Chapter 58
Jackie touched her baby’s finger and instinctively, Symphony Cyan clutched it. This brought Jackie even to more tears, her mom could do nothing but put her hand on Jackie’s shoulder.
Jackie: Look at her momma, she is so adorable!
Mrs. Carter: Just like you when you were born- you were the cutest thing to be born here
Jackie: Here?
Mrs. Carter: Yeah Jackie, this was the very hospital you were born
Jackie: Wow! Now I got Symphony Cyan here. Ma what am I gonna do?
Mrs. Carter: We’re gonna survive okay?
At that point, the doctor came in, saw Jackie and her mom and went over to them
Doctor: Hello Jackie, Mrs Carter
Mrs. Carter: Hello Dr. Cleveland
Jackie: Doctor, how’s my baby going to do?
Dr. Cleveland: Well, as she has made it through the night, her chances of survivial are increased and she is stable. Due to the speedy way in which you were brought in yesterday, you didn’t lose too much blood which could have caused the baby to experience permanent brain damage
Jackie and her mother looked relieved.
Jackie: So when can we go home
Doctor Cleveland: Well, not today. I still want to keep you both for some days, for you to heal properly and to check that the baby has no irregularities with her heart beat, like a heart murmur; and the rest of her.
Jackie: That’s like a full scale check up on Symphony
Dr Cleveland: Yes basically. So now I suggest that you return to your room and get some rest, and we’ll keep you both up to date on your baby’s progress
Mrs. Carter: Thank you doctor
The doctor smiled and went out with Jackie and her mother.
Meanwhile, last night when Des and Cat were sent home from the hospital by Jackie’s mother, Des went home and Des got some of her clothes, told her mom she was staying with Cat for the night and they went back to Cat’s. Lami had already come back and was playing Playstation with Jiz when the girls arrived
Lami: Where y’all been?
He didn’t look up from the game, neither did Jiz. The girls didn’t reply. Both guys looked up and noticed how Des and Cat looked, they had blood all over them, their eyes were red and puffy and they looked so tired they could have fainted in exhaustion any second.
Jiz: What happened?
Lami and Jiz got up and went to stand beside their women and helped them sit down, and as if on cue, Des and Cat began crying
Lami held Des close to him
Lams: Shhh, its ok, whatever it is, its going to be well
Des: I…I…I don’t…Oh my God!
She began crying even more
This went on for a while until the girls calmed down. Jiz and Lami got them some water, and Cat began to talk
Cat: Its…Its Jamal
Jiz and Lami: What?
Lami: What’d he do?
Des: Long story
Jiz: We got time
Des: Ok, its…its that lately, J…Jackie had been feeling a little abandoned by him
Cat: He’s left her in a mall more than once, and she began to get suspicious
Des: So we decided after y’all l…l…eft to go over to his house and see what’s up. When we got there, we saw his car and another car in the driveway. We went up to his house, no one answered the bell
Cat: Then we realised the door was unlocked
Des: And we went in, upstairs, following a trail of clothes left on the floor, up to Jamal’s room. We opened the door, and there he was
Jiz: Doing what?
Cat: Doing some other female, that is!
Jiz and Lami: What?
Des: Yeah and at that point, Jackie fell and fainted and there was blood all around her. We had to take her to Liberty for some emergency delivery, we called her mom who came and told us to go home and rest
Cat: I can’t believe it, I don’t think I’ve ever been that scared in all my life!
Lami and Jiz were in shock
Lami: You mean all this happened today?
Cat: Yeah, thanks to that idiot friend of yours, I am so gonna kill him!
Des: Not if I get to him first!
Jiz: Hold up ladies, not yet. This is not the time to be thinking about Jamal, don’t worry, he’ll get dealt with, right now, its all about Jackie and our godchild.
Lami: Yeah Jiz’s right, lets get some sleep now, first thing tomorrow, we’re going to Liberty.
Now back to the present, Cat, Des, Lami and Jiz did not get to the hospital until 11. They had raced to the store earlier to get something for Jackie and the baby. They got to the hospital desk and were directed to Jackie’s room. By then, she’d come back from visiting Symphony Cyan and was in her room with her mom.
Des knocked on the door
Jackie [from inside]: Come in
Des opened the door slightly and poked her head through
Des: Hi new mommy!
Jackie’s face broke out in smiles, and the smiles got wider as Des opened the door and everyone came in
Jackie: Hi y’all!
Cat: How you doing?
Jackie: I’m doing a lot better thank you
Lami: Hey J, had a rough night?
Jackie: Hmm you can say that again!
Lami: Ok, hey J had…
At that point, Des put her hand over his mouth, everyone laughed. They all said hello to J’s mother who thanked them all, and left the room.
Jiz: So you’re doing fine, how’s our godchild doing?
Jackie: Oh yeah, that’s true, she’s very well thank you,
Des: Where’s she?
Jackie: She’s in the premature babies’ ward, they’re still doing tests on her making sure she’s ok completely
Cat: No permanent damage?
Jackie: So far, none thankfully. Doctor said because I was brought here quickly, I didn’t lose that much blood.
Des: That’s good, so what did you name her?
Jackie [proudly]: Symphony Cyan Carter
At that point, Lami opened the card he had in his hand
Lami: Anyone got a pen?
Cat looked in her pocket and handed him one
Jiz: Man why do you need one?
Lami [seeming to cross out something from the card]: I was so sure her name would be Olamide that I’d already put her name there
Everyone burst into laughter
Jackie: Boy you crazy!
Lami looked up
Lami: Nah, jus kiddin! Now spell Cyan for me again?
Jackie: Its C-Y-A-N
Lami: Aiight then, here you go [handing Jackie the card] from me
Des: Hey! I bought that
Lami: But I signed it, thanks honey [he blew Des a kiss]
Des: I got your honey right her
Lami: Yes you do
Everyone just smiled at Des and Lami, they were too much too cute.
Cat: Anways, so when do we get to see the beauty?
Jackie: Later today. When the doctor is done, he’ll let us know asap
Des: Aww that is so cool! I’m glad you’re ok after all that drama yesterday
Jackie: Yeah I know
At that point, Jiz tugs Lami’s collar
Jiz: A yo c’mon and lets go get some soda
Lami: But…
Jiz: Dude, lets go now!
Lami [reluctantly]: Aiight then
As they went out
Lami [grudgingly]: I don’t see why we had to go
Jiz: Trust me when you’ve hung out with these girls since first grade, you get to know when to take a cue and beat it
They left the room leaving Jackie, Des and Cat
Des: So has he contacted you at all?
Jackie: Not at all, I know my momma won’t even let him step within 10 miles of this hospital. I can’t believe he’d do that, after all we’ve been through!
Cat: I know, he is so dead!
Jackie: Does anyone else know?
Des: Only the guys, we had to tell them. We’ve not even called anyone else, Cash and the rest to even tell them you’ve had your baby.
Jackie: I don’t want anyone else to know yet, let us get out of the hospital first and get all settled down and stuff.
Cat: Aiight then.
At that point, a nurse came in
Jackie: Hi Nurse
Nurse: Hi Jackie, Dr Cleveland wanted me to tell you that its ok for you to come and see your baby now
Jackie: Ok thanks, can my friends come too?
Nurse: I don’t see why not.
Jackie got up from the bed followed by Des and Cat and left the room. They found the guys waiting outside
Des: I thought y’all went to get some sodas?
Lami [face scrunched up]: No, Jiz here was lecturing me about baby canals and stuff about pushing melons through a hole the size of a grape
The three girls and nurse burst of laughing
Jiz: I had to, this young cat needs to be schooled ‘bout babies
Lami: I didn’t need that much schooling. Why you guys out by the way?
Jackie: The nurse says we can go in and see Symphony now. Wanna come?
Jiz & Lami: Of course!
They jumped up and followed the girls talking along the way. They got to the premature babies’ wards and the nurse stopped them
Nurse: You’ll all have to wear protective gloves, gowns and hats to cover yourself and to prevent the babies from catching anything from you or vice versa.
She handed them some gloves gowns and hats which they all put on
Lami: Des, wanna play doctor and nurses?
Des: Boy you crazy, don’t even think it
Nurse looked at them
Cat: Ignore them nurse, can we go in now?
Nurse: Sure
They all went in. Jackie led the way to Symphony Cyan’s crib- the doctor was standing by it
Jackie: Hi doctor!
Dr Cleveland: Hello Jackie
Jackie: I came with my friends to see how Symphony is doing
Dr Cleveland: She’s fine, we’re still waiting for results of the test, hopefully everything will be fine
Jackie: Thank you doctor
Dr Cleveland: I’ll leave you all alone.
He nodded to Cat, Jiz, Des and Lami, and went out. There were a few parents in there, and nurses. Jackie & Co came closer to Symphony’s crib. They all went around the crib
Jackie: Hi cutie, I brought some people here to see you. These are not just people, these are your godparents
Des talked to Symphony first
Des: Hi honey, this is your first godmother Des talking. Glad to have you here with us! We want you to get stronger to come home to us. I wanna introduce you to your other godparents- you have Jiz, your first god father, Cat- your second godmomma- those two are gonna drive you crazy with their bickering
Everyone laughed
Des: They been going out since forever, then you got Lami, he’s your second godfather- what can I say beautiful, you got the best set of godparents ever!
Then Cat
Cat: Hi ya, this is godmother Cat talking. Look I’ll be the one teaching you how to apply ur make up so you don’t look like Little Richard, but like Halle Berry- Des don’t know much about that. But if you want help with homework, call her. Help with boys, call me. I love you precious!
Then Lami
Lami: Hi Symphony, its Lami here. Don’t laugh ok, I know my name’s weird enough already. You’ll know me when you get to see me, I’m the cute godfather. I’ll let you do things your momma won’t le you do ok? I’ll teach you how to drive an automatic, love you very much
Then Jiz
Jiz: Hey, this is your first goddaddy Jiz, don’t mind Lami, I’m way finer than him ok? Plus I’m the one with money, he’ll teach you how to drive my automatic. PS don’t drive in Lami’s busted up Pinto, that car can do some damage!
Lami: Hey! I don’t drive a Pinto, he’s lying!
Jiz: Whatever, anyways get better and we’ll come and see you everytime, and to help your momma with you ok? Lots of love
Jackie looked at them all and she was about to like cry. There she was worrying about her baby when she got 4 friends who’ll probably love that child more than she will
Jackie: See I chose your godparents well
Des: Yeah so get outta here real soon so we can all spoil you rotten!
Jiz: No doubt
They stayed for a while until when they were told to go by the nurses. They also went around saying hello to as much babies as they could, talking to parents quietly. This made Jackie feel very good.
They left the babies’ ward and went back to Jackie’s room.
Now where is Jamal? He didn’t know what to do. He was still with Kelly and she didn’t seem to want to leave. His girl or now ex girl just gave birth prematurely to his child and all that ish that happened in such a short time. He was at Frostys with Kelly thinking. He was so lost in thought, that he didn’t notice Krystina and Lib come in, until when
Kelly: Krystina!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Krystina heard someone yelled her name, and she came closer and saw it was Kelly, an old friend of hers
Krystina: Kelly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Both ran to hug each other, snapping Mal out of his thought and Lib wondering what was up. When Lib saw Mal at the table, he came closer
Krystina: How you doing girl, long time!
Kelly: I know its been 5/6 years now?
Krystina: I know! What are you doing here?
Kelly: I’m on a date with my man
And she indicated Mal
Krystina: Jamal?
Kelly: You know him?
Krystina: You can say that again!
Kelly: Such a small world!
Krystina: Who you telling?
Lib looked stunned
Krystina: oh by the way, Kelly, meet Lib
Kelly: Your boyfriend?
Krystina: Yeah, kinda
Now it was Mal’s turn to look stunned. He looked at Lib who just smiled sheepishly
Kelly: Y’all come sit at our table with us
Krystina: Ok
They all sat down each couple opposite the other couple
Lib: So what’s been up Jamal? You seem to have been busy lately!
Jamal: So have you, and yeah a lot of things have been going down
Lib: So does Jackie know?
Kelly: Oh you mean that pregnant chick?
Krystina: Yeah, she’s our friend
Kelly: Yeah she finally discovered Mal was with me not her
Krystina and Lib: What?!
Kelly: Yeah, about time! She caught me and Mal together, fainted, was losing blood and two other bitches came and took her out, all in some big drama pretending its something seriously wrong, and one of the crazy bitches threw something at my baby, that’s why he has that crazy ass bump on his forehead
In all these, Mal held his hand to his head in disbelief as to how Kelly was talking about Jackie, his baby, Cat and Des and the way she dismissed the whole thing as a joke. Krystina and Lib were open mouthed in disbelief as to how cold and uncaring Kelly described what seems to be a serious situation.
Lib [looking at Mal]: How the hell dare you?
Krystina: Kelly, do you realised all you just said?
Kelly: What?
Krystina: Cos of you Jackie could probably be in serious trouble, she may have lost her baby, the one she’s been carrying for 7 ½ months, and those two bitches you name are Cat and Des, and if anything they sure ain’t bitches
Kelly: What? I don’t care, it got nothing to do with me, plus he’s my man not hers, I didn’t ask him to be with me he came to me, and I’ll be damned if I let him go. Look lets change the subject this ain’t important now. Y’all want something to eat, I’m starving
Krystina: Yeah lets go order it from the counter
Her and Kelly got up and went
Lib: Well congratulations man, you managed to screw your life up for a cold callous bitch
Mal: Please don’t give me a speech now. You ain’t one to talk! Your life ain’t exactly cruising now is it? What’s up with Krys introducing you as her man?
Lib: Anyways, do you know which hospital Jackie’s in?
Mal: Not a clue
Lib: None?
Mal: Nope
Lib: man you’re screwed for real
