Saw a different version of this trick, which doesn't care if you are right up against the person. Keep your elbows tight to your side straight down, arms folded like you are reaching for your shoulders. The person picks you up by putting their hands under your elbows and lifting.

When you don't want to be picked up you angle your arms slightly forward. All they would be able to do then is move your arms further forward.
