Chapter 48
Lams: Aiight then, but you gotta get dressed warmer than that, I can’t let you come out in the cold and freeze to death
Des: Lams, cold is the least of our worries right now. I’ll get something at the airport. lets take the black Jeep with the tinted windows
Lams looked at her he was so surprised as how she’s taking this. He knew Krys would never want to ride this storm with him at all if it came to it
Lams: Its “our” worries now?
Des: Get in the car first, then we’ll talk
Lams: Yes ma’am.
They got in and Des checked for her usuals i.e. keys, wallet, credit cards e.t.c. she chose to use this car for some reasons, firstly, the tinted windows prevented anyone on the street from seeing who was in the car and if at that time there happened to be a CVG member on the road, the last thing she wanted to do is some early morning car chase; it was a good car for speeding and dodging; and if she wanted to give Lami a goodbye kiss, she wanted it in that private space, just in case, giving him one at the airport was too hard i.e. no time to.
When she finally got on the road, she answered Lami’s question
Des: Lams, I need to talk to you now, cos I don’t know what today is going to hold for us, and I wanna say this before its too late.
Lami: Go on, I’m listening
Des: I’ve finally decided to break it off with Lib. I don’t think I can handle his attitude anymore
In his heart Lams was so happy but all he could do was just nod his head
Des: And no matter what today, I want you to be with me, like you were supposed to
Lams: Wow! To say my dream came true today is an understatement, but I want us to talk like this under better circumstances, preferably when my life is not in danger
Des: Our life- cos whatever happens to u affects me and I hope its vice versa
Lams looked at her and at that point could have cried
Lams: thank you Des, and I promise you, once we’re both sure we’re safe, I’ll officially ask you to be my girlfriend. But on the dl- you always were
Des smiled
Des: Its cool, we’re unofficial for now, but the most important thing is that we’re a “we” if you get me
Lams: point taken and totally understood
He put his hand over hers- the one she had on the gear and both smiled. They changed the topic and were approaching the airport soon.
However, something else was going on.
At the airport, there were several plans going down to stop Lami getting on any flight out of the city, only way he’d be leaving was in a body bag. You know by now its CVG. They figured that by now he already knew what was in store for him, someone would have told him, he was still on their death list. The six guys involved in this- their names are not so important, but will give u tags to identify them. They were CJ, RL, T, TK, JC, JJ. CJ, TK and JJ were dressed as cleaners at the airport, to go on duty in the departures area; RL, T and JC were security men in that area. All had a gun strapped discreetly on to them, and carried what looked like earphones but is some hi tech communication device. The guys were mainly stationed at the departures to New York area. RL was talking to them all
RL: We know why we here so no need to waste time, if anyone catches sight of the n***a eliminate him
CJ (via the communication device): What?
RL: It means kill him if you see him you idiot!
T: Aiight then. What else do we know about that fool?
RL: We know that by now, he knows we’re after him and sources tell me that he is leaving today, we don’t know what time, but if he’s half as smart as I think he is, he’ll be on the first plane back to New York.
TK: Yeah dude that gave us the info on him being around was like he’ll probably come with a girl or so
JC: What do we do to her
TK: He ain’t really say, and I’m not really one for killing chicks right now, but she ain’t gon get hurt unless she interferes in our business with that fool
CJ: She’s a woman, of course she will
TK: Then let it be her own fault- I take no prisoners
RL: Y’all shut up and don’t go all GI Joe on me now aiight? Now that we know all we have to know, lets scatter and get in place
All 5: Ok then.
And everyone took position.
Finally at the airport, Lami got down when the car stopped and Des got down as well. She was walking to join him in front of the car when he came over to her side, put her against the driver’s side car door and gave her a kiss
Lami: Just in case I never get to do that for a while
Des just smiled and he pulled her close, pulled his hood over his head tighter and they went into the airport.
In the airport, TK spotted a fine looking girl getting some tickets at the counter, and he was about to start hollering at her when he noticed a hooded figure standing next to her looking like he did not belong and was in a hurry. He initially thought the guy wanted to rob his ‘honey’ when she turned to talk to him and he heard his voice and something clicked in him…
Meanwhile, Des was at the counter with Lami beside her, getting the ticket.
Lady @ Counter: how may I help you?
Des: yes, erm, I would like to get two tickets to New York
Olamide looked at her- why the hell does she want two, he was the only one going right?
Olamide: Why two?
Des: Wait and see
Lady @ Counter: Single or return tickets
Des: Two single please
Lady @ Counter: What names should I make them out to?
Des: One for a Ms Deshone Parker, the other for Mr. Olamide Faison
Olamide gave her this wtf kinda look
Olamide: Des you crazy?
Des (turning to him): Do you really think I’mma let you get on that plane knowing anything can happen and I’ll lose you? We ride or die together no matter what
Lady @ Counter: how would you like to pay- cash or credit
Des: Credit card please
She hands her card over
Olamide takes it from her hand before the Lady could take it
Olamide: I’m not gonna let you do this Des
Des: Watch me
She pulls him closer and kisses him right there and then, his grip loosens on the card and she takes it from him, slides it over the counter to the lady who, just shook her head smiling and ran the payment up. Des did not stop kissing Lami until the payment was made and then she pulled away
Des (with a smile): Too late already done
Lami did not know what to say
Lami: Uh uh, whatever, lets just go
The lady gave them the tickets and they began making their way to departures
At that time, TK who’d seen Lami first had contacted the others and told them that Lami was heading to the departures with a female, to board the 7:15am flight to New York. The guys began closing in.
Meanwhile at home, Lib got up and he had a feeling of excitement in his heart. Finally if those fools handled their business well, Lami would be out of him and Des’ relationship and she’ll be all his. He decided to give Des a call in the morning acting like nothing’s wrong with their relationship and to apologise for acting stupid. He called her home phone and expected her to pick up sounding groggy and all, but no one answered. He tried her cell phone
Des’ cellphone rang and she looked at the number, she saw Lib’s- ‘too early to deal with him’ she thought and she cut the phone off and put it on silent tone.
Lami: Who was that?
Des: Who else do you think is crazy enough to call me at this time?
Lami: Lib?
Des: Yeah
Lami: Don’t worry it is almost over now
As they came closer to departure, Des felt uneasy, like something wasn’t right or she was forgetting something. She kept looking around and felt she was being watched. She kept shaking herself back to reality, and Lami mistaking this for her feeling cold, pulled her closer towards him in a tighter hug. He also felt something wasn’t quite right as well but he didn’t want to say anything to scare Des. I think he kinda knew what it was…
Meanwhile, Lib was getting a little worried as Des turned her phone off and she isn’t picking up her home phone either.
The 6 CVG guys could all see Lami within view but wanted to get closer to him before shooting him- Des somewhat seemed to block their shot of Lami
RL: Yo what do we do about that broad, can’t do anything with her blocking!
TK: I know we gotta do something soon, cos they can get lost easily in the crowd
CJ: I think we know what we have to do
T: Take her out as well?
CJ: Yup
JJ: Can’t we do it some other way?
TK: Man don’t chicken out now, CJ’s right, we gotta get her too.
At that point, Des moved closer to Lami further blocking him, and next thing, a gun shot is heard and Lami felt Des scream and fall. At that point his eyes caught RL’s eye, and all hell broke loose. Olamide sank to the floor and began yelling
Olamide: SOMEBODY CALL 911! DES IS HURT!
Once the gunshot was fired, the whole airport went into chaos, about 10 people dialed 911 at once, people were screaming running and heading for the exits and the whole place was confused.
As he fell to the floor, and was holding Des, he felt some thing pierce his skin and felt blood coming out of his leg- he’d been shot with a silent gun.
People and Paramedics gathered around, no one really noticed he was bleeding as Lami kept holding Des tightly, even though he himself was beginning to feel faint.
Des had been put on a stretcher and he was hobbling with the stretcher when someone noticed he was bleeding too
Paramdics 1: We gotta get you on a stretcher stats
Olamide: I’m not going unless I’m with her
He indicated Des who was totally unconscious now and had been hooked on to tubes and stuff. The paramedics had to promise him that he and Des would be side by side regardless all through the way, but first hospital. Both have to undergo some serious operations, Lami for his leg to remove the bullet, and Des to remove the bullet which missed her appendix by a few inches.
Jiz and Cat were over at his, that day just chilling, they’d just got up from bed and Cat was in the kitchen making breakfast and Jiz was in the living room when all of a sudden, he heard Cat scream and drop something which broke. Jiz jumped up and ran over to the kitchen
Jiz: A yo what’s up?
Cat could not speak but her hand was shaking as she indicated the TV, Jiz turned the volume up and the news that broke was
Newscaster: Today at this airport around 7am, a shooting occurred which involved two teenagers as victims. These teenagers were on the way to the departures to board the 7:15 plane to New York City. One victim the more seriously injured of the two, has been identified as a young female between the age of 16-19, and the other, a male around the same age. Both are black and it is believed that the crime is a gang related one……Oh just, in, we have the names of the victims. The female has been identified as Ms Deshone Parker and the male has been identified as Mr. Olamide Faison. They have been taken to the Mount Sinai Memorial hospital for treatment. That’s all we have for now, but we will keep you updated
At the end of the broadcast, Jiz sunk onto a chair, not knowing whether to cry to scream- Cat had already began bawling and he could not help her cos he was hurting real bad inside as well, and that hurt him even more, him being unable to help her.
At that point, everyone heard the news, Jackie and Mal were at her house and when the broadcast was ended, she fainted.
