Subject: Daphne & Ryan

Hi David. Wow--that's quite a generous offer. Well, thankyou! That sounds really perfect. I've never been to Hawaii, but it sure sounds like a great spot for our honeymoon--especially after the cold and snow of Iowa.

The Big Island --part I

Ryan, I was telling Daphne a little about the Big Island of Hawaii.....it's bigger than all the other islands in that chain combined....it has a bit of everything & I've always been fascinated by the many facets of its personality....you have everything from active lava flows from Kilauea caldera to snow topped mountains where there is actually skiing a few months, or sometimes only weeks, per year....there is a huge cattle ranch, Parker Ranch, started by a former sea captain who brought in 'paniolo cowboys' from Argentina to work the spread....also of course they have great horses....

The weather is absolutely the most varied of anyplace I have seen....you have tropical rain forests where perhaps 250 inches of rain falls per year....you have a wet side & a dry side of the island...
the windward or east side being wet & the leeward or west being dry.....however, within these general areas are many microcasms of greatly varying weather.....for instance the area immediately to the east of Waimea-Kamuela (north central part of the island) gets over 100 inches of rain, while the town itself & the area immediately to the west gets an average of 30 inches of rain....
