eyes looking goofy
Des: Lami what’s it?
Lami: Its…its like I don’t think I’ve ever had u kiss me that way before!
Des [smiling confidently]: Yeah I know, my kisses are lethal weapons
Lami: You ain’t lying! They be getting me weak at the knees!
Des laughed
Des: You so crazy! By the way man, next time you’re leaving my house, don’t forget your dirty draws on my pillow!
She takes a pair of Superman boxer shorts from her bag and throws it to him
Des: Here I got it washed
Lami: I love you
Des: Yeah, I love me too
Both started laughing
Krys made it home safely and went upstairs to her room, she lay on her bed and began to cry. As much as she liked Des as a person, it really hurt her seeing the way he reacted with the hug, and how quick he was to jump to Des. Oh it was definitely over, and she had to get over him. She also thought of Lib- she’d told him they should be friends, and that was the one guy who had her back- even though he’s borderline obsessive.
Her phone rang- it was Lib as usual
Krys: What?
Lib: Is that how u answer ur phone?
Krys: Who you to tell me what to do?
Lib: I’m sorry, I was just wondering what was wrong with you?
Krys: Nothing,
Lib: Nothing? You told me you wanted us to just be friends!
Krys: Yeah I know I did. Its just that I think we got into this relationship under wrong circumstances
Lib: What you tryna say?
Krys: What I’m, saying is that I don’t think we are that compatible
Lib: We were both going through a rough patch, it was just natural that we turned to each other
Krys: Yeah I know
Lib: So I see, I was nothing but a distraction that took your mind of Lams right?
Krys: But…hey I’m not the one going crazy over a girl I know don’t want me!
Lib: At least I’m honest with myself in admitting I still care about Des and I don’t make any secret of it. I guess I was nothing but a Lami replacement for you right?
Krys: Lib…
Lib: You know what? Fine! I’ll do you one better, we can’t even be friends! You can stick with your pretending to be fine with Lami going with Des
Krys: Lib don’t say that!
Lib: I guess all those damn rumours were right- you really are a hoe! And to make it worse, you’re the kinda hoe who won’t admit she’s a hoe!
With that said, he hung up. Krys held the phone away from her ears staring at it like it was a strange object for a second and she began crying.
The next day, Jackie and Jamal were out in the mall. By then she had started showing but not too much, people who saw he would just think she ate too much or something. They just left the Dolce & Gabbanna store
Jackie: Thanks boo for helping me with my bags, I can still carry them
Jamal: I won’t want you doing that, you’re the mother of my child, I won’t want to stress you
They were walking along when
Jamal: Jackie, would you mind waiting for me in McDonalds, I think I just saw someone I need to talk to
He left before Jackie could say ok. Jackie took the bags Jamal had dumped on the floor and went into McDonalds to sit and wait for Jamal. After about half an hour he didn’t show up, she began to get worried. An hour went, two hours, three hours and by now, Jackie was very worried something had gone wrong. After waiting at McD’s for three and a half hours, she decided to take a taxi home. At this point she was crying. She got home and called Des
Des was at home with Lami when the phone rang. Des picked it up
Des: Hello?
Jackie: He left me
Des: J? who left you? What you talking about?
Jackie [in tears]: Jamal, he left me at the mall!
Des: WHAT?!
Jackie: Yeah he did! He left me hanging like a monkey
Des: How come?
Jackie: We were coming out of the D & G store in the mall when Jamal said he saw someone he knew and had to go and see them, and before I could say anything he’d dumped the bags on me and left. He told me to wait at McDonalds for him
Des: And?
Jackie: He didn’t come back! I waited for more than three hours, I had to take a taxi home!
Des: Damn! Have you called him?
Jackie: No I haven’t, I’m too upset
Des: Should I call him then?
Jackie: Yeah ok
Des: Aiight then, I’ll get back to you now
Jackie: Thank you Des
Des: Its ok J
They both hung up and Des began to dial Jamal’s number. Lams looked at her
Lams: Whats wrong?
Des: Jamal left Jackie at the mall waiting for three hours and I wanna know where he is
Lams: Aiight then
The phone began to ring, and it rang for long periods but Jamal did not pick it up. She tried about five times no reply. So she called Jackie back
Des: He didn’t pick up his phone
Jackie began to cry
Des: J don’t cry, I’m sure he has a good reason!
Jackie: Yeah right, this is not the first time you know!
Des: For real?
Jackie: Yeah whenever we go to the mall, he’s always ditching me, but he always came back that’s the thing. This is the one time he hasn’t
Des: Wow! How come you didn’t tell me?
Jackie: I didn’t want to bother you or anyone
Des: You keep saying that and I’ll keep shooting you down for it. you’re not bothering anyone ok? We’re girls, we’re meant to be there for each other
Jackie: I know, this whole pregnancy has me tripped out
Des: Totally understandable, but next time, no matter how tiny an issue yuou might think it is, you can always tell or talk to myself or Cat, heck even John and Lami will listen to you if we don’t.
Jackie laughed
Des: Don’t worry, we’re all here for you no matter what. How’s your mom coping with you being pregnant
Jackie: She’s a lot better now. She’s stopped seeing despair and gloom and she can’t wait till I have the baby. She’s looking forward to having the sound of kids in the house again- I mean yesterday she bought me a book of babies names along with the foreign name editions, saying that its never too early to consider the name for my child and her grandchild
Des: Aww that’s cool
Jackie: She wants to retire you know? And if she does, she says she’ll help me look after the baby while I go to college
Des: Wow! That’s a complete turn around!
Jackie: Yeah she pulled a 360 degrees on me!
Both girls laughed
Jackie: Well I gotta go now, I gotta pee
Des: Euugh, well go then. I’ll talk to you later
Jackie: Sure thing, thanx Des
Des: Its cool, aiight bye!
Both hung up.
Weeks passed and at this point, Jackie was 7½ months pregnant. Jamal did not really give her a good explanation for why he disappeared for so long back then. His erratic behaviour continued and Jackie was getting more and more worried.
She was at Cat’s house with Des. Lami and Jiz went to get Jiz’s car fixed.
Jackie: I can’t take it anymore!
Des: He’s continued doing a Houdini on you right?
Cat: A what?
Des: A disappearing act basically. Ever heard of the great magician Houdini?
Cat: No
Jackie: Anyway, yes he has and his explanations are getting even more bogus, today we were meant to be chilling at his house, but he told me his grandmother was coming over and he had to keep her company. And I know for a fact his last grandmother died early this year. I went to her burial with him
Cat: Maybe she came for a belated visit
Des: Don’t be crude. So J, what do you wanna do about him?
Jackie: I don’t know
Des: I think you should go and talk to him, now. In fact we all could go with you
Jackie: Would you?
Cat: Sure. I’ll write Jiz a note to let him know where we’ve gone
In 20 minutes time, they’d all gotten ready and left Cat’s house in Des’ car. They got to Jamal’s house in half an hour and saw his car parked outside, along with another strange car there. His parents were not home, and usually it was only his car in the driveway but not this time
Cat: His grandmother must have come long distance!
Jackie shot her a dirty look
They parked outside and all got down. They went to the front door to press the bell but they noticed the door was not closed. They entered tiptoeing with Des first, and began to see a trail of clothes along the hallway. No one came downstairs at all. The girls looked at each other and followed the trail. The trail led upstairs, and stopped in front of Jamal’s room, where they heard some noise Des and Cat could not even bear to look at Jackie’s face, but they each held her hand, and Cat opened Jamal’s door. They entered only to find some girl on top of Jamal. Jackie let out a scream and fainted. The two on the bed stopped and the girl jumped off Jamal, Cat was charging towards him
Cat: YOU SON OF A BITCH!
Des turned to Jackie who was on the floor and noticed blood coming out from between her legs
Des: Oh my God!
That’s it!
