Subject: Hawaii -- part II

Sounds great to me. I'd definately prefer that to the hot humid and crowded places. Hawaii is one place I've never been, and sure look forward to going. I enjoyed your description. Sounds amazing. I'll send it off to Daphne.

Hi Ryan, [I just wrote something & then in trying to copy it I instead erased it....so would you pleeze reply to this so I can save it....thanx]
The place where you & Daphne will be staying is only a stones throw from the famous Kona Coffee Plantation, where they grow all the coffee....[wonder what that looks like...I've never seen coffee growing...hmm] it must indeed be a unique & unusual place...but then I think of the entire island of Hawaii, the Big Island, as being unique & unusual....the town of Holualoa overlooks the Kona coast at perhaps 1500 feet elevation...with a sweeping view of the Kona coast below...
when it's clear enough to see it...since you'll be in an area which gets considerable rain...maybe 150 inches annually...you won't always get a clear view of things...afternoon showers are the norm....
When people talk of Hawaii...the white sand beaches [& sometimes black sand beaches]...the warm ocean currents, the cooling trade winds, the swaying palm trees, the warm friendly people who call Hawaii home...very little attention is given my favorite aspect of the island...the 'highlands'...think ranches, horses, hiking, rain forests, lush tropical gardens, waterfalls & even skiing on Mauna Kea...such a variety of natures wonders & things-to-do in the great outdoors that it rather boggles the mind [at least mine]....
In 1984...when Daphne was six...we visited the Big Island....driving ten short miles from the Kona coast to Waimea-Kamuela town completely revolutionized & transformed my thinking about Hawaii....we had decided to take a different way to get back to Hilo airport...on the other side of the island...to catch our flight...
but as we ascended the rather steep & winding Highway 19 from the coast to the 'highlands'....
something rather magical began to transpire...a change in the atmosphere is what it was...as we passed into the shade of a forest of eucalyptus & other trees after just a few minutes driving...I noticed that it actually felt cool...the heavy humid air associated with the tropics had vanished....
we came to some nice homes & larger estates....& as we passed I remember thinking [& probably saying] 'now these people know what the true meaning of a paradise is'....the tropics without the humidity....welcome to the 'highlands'....

Ryan, you're more than welcome....as I told Daphne *'you ain't seen nuthin' yet'....I'm happy to be able to do this for you both....
*an old vaudevillian saying...I heard it 1st from famous entertainer Al Jolson, who was big in the '30s & '40s....
