Chapter 60
Des and Lami went into the parking lot and located Des’ car.
Des: Baby why don’t you drive?
Lami: Ok then, get in
They entered the car and as they got in, Lams pulled her closer and gave her a long kiss
Lams: You have no idea how much I been dying to do that, that’s why I wanted us to go together
Des smiled
Des: I know, I read ur mind, I just didn’t wanna say anything
Lami [smiling back at her]: I love the way you read my mind
He turned back to the steering wheel and began to drive. Des turned the radio up and the song playing was Donnell Jones’ ‘You know that I love you’, Lami started singing to the song, Des could only laugh
Des: Lami shut up, you’re spoiling the song!
Lami: What you tryna say, I can’t sing?
Des: Baby I’m not tryna say it, I am saying it!
Lami: Ha ha you got jokes. But on the real tho, you know that I love you right?
Des: I know baby, I love you too.
After a while, they got to Frostys. Des was laughing at what Lami was saying and she walked in saying ‘boy you so crazy, be slaying me with all your silliness’
In Frosty’s, Mal, Lib, Krys, and Kelly were still there talking that kinda thing, when they saw Olamide and Des walk in. Lami for some reason chose that moment to plant a kiss on Des’ lips. That hit home for Lib and Krys. Des and Lami hadn’t seen the others yet.
Des and Lami went to the counter to wait in line when she thought she heard Krys voice, and she asked Lami to do the orders.
Lami: Why?
Des: Baby can you give them our orders, I thought I saw someone
Lami: I don’t wanna do this alone
Des: Don’t be such a big baby
Lami: But c’mon whoever it is can wait, you don’t wanna leave me here like this, you know I’ll screw it up anyway
Des laughed
Des: Aiight then knowing you, you’ll probably give cheese to Jiz when you know he wanted a burger with everything except cheese
Lami: He acts like he’s lactose intolerant, when I know he ain’t. he likes milk but hates cheese
Des: He’s probably Lami intolerant, and not everyone likes cheese, especially one that smells like your feet
Both of them laughed
They got all the orders [correctly] and made to get out, when
Krys: Des?
Des and Lami turned around. Des’ eyes widened to see Krys, especially with Lib, Lami’s eyes hardened when he saw Lib, but he said nothing. Des almost dragged Lami over with her
Des: Krys? How have you been?
Krys: I’ve been fine [smiling] Hi Lami
Lami [drily]: Hi
And he looked away
Krys: Where have you been? Its been ages since I last saw or heard from you
Des: Y’know since the incident which almost got me killed [she stared at Lib], I have been taking life a lot easier. I called your house several times to invite you over but your momma always said you went out
Krys: I been busy lately
Des: I bet you have
Krys: I heard about Jackie, how’s she doing?
Des: She’s very well. Krys, I don’t think I wanna discuss Jackie with you now with Mal here especially with…
Des looked closer at the girl who sat beside Mal, she looked familiar
Des [turning to Kelly]: Haven’t I seen you somewhere before?
Kelly [oblivious to reality]: Yeah we have met kinda, I’m Kelly Mal’s new girlfriend- well we have been together for a while now
Des [looking at Mal with eyes that could kill]: Oh is that so?
Kelly: Yeah
Des: Oh now I remember you, you were the girl my other best friends and I found on top of him, the day his pregnant now ex-girlfriend fainted and almost lost their baby. Ain’t life a bitch
Mal wanted to start speaking. Des held up her hand
Des: Save it for someone who cares, just looking at you makes me so sick. I guess they’re right when they say it takes a male to make a baby but a real man to stay and raise the baby.
Lami [tightening his grip on Des]: Baby its ok, lets go
Krys: Which hospital is she in?
Des: That we can’t tell you yet, for reasons best known to us. But give me a call later on and we’ll talk
Krys: Aiight then, its good seeing you Des, alive and well
Des: Same here girl, been missing ur face, don’t be a stranger to my number ya hear?
Krys laughed
Krys: Aiight
Des: Ok, we gotta go now, later Krys
Krys: Bye Des, Bye Lami
Lami [drily as he turned away]: Bye
Des and Lami walked away, with Lami pulling Des closer to himself.
Krys looked at Mal
Krys: Way to go buddy! You sure are going to make an impression on your baby ain’t ya? Your baby momma hates your guts and I can bet you the baby’ll hate you too
Mal: Krys, just shut the f*** up aiight? This is none of ya business!
Lib: Hey don’t be talking to my girl like that!
Mal: Then tell her to get her nose outta my business aiight? And please, the only reason she’s your girl is because Des hates you for trying to kill her!
Krys: Man shut up , you know that’s a lie. Don’t be taking out all your incompetence on Lib aiight? No one asked you to cheat and get caught cheating on Jackie ok? Its your fault, no one else’s!
Mal: Stop behaving like a prissy lil missy cos you know what, you’re ain’t that, so don’t act like your shit don’t stink! You’re messed up, Lib’s messed up, I’m messed up, we all messed up!
Kelly: All except me!
Lib, Mal, Krys: SHUT THE F**K UP!
At that Mal, got up
Mal: Even though my life’s screwed, at least I got the nerves to admit to myself that yeah what I did is wrong, instead of lying to everyone and myself, unlike you two. I’m getting outta here, rather be by myself than be among you lot!
With that he walked away, and drove home.
Krys and Lib got up
Kelly: Where y’all going?
Lib: Away from here, wherever
Kelly [in a whiny voice]: So who’s going to take me home then?
Krys and Lib looked at each other like ‘after all that’s being said, this is the best she can say?’
Krys: Bye Kelly
Her and Lib walked out of Frosty’s leaving Kelly there by herself pouting.
Lami and Des in the car. He hadn’t said anything for a while, Des could see he was very angry, so she’d left him for a couple of minutes to let him cool off. He was driving so she put her hand over his i.e. the one on the gear. He smiled but didn’t look at her
Des: Babe I know seeing Lib got you pissed, but you can’t let him get to ya everytime you see him!
Lami: I know, its just that the nerve of him sitting down there acting like he knew nothing really got me fired. And to think we used to be madd close
Des: Remember what we talked about- letting go?
Lami: I’mma let go, but things can never be the same between me and him
Des: I know, I understand………so should we tell Jackie we saw Jamal?
Lami: I’m not sure about that. I think telling Jiz and Cat later would be fine, but I think he’s the last person she’d want to hear we saw
Des: I guess, but not telling her would be keeping stuff from her and I’d rather tell her now than wait till later, cos at some point, she will see him and……I don’t know, why’d Jamal gotta go screw up now huh? Why couldn’t he have been a man like you or Jiz?
Lami looked at her
Lami: So you think I’m a man now huh?
Des: Only a real man can go through all that you have and still come out unbroken, oh yeah you’re the man!
Lami laughed, as if on cue, Alicia Keys ‘A Woman’s Worth’ began playing. Des just laughed
Now, when Jamal got home, he went upstairs to his room. His mom tried to talk to him but he basically blew her off [said he had a headache and wanted to be alone]. He went in his room and sat on the bed. he got up and went to a drawer with the initial J on it. that was where he had all his “ Jackie” stuff. He took the drawer out and put it on his bed. He read a couple of letters he wrote to Jackie the first time he saw her, letters he never posted but she saw it later. He read in it how much he liked her and thought she was so damn fine, and how he could see himself being with her forever. He took out pictures of Jackie, him and Jackie at the mall, in school at home, at a park, the day he got her all dressed up for a posh restaurant and how “country” they were acting. He remembered the time he was sick and Jackie cut short her summer just to come back and look after him, the time he had an injury and some guy tried to jack him, he remembered Jackie going after the guy with a bat and going all “Matrix” on him. He was still going over all these photos when he saw like a graduation certificate type paper in the drawer. He took it out and broke the seal and read it. It was a forever love promise he’d made to her, and they’d both signed it. In it, he’d promised to love her always, never break her heart and to stay faithful and true to her no matter what. Underneath where he got the paper, there was an A4 size envelope. He took that one out, and opened it. In it was a scan of Jackie’s unbaby at 6months. That was just too much for him- he broke down and cried
Lib and Krys
Lib: How dare Mal be talking like that, I used to respect the dude, but now, he needs to get his life in order
Krys: I know, be blaming you for all his mishaps
Lib: I know, and what about Des and Lami today huh?
Krys: So weird seeing them together. I tried to say hi to Lami but he ignored me almost
Lib: At least he managed to answer you, Des didn’t as much as look at me except once when she gave me some really dirty look
Krys: I wonder what’s up with that?
Lib: She’s got an attitude problem
Krys: She was nice to me
Lib: Hmm hmm
Krys decided to drop it as she could see he was going into one of his ‘Des’ moods
Back at the hospital, Lami and Des were just arriving
Jackie: Finally, y’all are back!
Des: Sorry we took long, we had a minor delay on the way. Hope you ain’t eaten yet
Jackie: I was about to eat the lunch they gave me when Jiz carried the tray away saying to wait for you
Cat: Then next thing, he started eating the food!
Jiz [mouth full of the dessert he was having]: Yo, this is some crazy cheesecake, y’all should try this!
Cat: We would but you ate it all!
Jiz: Hey you snooze, you lose!
Des: Aiight y’all come eat, lets leave Jizzy boi alone
John looked up
Jiz: Des, don’t ever call me Jizzy boi again! It makes me sound like a pretty boy, and I’m not a pretty boy!
Des: You got that right!
Jiz: Hey!
Des: Finish Jackie’s food and come eat
At that Des and Lami began giving everyone’s food out. Jiz still ended up with a burger with cheese cos Jackie all of a sudden decided she was not allowed cheese because of Symphony so she made Jiz exchange with her- needless to say, he wasn’t too happy about that
After everyone had eaten, the boys decided to go for a walk, leaving the girls to talk.
Cat: Damn Jackie, pregnancy really made you fill out! No more skin and bones, you look like a woman
Des: For real, I mean before, you used to have them 'small and humble' but now you can confuse them with the Himalayas, what’s your size now- 40Z?
All three of them laughed
Jackie: Its not easy carrying them around that I’ll tell you
Des: So did the labour hurt?
Jackie: For real?
Des: Lay it on me
Jackie: It hurts a lot. The pain is indescribable. Think of the worst period pains you ever got, and multiply it by 50- then you’ll get a little close to the level of pain it is
Cat and Des winced
Cat: That’s it, Jiz and I if we ever consider babies, we’ll adopt
Jackie: But despite it, when the baby comes out, its all a distant memory in your mind
Cat: Wow, congrats for hacking the whole experience
Des: Speaking of something to hack, guess who Lami and I ran into at Frostys
Jackie: Who?
Des: Krys, Lib…and Jamal
