I lived at 263 then 257 Bernard St from 1951-1962. My memories are also of being happy, safe and secure. Our block was of red sandstone and we had an outside toilet on the landing shared by two other families and kept spotless. Each mother had their "turn" of cleaning with with the stairs and polishing the wall tiles. Our street's end looked to the gates of Sir William Arrol's - and on one side were large wooden doors that led into a carpet factory but were never used except of course for us to play "balls" on and sing our songs to. The street itself was as smooth as silk and the best end of Bernard St for playing games such as peever, roller skating, kick the can, bools (marbles), rounders, ropes, stilts (two national dried milk cans - one for each foot - pierced at the bottom twice and threaded with string. How carefree we were!
