Chapter 59
Still with Lib & Mal and the girls. They hadn’t returned from getting their orders so Lib and Mal were still talking
Mal: I know! I just don’t know what to do!
Lib: I don’t know what you can do either. Have you tried calling the others to see if they can give u any info?
Mal: I can bet u they won’t even stay on the phone long enough to say hi once they know its me
Lib: Why?
Mal: Didn’t you hear Kelly, Cat threw a lamp at me, Des was the one carrying Jackie, and I can bet you as they’re involved Lami and Jiz will definitely know by now and ain’t no way they’ll wanna talk to me
Lib: I know! So there’s nothing you can do. But you can try, at least let it not be held against you that you made no effort
Mal: I think that’ll be the last thing they’ll be holding against me with all that has happened
Lib: You could like try every hospital in the city and ask if anyone was recently admitted by the name Jackie Carter
Mal: I thought of it, but what if she wasn’t even admitted with her real name?
Lib: Dude you are so negative! Every idea I got about this you’ve shot me down. Oh well at least I tried
Mal: Whatever. So you’re Krys boyfriend, how did that happen?
Lib: Well its like we’ve always been cool, and since the drama that went down between me, Des and Lami she’s been the only one still talking to me, and from there we became kinda closer until now it seems I can’t do without her in my life
Mal: You talked to Des?
Lib: Des and I haven’t spoken since the day I saw her in hospital, and we didn’t even really speak
Mal: You gonna talk to her anytime soon?
Lib: I don’t think she has any interest in talking to me anymore
Mal: She still cool with Krys?
Lib: Krys hasn’t said anything about Des acting funny with her, but then that’s cause like me, she hasn’t seen or spoken to her in months.
Mal could only sigh. So much drama and he wasn’t even in college yet.
The girls came back, Kelly sat beside Jamal and pushed him his food
Kelly: Here baby, eat something, you haven’t eaten anything today at all
Mal: I’m not hungry
Kelly: Aw c’mon, you still upset about whats happened? Don’t worry things will be fine, you got me now, nothing else should be worth worrying about
Lib threw Jamal a look as if to say ‘you dissed Jackie for this?’ Mal could only look down and sigh. Krys could only shake her head. Now she remembered why she’d not spoken to Kelly for almost 6 years- she’s a bitch.
Now at the hospital, Des, Lami, Jiz and Cat were still with Jackie. Her mom had gone home [on doctors’ orders] to rest. Everone had promised J’s mom that they weren’t leaving until she came back.
Everyone was talking quietly/sleeping because J was asleep [she was getting tired] when a quiet knock was heard on the door, Jiz crept up to open it. It was a woman carrying a tiny baby basket with some documents in there
Jiz: Hi, can we help you?
Woman: Oh hi, I’m Doris, the hospital birth registrar? I’m looking for a Jackie Carter, she just delievered a baby here
Jiz: Oh come on in
He opened the door for her, Des carefully shook Jackie up. Jackie blinked several times and sat up yawning
Doris: Oh I’m sorry to disturb you Jackie, but my name is Doris I’m the hospital birth registrar. I’m here to help you fill out your baby’s birth certificate
Jackie: Birth certificate? Oh, alright then.
Doris came closer to the bed, took out some papers out of the baby crib and showed Jackie.
Doris: Now we got two kinds of birth certificate, we got the colour specific one that is blue for a boy, and pink for a girl; or the colour neutral one, the traditional white one
Jackie: Guys come closer and help me decide
All of them came
Lami: the white one’s nice
Cat: The pink too
Jackie: Yeah but I don’t want to give my baby her first stereotype by deciding pink is for girls and blue is for boys
Cat: True
Jackie: So we all agreed on white?
All of them [except Doris]: Yeah
Jackie: So white it is then
Doris took the one they chose and all details of Symphony’s birth had already been filled [on all of them, so whichever one they chose Doris will not have to write some of the key stuff e.g. date of birth, time, hospital which can be hard to remember]. All Doris had to do was get a pen and paper and write down the baby’s name, and her parents name and details
Doris: Ok, the deal is this ones I showed you were samples. i’ll be typing some details which I’ll be getting now from Jackie into the final copy which will be photocopied and laminated for you.
Jackie: Ok
Doris: Ok, can I get the baby’s name?
Jackie: Symphony Cyan Carter
Doris wrote it down
Doris: Got that, but just check my spellings as I go along ok? Now can I have your full name and your occupation
Jackie: Full name is Jackie Carter and my occupation student
Doris wrote it down
Doris: Now can I get the baby’s father’s name and his occupation?
At that point, silence fell over everyone. They all knew the question was going to come but they were all hoping it was going to be later or that it wouldn’t by some divine miracle be asked. Jackie looked down and could not say anything
Doris: Jackie?
Then Doris understood why she hadn’t answered
Doris: Is the biological father in the baby’s life?
Jackie: I don’t want him to be, so can I not declare him on my baby’s birth certificate
Doris: Its fine. As long as you know who it is
Jackie: We all know him
Doris: Its fine, you can leave it blank for now
Jackie: Thanks
Doris: Ok that’s all I need from you. I already have the time and date given to me. I’ll just go get it processed now and I’ll give one copy to you
Jackie: Thanks
Doris made for the door
Doris: I’ll see you later Jackie. Bye guys
All of them: Bye!
And she exited
They all turned to look at Jackie
Des: Why didn’t you put Jamal’s name on the certificate?
Jackie: Cos I don’t want to after all he’s done to me
Jiz: But then Jackie, Symphony is still his baby regardless
Jackie: I know, I just don’t want him to have anything to do with her. If he’s busy messing around with other females then he can keep doing so. My baby and I will be fine by ourselves
Cat: C’mon Jackie. We all understand he did you wrong but still
Jackie: But nothing, he never wanted me to have Symphony. He told me to abort my baby initially. He even took me to a clinic to get it done but I backed out at the last moment
Des: J take some time and think this through carefully
Jackie: I have thought this out carefully and I decided I didn’t want him on it.
Des: Aiight then, if that’s what you want
At that point, Lams got up
Lams: I’m getting hungry people, y’all want something to eat?
Jackie: They should be serving lunch soon though
Lams: I don’t like hospital food, and they’ll be feeding only you remember, unless if I fall pregnant or hurt myself they won’t admit me as a patient and feed me
Jackie: As a new mother, they serve you a special meal which is really, really good
Lams stood in thought for a while
Lams: Hmmm I’m considering the possibility of me getting pregnant now. Des lets go get freaky so we can have a baby
Everyone laughed
Des: You needs to be in a hospital for sure- a mental hospital!
Everyone laughed
Lams: Seriously, I could go for some serious Frosty’s food now
Des: how about we actually go? We can ask Tyra, Mia and Cashmere to meet us there so they can come and see their godchild too
Jackie: That sounds like a good idea
Des: You gonna be fine here?
Cat: She’ll be ok, Jiz and I are here
Des: That’s why I’m asking
Cat shot her a dirty look
Cat: What you tryna say?
Des: just be careful and don’t let Jiz piss you off so you don’t put him in hospital
Cat laughed
Cat: Fine!
Lams: What’d y’all wanna eat?
Jackie, Cat, and Jiz all wanted to talk at once, Lams held up his hand
Lams: Hold up, y’all better write it down or else I’ll forget
They found a pen and paper and wrote their orders down.
Des: Ok y’all we should be back in an hour and a half’s time
Lams: y’know how those dudes at Frosty’s are slow
Jackie: Aiight then, later y’all!
Des and Lams: Bye!
And they left
