 No no, methinks you've been a mite bit misinformed. My brother is in fact on the planning commitee and, well, let's just say that Marlow is most definately the home of the forthcoming plastics factory. The magnificent old gravel pits by the way are to be retained by the council who see them as, and I quote, "an integral part of the future of tourism in the Marlow district". The main reason behind this decision is that an Orang Utan's broken lower mandible was recovered there in 1978. This component matched perfectly with a similar piece purported to belong to "Piltdown Man", uncovered in East Sussex in 1913. After the Piltdown remains were proved to be a hoax (most likely carried out by amateur fossil hunter and antiquarian Charles Dawson), the whole saga came to a close - until, that is, the discovery of the Marlow piece. This revived academic attention, and thus, the resulting media frenzy catapulted the gravel pits of Marlow into the national and indeed international spotlight - hence the modern-day tourism cash-in. I believe they even sell postcards of the gravel pits with a cartoon reconstruction of Piltdown Man superimposed onto them, which is a nice if somewhat kitsch touch. So there you go - winners all round really. The CRCMH stays, and Marlow gets plastic and gravel - which it truly deserves because it's a shithole. Can't complain really, eh?
